The world is saying goodbye to a very good boy.

Bobi, the 31-year-old Portuguese pooch recognized as the world's oldest dog ever, died on Friday.

Guinness World Records, which announced Bobi's death on its website, said it was "saddened" to learn of his passing.

A purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo livestock guard dog with a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, Bobi was named earlier this year as not only the oldest living dog but also the oldest hound in recorded history.

He lived to be a record-smashing 31 years and 165 days old.

According to his owner, Leonel Costa, Bobi was part of a litter of four puppies born in 1992 that Costa's parents decided not to keep because the family already had enough animals.

"Unfortunately, at that time it was considered normal by older people [...] to bury the animals in a hole so that they would not survive," he told Guinness.

By chance, when Costa's parents came for the puppies they failed to take the brown-and-white Bobi, who was hidden in a wood pile. Costa and his brothers kept Bobi a secret from their parents until the dog was too old to be put down.

Bobi's longevity was due to several factors, Costa said, including the "calm, peaceful" environment of their home in central Portugal's Conqueiros, where Bobi had free roam of the surrounding countryside and spent time in the backyard with his "feline friends."

Bobi also exclusively ate human food that had been soaked in water to wash away any seasoning.

In February, Guinness announced that Bobi was in fact the oldest living dog just two weeks after bestowing the honor on Spike, a 23-year-old Chihuahua mix from Ohio.

NPR asked Guinness who is now the oldest living dog after Bobi's death but didn't immediately hear back.

Bobi's advanced age also meant that he became the oldest dog in recorded history, taking the mantle from the previous record-holder, Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who died in 1939 after living 29 years and five months.

Rin Tin Tin the German Shepherd (1918-1932)

In the early days of Hollywood, one of the most famous animal actors was actually rescued from a battlefield! During the First World War, an American soldier named Lee Duncan, discovered an Imperial German Army kennel in France after a bombing. Inside were six German Shepherds: a mother and her five puppies who were not even a week old yet. Duncan brought the animals back to the United States, one of which would become the famous Rin Tin Tin.

Rin Tin Tin became a very popular movie star and appeared in 27 films and several commercials. His fame, however, long surpassed the dog’s natural lifetime. After his death in 1932, several of his own canine descendants picked up the mantle and took up his name as Rin Tin Tin II, Rin Tin Tin III, Rin Tin Tin IV, and so on. In fact, Rin Tin Tin XII, the most recent descendant, still participates in public events with his owner, Dorothy Yanchak! Rin Tin Tin’s legacy continued on in Hollywood as well, with The Return of Rin Tin Tin (1954-1959) and three different radio shows airing between 1930 and 1955.

Back in the early days of his career, Sylvester Stallone was so broke he ended up homeless and unable to buy food. At his lowest point, he realized he had no option but to sell his beloved dog and best friend, Butkus, whom he simply couldn't afford to feed.
After selling Butkus to a stranger for $25, he walked away crying.
Just two weeks later, Stallone saw a boxing match between Mohammed Ali and Chuck Wepner. It inspired him so much, he wrote the script for Rocky. As he started approaching movie studios, he had one request: he would star in the movie. With offers for as much as $350,000, Stallone still refused until they agreed for him to play the lead.
But the compromise came at a cost, with Stallone instead receiving just $35,000 for his script.
The first thing the actor did when he received the money was return to the liquor store where he had last seen Butkus. After standing there for three days, he saw the man who had purchased his dog approaching and begged to buy his dog back.
It would cost him $15,000, but it was worth every cent to Stallone. Butkus would appear in the film with his owner.
Rocky went on to be the highest grossing film of 1976 and won three Oscars. It also propelled Stallone to fame.
