The Brahma is a massive, stately bird, with an upright carriage and a large head. When standing, they should almost appear to form a V, and should stand fairly tall—males more than females. Feet should be strong, with feathers extending all the way down the middle toe, and plumage should be held more tightly than in the Cochin.

Weights average about 5.5 kg (12 lb) for c***s and 4.5 kg (9.9 lb) for hens.

The Brahma is a good winter layer of large brown eggs; eggs weigh approximately 55–60 g.

Sumatras are primarily an ornamental breed kept for their attractive plumage. Most often they are a lustrous black with a green sheen throughout the body and tail. The breed comes in blue and white varieties, as well as the unstandardised splash - a natural result of breeding blue chickens. Males usually weigh between 4 and 5 pounds, and females weigh between 31⁄2 and 4 pounds. Hens are poor layers with yearly totals of eggs amounting to about 100 white eggs a year, and are exceptionally susceptible to broodiness. Both males and females have small to nonexistent wattles, and males often have multiple spurs on each leg.[1] The breed is considered a primitive one; the Sumatra retains a strong flying ability, unlike most modern chicken breeds. The males will fight for dominance, though they usually do not fight to the death.

They originated in the Netherlands, not in Poland, as their name suggests. They can be quite tame, but most are flighty and skittish because their crest interferes with their vision, making them unable to see things, and causing them to get spooked. In addition, Silkie hens make wonderful brooders and mothers, and are even known to adopt baby ducks if given the chance!
