*Hypothermia*

Hypothermia is when body temperature drops dangerously below normal body temperatures. Hypothermia can be caused by being out in the cold, blood loss, certain illnesses, and occasionally during a sedation/anaesthetic.

Hypothermia is extremely dangerous and if it isn’t treated quickly, can cause the whole body to shut down, which can cause death.

First symptoms of Hypothermia include
*Shivering
*Drowsiness, Confusion and *Clumsiness
*Pale gums
*Loss of consciousness

First aid is necessary for the survival of our furry friend.
Take a dry towel and dry him/her off as soon as possible. Keep the pet in a warm environment. If the pet is conscious give him lukewarm (not hot) water to drink. Take him to the vet to be properly checked.

*Some precautions*

Provide them with a dry, comfy, and clean bed. When the temperature is low, which is usually in the early morning or in the evening, Keep them indoors.
Provide them with fresh clean water. Remember water kept for too long gets cold and affects pet's water intake which can lead to dehydration, decreased appetite, kidney disease and hard stools. Take special care of too young, too old, skinny and ill pets. They are at higher risk of Hypothermia.
