A handsome rooster or a handsome cockerel?

Cockerel is the term most used in the U.K. It means a young male chicken under a year old. Take off the ‘erel’ and you have the correct term for an adult male chicken.

Roosters are adult males that ‘roost’ with a group of hens.

Fortunately, language is interchangeable and people will use all three terms to mean the same: a male chicken. I am sure there will be some other old or local terms too. Does anyone know any? 🐓🐓🐓

Do you know where your chickens’ ears are? Have a guess, then swipe right to see if you’re correct.

Chickens have two ears, one each side, but they’re hidden behind tiny tufts of feathers.

Chickens’ hearing ranges from around 15-10,000 Hz, compared to humans which is around 20-20,000 Hz.

An amazing rooster fact is that they have the ability to muffle their ears when they crow. The action of opening their mouth to crow actually closes off their ear hence protecting it from their loud crowing. This action only applies to roosters - not hens. Poor girls - it puts my husband’s snoring into perspective! 🐓🐓🐓

One of our favorites:

Lakenvelders — sometimes referred to as “Shadow on a Sheet” — are small, white chickens draped in black on their neck, wings and tails averaging just 4-5 pounds mature weight. This is a beautiful breed with blue legs, large red single combs, deep red eyes and long, flowing tails. This very quick, active and alert breed will forage widely if allowed to run. Lakenvelders are very rare, and considered a threatened breed by the Livestock Conservancy.
