Hypothermia is when an animal's body temperature drops dangerously low. A pet's fur can only provide so much protection against cold and wet environments, and some pets will be more vulnerable due to illness or age.

So, what can you do to prevent hypothermia?

❄️ Ensure pets have access to shelter and a draught-free space with warm bedding (NEVER leave pets locked outside, especially in cold wet weather)

❄️ Dry your pet thoroughly after getting wet and ensure dogs that like a swim enter the water gradually to prevent shock

❄️ Provide a coat for dog walks for young pets, senior pets, arthritic pets, pets with thin fur and those with other health issues

❄️ Bring outdoor animals, such as rabbits, inside for the winter if possible

❄️ Don’t leave pets in a car, as the temperature can drop to outside levels very quickly.

Moisturize
Apply a petroleum jelly-based product like paw balm or cooking spray to your pet's paws before walks. You can also reapply balm after their paws are dry.
Trim hair

Trim the fur between your pet's toes and around their paw pads to prevent ice balls from building up.

Check paws
Regularly check your pet's paws for signs of damage like cracked pads or bleeding.

Trim nails
Keep your pet's nails short so their paw pads can make full contact with the ground.

Cover paws
If your pet has cracked paws, you can cover them with socks or bandages to help them walk more comfortably. You can also try waterproof dog boots, but it may take some time for your pet to get used to them.

Clean paws
Clean your pet's paws after walks.
Keep off slick surfaces
Keep your pet off slick surfaces like tile and ice inside and outside the house.
Use pet-safe ice melters
If you use ice melters, keep your pet indoors while you apply them and prevent them from licking the granules.
