Head of PM’s Strategic Reforms Salman Sufi shared an update on Twitter: “It’s almost time. On directions of PM Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s first curriculum on animal rights will be launched on International Animal Rights Day. Will be sharing event details for online participation few days before the event,” he added.
Apart from pets, Sufi continued, students will also be taught about stray animals. “They need to understand that they cannot throw stones at stray dogs… even Islam teaches us to respect every living being and emphasises how animals should be protected.”

⚠️Outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease in Sindh
Meat and milk from affected animal is safe for Consumption
This disease is limited to cattle only and can not be transferred to other animals or Humans.
lumpy skin disease, a viral infection of cattle, has a 5% mortality ratio.

It is transmitted by blood-feeding insects. It causes fever, nodules on the skin and can also lead to death, especially in animals that have not previously been exposed to the virus.

⚠️PEROTINITIS in cats.
Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. It is a serious and often fatal condition. Peritonitis may be short- or longterm, localized or widespread. Most commonly it occurs due to contamination of the peritoneal cavity (for example by perforation of the abdominal cavity by a foreign object, ruptured bladder or gallbladder, the splitting open of an abdominal wound closure, or rupture of the intestine due to the presence of a swallowed foreign object), but it also may be caused by infectious agents such as viruses or bacteria that travel from the bloodstream to the peritoneum. For example, feline infectious peritonitis is thought to be caused by a mutated coronavirus.

Signs of peritonitis vary depending on the cause. Fever, blood poisoning, shock, reduced blood pressure, hemorrhage, severe abdominal pain, loss of appetite, depression, vomiting, paralytic obstruction of the intestines with reduced f***l output, and fluid accumulation within the abdominal cavity may all be signs of peritonitis. Rupture of the gastrointestinal tract, with spillage of large volumes of intestinal contents, leads to sudden, severe peritonitis. Death due to shock from the large amounts of bacterial toxins may occur suddenly.

Core & Non core Vaccines:

⚠️ Vaccination Schedule may differ according to disease prevalence and Vet's personnel experience.
Core Vaccines: Vaccines are primarily required to be administered in all puppies and dogs with an unknown vaccination history. These vaccines provide immunity against those diseases which are much prevalent and cause serious threat to dog’s life.

These include:

Canine Parvovirus
Canine Distemper
Infectious Canine Hepatitis
Rabies

Non Core Vaccines: These are optional vaccines that should be less considered as these are less prevalent or have low risk of exposure to animal.

These include:

Bordetella bronchiseptica
Leptospirosis
Canine Parainfluenza

16/01/2022

Canine distemper is a contagious and serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of puppies and dogs.

How is canine distemper spread?

Puppies and dogs most often become infected through airborne exposure (through sneezing or coughing) to the virus from an infected dog or wild animal. The virus can also be transmitted by shared food and water bowls and equipment. Infected dogs can shed the virus for months, and mother dogs can pass the virus through the placenta to their puppies.

What are the symptoms of canine distemper?
Initially, infected dogs will develop watery to pus-like discharge from their eyes. They then develop fever, nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, reduced appetite, and vomiting. As the virus attacks the nervous system, infected dogs develop circling behavior, head tilt, muscle twitches, convulsions with jaw chewing movements and salivation (“chewing gum fits”), seizures, and partial or complete paralysis. The virus may also cause the footpads to thicken and harden, leading to its nickname “hard pad disease.”
In wildlife, infection with canine distemper closely resembles rabies.

Distemper is often fatal, and dogs that survive usually have permanent, irreparable nervous system damage.

How is canine distemper diagnosed and treated?
Veterinarians diagnose canine distemper through clinical appearance and laboratory testing. There is no cure for canine distemper infection. Treatment typically consists of supportive care and efforts to prevent secondary infections; control vomiting, diarrhea and neurologic symptoms; and combat dehydration through administration of fluids. Dogs infected with canine distemper must be separated from other dogs to minimize the risk of further infection.

How is canine distemper prevented?
Vaccination is crucial in preventing canine distemper.
Avoid contact with infected animals.

What is cat acne?
Cat acne forms when the hair follicles are blocked due to an excessive production of keratin, a protein found in the skin. In cats, acne mostly forms around the chin area, which is why it’s commonly referred to as cat chin acne.

What causes cat chin acne?
The causes of cat acne are still largely a mystery. It is believed that plastic can encourage the breakout as it’s been mostly noticed in cats that use plastic bowls for food and water. Poor grooming, especially in older cats, can also lead to acne. But there are a series of underlying conditions that can have a contribution as well:

Poor immune system.
Stress.
Food allergies.
Hormone imbalances.
Hyperactive sebaceous glands

What is the treatment for cat acne?
Cleaning the area
Chlorhexidine antibacterial washes can be used to clean the area where the acne is developing. Use the treatment a couple of times of day until the breakout starts to subdue. Aloe vera can also be applied after the area has been disinfected, to help soothe the skin.

Warm compresses
Warm compresses can help with mild acne and reduce the swelling.

Omega-3
Fatty acids like Omega-3 can help promote skin health and it is usually recommended for cats prone to acne breakouts.

Replacing plastic bowls
Consider using a stainless or ceramic bowl for your cat’s food and water.

Medicated shampoos
Mild feline acne cases can also be treated using antiseborrheic shampoo. Antibacterial or antifungal shampoos should be recommended by the vet. Although it’s tempting to reach for the human version of anti-acne products, don’t do so unless directed by the vet.

Ointments
Applying an antimicrobial gel a few times a day can also help clear out acne.

Systemic and topical antibiotics if needed.

Steroid injections
In severe cases, steroids can be prescribed by the vet to help fight inflammation.

Why Is My Cat Panting?

If you notice your cat panting, think about what activity or situation they were experiencing right before this. Have you ever seen your cat pant before? Has your cat been acting normal until now?

Due to the possibility of panting being a sign of a more serious condition, it is best practice to call your veterinarian with this information to get advice on the best next steps.

Overheating as a cause for Panting
Like dogs, some cats will pant when they are overheated and trying to cool themselves down. Your cat can perspire through its paws but release only a small amount of heat this way.

How Do You Cool Down A Cat That’s Panting?
The first step to cooling down a cat is removing them from the hot environment. You can move your cat into an air-conditioned space or a room with a fan and a lot of shade. Cat’s will often stretch their body out on a cold surface to cool down.

If a cat is overheating, it will seek out water to drink to cool itself. You can try putting a couple of ice cubes in their water bowl to provide cool drinking water. If your cat tolerates it, you can wipe them with a wet cloth. Our furry friends will groom themselves to cool down. Using this wet cloth is speeding up this process. If your cat seems over-stressed by any of your cooling methods, stop what you are doing. Stress can lead to increased or prolonged panting.

Panting due to Stress/Anxiety
When a cat feels stress, anxiety, or fear, they will express these feelings through body language. Shallow, open-mouth breathing or panting can be a part of this high emotion body language.

Other causes:
ÂŹStrenuous exercise.
ÂŹPain-induced panting in cats
Like stress or anxiety, cats will communicate pain through body language and odd behavior. Some indications that your pet is painful are changes in mood, vocalizing, obsessive licking, hiding, or open-mouth breathing.

What is feline panleukopenia ?
Feline panleukopenia (FP) is a highly contagious viral disease of cats caused by the feline parvovirus. Kittens are most severely affected by the virus. The disease is also called feline distemper or feline parvo.

How do cats become infected?

Cats can shed the virus in their urine, stool, and nasal secretions; infection occurs when susceptible cats come in contact with these secretions, or even the fleas from infected cats. An infected cat tends to shed the virus for a relatively short period of time (1-2 days), but the virus can survive for up to a year in the environment, so cats may become infected without ever coming into direct contact with an infected cat. Bedding, cages, food dishes, and the hands or clothing of people who handle the infected cat may harbor the virus and transmit it to other cats. It is, therefore, very important to isolate infected cats. Any materials used on or for infected cats should not be used or allowed to come in contact with other cats, and people handling infected cats should practice proper hygiene to prevent spreading the infection.

Disinfection:
Although household bleach is an effective disinfectant against the FPV virus, replacing all items associated with an infected cat is the best way to ensure any traces of the virus have been removed. Ideally, unvaccinated cats should not be allowed into an area where an infected cat has been — even if the area has been disinfected.

Symptoms Include :
Vomiting
Diarrhea/bloody diarrhea
Dehydration
Weight loss
High fever
Anemia (due to lowered red blood cells)
Rough hair coat
Depression
Complete loss of interest in food
Hiding
Neurological symptoms (e.g., lack of coordination).

How is FP treated?
The likelihood of recovery from FP for infected kittens less than eight weeks old is poor. intensive care and treatment are critical to support the cat’s health with medications and fluids until its own body and immune system can fight off the virus.

Lactose Intolerance🍼🥛🍶
Dairy can be the silent danger in many pet homes. But why are so many cats and dogs lactose intolerant and what can happen if you feed it to your pet?

What is Lactose?

Lactose is a sugar found in milk and products containing milk. So for those suffering from lactose intolerance dairy is normally off the menu, unless it is lactose free (where the sugar has been removed from the product). You’ll notice that most pet milk on the market is lactose free.

When lactose enters the digestive system of a pet that is lactose intolerant, the body is unable to process this sugar or break it down. When cats are kittens, and dogs are pups, they have an enzyme in their digestive systems known as lactase. This is what allows them to tolerate the lactose present in their mother’s milk. As your kitten or pup grows this enzyme depletes, which can lead to intolerances to lactose. Basically, as the lactose cannot break down it passes straight through the digestive tract, picking up bacteria along the way. This is what can cause all the tummy upsets in your feline friend or canine companion.

The more lactose a product has, the more likely it is to cause a reaction. This can lead to symptom such as:

Pain
Bloating
Diarrhea – usually within 8-12 hours after ingesting
Drinking large amounts of water
Vomiting
Smelly gas
Gastrointestinal upset

What About Cats Who LOVE Their Milk?
While the majority of cats are lactose intolerant, there are those who love their milk. They may rub against your leg when you pull the milk carton out of the fridge or demand your cereal milk. Not every cat gets sick from milk, and if yours is one of the milk loving kitties, then check with us. It may be possible for you to give an occasional treat. If you suspect your dog or cat cannot handle lactose remove dairy completely from their diet.

All About Ear Mites👂🐈
Mites are arthropods, not insects, and are close cousins with spiders and ticks.
How Do Cats Get Ear Mites?
Cats typically pick up ear mites from contact with other animals, including other cats, dogs, rabbits and rodents. Mother cats may pass them on to their kittens. Mites can survive for a short time off of the animals, so they may be spread through bedding, carpets and other soft surfaces. Some species of mites may also spread outside the ears, causing patches of skin irritation.

How Do I Know if My Cat Has Ear Mites?
Mites are tiny, barely visible to the naked eye. They chow down on the wax and oils in kitty's ears.
Though the mites themselves are hard to see, what you can see is, well… mite p**p. They leave behind dark debris that looks something like sticky coffee grounds.
If it gets bad enough, the mite infestation may completely clog the ear canal with debris, and/or lead to ear inflammation or infection.
With some cats, you may notice excessive exterior ear grooming, leading to hair loss on the back of the ears.
Smelly ears
Head shaking
Dark, waxy ear goobers
Pink and swollen interior of ear
Scratches or scabs near the ear

Can Humans Get Ear Mites from Their Cats?
Thankfully, ear mite infestations in humans are very rare. It's still a good idea to keep your ears clean, and don't encourage kitty to lick you due to risk of cat scratch fever transmission.

Hairball in cat stomach! 🐈
What is a cat hairball?
A cat hairball is a collection of dead hair and digestive juices that have formed in your cat’s stomach. Cats develop hairballs by grooming themselves and swallowing the hairs, which build into hairballs in their stomachs. All cats groom themselves by licking at their fur. Their tongues have little barbs to snag the hairs as they shed. Barbs face backwards on the tongue, a design engineered by nature to help snag loose hairs, but it also means cats have little choice but to swallow the hair they groom.

Cat hairball symptoms
When a cat is trying to bring up a hairball, they may start retching, gagging or acting like they are dry heaving and trying to vomit. Sometimes the sound they make is called a ‘cough-gag-retch’. This is because your cat can appear to be coughing from the lungs, gagging with their throat and retching from the stomach.

Are cat hairballs normal?
Many cat owners find it very difficult and distressing to hear their cats gagging and retching, and they start to wonder if there is anything they should be worrying about. This self-grooming is completely normal and cats should be doing it to keep their fur in good condition.

Most individual hairs will pass through the cat’s digestive system as normal, but sometimes they can form clumps which begin to accumulate in the stomach. Cats try and vomit them up to prevent them going into the intestine and causing a blockage. Don’t be worried if you see your cat stretch their neck, dry retch (their mouth opening wide) and expel a hairball before calmly walking away. It can be distressing to watch this, but don’t worry – it’s normal.

When can cat hairballs become dangerous?
You should take your cat to the vets if they have any of these cat hairball symptoms:

Prolonged gagging, vomiting, retching without producing a hairball
A drop in appetite
Lethargy
Cat constipation or diarrhoea
Excessive nibbling on grass
A swollen or sensitive stomach.

Rabies in Cats and dogs🐕🙀
If symptoms of rabies appear, No effective treatment ⚠️
Though people may mostly associate rabies with dogs, it’s a virus that can affect any mammal — including cats. In fact, rabies affects more cats than dogs in the United States. The virus can be passed on to other animals or humans and is fatal if not treated before symptoms appear.

Can Cats Pass Rabies to Humans?
A cat with rabies can pass the virus to their owner. In order to become infected with rabies, you need to have direct contact with the saliva of an affected animal. This doesn’t mean you can get rabies if a cat licks or drools on you. The saliva needs to come in contact with a mucus membrane or broken skin.
Animals most commonly transmit rabies to humans through bites. It is possible for a human to get rabies from an animal scratch, but it’s very rare.

The symptoms of rabies include:

Changes in behavior. Cats who are usually calm may become excitable or agitated. Extroverted cats may become less affectionate and may isolate themselves.
Aggression. Cats can become excitable, aggressive, and vicious towards humans or other animals.
Drooling. Rabies can affect muscles in a cat’s mouth so they can’t swallow. They may drool or foam at the mouth.
Loss of muscle control. The final stages of rabies cause paralysis and coma
