Just returned the 8 tiny pups to momma after their bath. Poor girl could use a bath herself and trying to get some food. Thankfully she is still nursing the little rascals... can't imagine all that time bottle feeding...
UPDATE "Libby" the Lab - sorry to be so long to post re her progress (working on 4 other cases at the moment involving multiple pups). She is such a sweet girl... follows me everywhere and never takes her eyes off me. First I would like to thank everyone who donated to her Vet care. Without you it would not be possible for us to continue saving lives.
Last Thursday it looked like recovery had taken a downward turn as right side of her face really began to swell. We decided to continue antibiotics an extra couple of days and add an anti-inflammatory. If no improvement it would have been back to the Vet again. However, very happy as swelling began going down almost overnight. Removed stitiches from her ear and hole in her neck will require cleansing routine for at least another week.
UPDATE (Wed.) "Jauca pack" - was a visit today full of up 'n down. Entering via the eastern most access road i saw "newbie" on the street. He looked like he was trying to enter gates to a couple of properties but did not belong.
Arriving at the beach ...no pack to be seen. I walked the beach quite a distance in both directions ...nothing. Was just about leave and decided to give the horn one last honk. Was looking in the mirrors about to reverse and suddenly there were a couple of the pups and before i could get back out rest of the gang appeared (except no "Aloof Momma"). The somewhat concerning news was they had 2 adult males with them that i had never seen before. Perhaps the black one is Pappa of the 2 little black pups. Anyway they stayed well away which was good as i did not want them stealing food from the pups. Everyone ate about same as usual except "the Matriarch" ...she did not appear to be "in heat" yet but why are these 2 males suddenly hanging around? "My friend" has not been that interested in eating the past couple of days so could she be going "in heat"? Just as most of the pack seemed finished eating something attracted them around the corner which i suspect must have been an animal and they all went running off in chase (including the 2 new males). "The Matriarch", a tan pup, and the little black one that lets me pick-up did not return. I decided it was time to begin bringing them off the beach. I picked up the little brindle that has let me last couple of days but she squealed and turned her head to bite so i just let her go to not panick the other pups... tomorrow the towel and i will try for at least one of the brindles and the little black one. I would really like to also take " The Matriarch" but still hesitant because she keeps the pack together. As the pack moved around the corner they were out of sight so i was able to pick up "My friend" and put her in the vehicle without them seeing. For the moment she is being introduced to the gang he
UPDATE: "Jauca pack"...
Was worried when first arrived (Wed. morning) as again were only 3 young dogs... no mommas or pups. Thankfully after a walk down the beach with one of my dogs ...there they were... "my friend", and momma, 2 other adults, and 8 little pups. I had hoped pups were not there yesterday because they got a lot to eat at beach parties the day before... but does not look like it as they are noticeably thinner. This morning I kept putting food til they stopped eating. Will try to do same all week in hopes will be enough to keep up with their growth.
One of the best gifts any rescuer can receive... this is Tippy (now Josie) enjoying first snowfall with her new big brother at her new home in west NY State. I rescued her from roadside in PR with her whole family (7 pups + momma & poppa). The pups still had their eyes closed ...Hybrid Shepherds (German/Belgian mix)...
Was thinking of leaving momma and pup here as was great shelter from the pending rain but storm surge was pushing waves up to within a foot of their little refuge and a bit of salt water splashing over. You can hear the surf very close.
While I was deciding the little baby slid out on wet surface so I grabbed and took to SUV knowing momma would follow. They are now safe in foster porch here at Caribe Rescue.
Morning beach patrol ... waiting on TS Karen.
Really need to get the 4x4 operational again as there are some beaches and mountain tracks just cannot access with a 2wd vehicle.
