We didn't just learn history, we watched it unfold as we watched the aftermath of the catastrophe that was the attack on 9/11. I remember to this day watching the heroism of the firefighters, police officers, and first responders who ran not from Ground Zero, but toward it, to help their fellow Americans in need. We honor those brave Americans today – and those who lost their lives as well as their families.

In the weeks that followed, we weren't black or white; gay or straight; Democrat or Republican. We were all American. In the face of tragedy, we found unity. In the face of despair, we found renewed hope. Even as we pray that no calamity like it ever happens again, we can still long to be reunited once again as one nation under God.

Now 22 years later, we have a growing generation of young adults who weren't yet born on that infamous day. We have an opportunity to ask how we commemorate our national identity on this day. We should celebrate our ability to gradually heal even our deepest wounds. We will forever continue to pursue our more perfect Union.

We will honor the heroes and the fallen at the 9/11 Memorial or wherever we are able.

Vertical farms aren’t the only part of the CEA industry benefiting from NASA growing successes. Potato farmers are now using nutrient film techniques to grow seed potatoes in greenhouses. The agency pioneered this hydroponic method to grow root zone crops like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and peanuts.

Astronauts won’t have the luxury of soil, so NASA developed recipes for hydroponically growing some of these staple crops. This wildly successful technique proved itself with a record-breaking potato yield.

The world record for potato yield is approximately 89,000 pounds per acre. A NASA-funded test in a controlled environment facility at the Wisconsin Biotron Laboratory produced an equivalent of 175,000 pounds per acre, nearly twice the best field-grown yields.

Russian missiles hit agricultural storage facilities near Odesa, Ukraine, Thursday night. It was the fourth consecutive night of attacks on the Odesa region. The Russian Defense Ministry described its strikes on Odesa as “retaliatory,” referring to an attack by Ukrainian drone boats on a bridge connecting Russia to Crimea.

Why is Russia really targeting Odesa? On Monday, Moscow quit a grain export deal that guaranteed the safety of ships entering Ukrainian ports. For the last year, the deal allowed the export of over 32 million tons of Ukrainian grain to countries facing food shortages such as Afghanistan and Sudan. On Wednesday, Moscow said it would consider cargo ships traveling through the Black Sea as potential military targets.

A wicking bed is an easy and effective solution if you’re gardening in a climate with low rainfall. It allows water to accumulate and be taken up by plant roots naturally, making it possible to grow water loving plants even in arid climates.

What is a wicking bed? A wicking bed is a raised garden bed built over a water reservoir of the same size, allowing the plants in the bed to absorb water at a natural rate, even if the surrounding soil is dry. This is useful in arid climates, areas under water-hogging trees, and gardens that are destined to wait long periods of time between irrigations. The basic structure of a wicking bed includes a plastic lined reservoir of gravel with a hole-filled pipe running through it, on top of which is built a normal raised garden bed of the same size.
