September is animal pain awareness month – but would you know if your cat was affected by acute pain? Let’s look into this a little deeper….

🐈‍⬛Cats are REALLY good at hiding pain, whether that’s acute pain due to trauma, surgery or sudden illness, or chronic pain due to ongoing health issues such as osteoarthritis or dental disease, cats will try to mask pain as a survival strategy – they are literally programmed to do this!

🐈‍⬛This makes cats notoriously challenging to assess for pain, meaning many suffer in silence. Behaviour problems can also occur due to pain, which can affect a cat’s quality of life, the bond between a cat and their owner and the effectiveness of veterinary care.

🩺However, all is not lost as there are tools that both veterinary professionals AND cat owners can use to assess cats for pain. In this post we will be looking at a validated pain measurement tool for acute pain known as the ‘Feline Grimace Scale’

The feline grimace scale is designed to measure acute pain in cats according to any subtle changes in their facial expressions. Pain can be measured and recorded according to changes in a cat’s:

😺Ear position

😺Orbital tightening

😾Muzzle tension

😺Whisker position

😺Head position

🐈‍⬛This pain scoring technique does not involve touching the cat in any way, which is ideal for cats who are anxious or painful and may be reactive. The feline grimace scale is straightforward for cat owners to use, who may need to check their cat for signs of pain after surgery or during times of illness.

Bink is a 17 year old cat who has a kidney disease. The owner followed my advise and got him a higher bowl to eat from and wetfood.

I also advised her a test set of kidney food products from Medpet and now they have found a wetfood he likes very much.

PS wetfood is very good for cats, because it has a lot of water and not much calories.
Specially for kidney and blatterproblems it s important to get more wetfood and not just kibbles.
