After an amazing 5,5 years with us, Mr. KP will retire. I could say, it was a hard decision, but I would be lying. If you listen to your horse, sometimes you hear things you don't like. KP was talking loud and clear that he doesn't enjoy being ridden anymore. Having earned as a race horse and suffering from typical arthritis since the age of 6, he broke his shoulder, traveled the world, settled in Portugal and made lots of dreams come true, he has given so much of himself, that he deserves a retirement with dignity when he asks for it, and his love Quehaja.
Both horses had difficulties bonding with other horses, but they found a deep connection with each other. They will inhabit their own, private paddock, as they do not get along with others.
Jonas Norte rode him for the very last time and I rode Quehaja to their retirement home.
Hopefully he will have some happy years ahead of him!
Happy 5th Birthday Second Chance
This was his first Beach Ride and he did a very spectacular stunt when the first white water hit him. Unfortunately I didn't catch it on camera but fortunately he had no rider on top....
Crazy.
Later on we have been chased by a yellow, a brown and a black Labrador which didn't listen at all and almost ended up under our hooves. Well all ended well and the weather was amazing.
When people say, their horses don't want to go to the water...
Falésia, Isabel and El Nino looooooove the water, the waves, the sand. It's a big party and we get all soaked but with big smiles.

Both, KP and Falésia lost their socks (longer story) and I went back to pick them up. Our guests didn't understand at first, that we gonna galopp a second time and so they made me wait a while. Here is Isabel getting her galopp denied right after the turn. She was so good and didn't run off.

More and more often I hear about desensitising and I am not a fan at all. More often than not desensitising is teaching helplessness. A horse is being overpowered again and again with mostly plastic sheets and has no option to get away from it. Instead of feeling comfortable, what the intention is, the horse yields into a sutiation it doesn't see an escape from.
There are more horse friendly ways for a horse to flourish in different situations, than pulling a plastic sheet over their heads and bodies.

I was a little excited as I have never done that before: a tandem!
This horse has some sudden explosive behaviour under the saddle and we will see how we can help him. He has been here for just over a week and is already more steady with movement, noise, touch from behind.
I am really looking forward to see him developing.

I know that we have been relatively quiet this season and there are various reasons which could or not be mentioned on our page. One reason is definitely a lot of mental effort that went into our trainees.
With all challenges we had to master and still fight to cope with, this years trainees took a big toll on me.
This video from today shows "Lady Waterproof" and her owner riding together for the very first time. I cannot even put into words how I feel.
I think I don't say to much if I say, this was the biggest challenge of my carrier.
(I know - Wave - but Wave is ours and there was no pressure. It took over 4 years, which she needed to be healthy enough)
Finally I see the light.
In the video a tree fell down behind us and her reaction was NONE.
She came so far, from a hyper-protected mare with a large lack of stimulation (no loud noises or fast movements and so on), which spooked at a dark spot of tar in the street to a mare that canters fearless through a windy field of colorful bushes.
Never would I have guessed that we will make it so far.
It will be a relief to give her back into her loving home and see her thrive. The honest truth.
She is for sale and will make some advanced, steady and confident rider a very happy person.

Horses have 4 legs with one hoof attached to each!
Funny, everybody knows it but so many forget it. Sometimes the farrier/trimmer is being called for a "lame" horse that simply has a stone in the hoof, which would be easily picked out.
A little self-education is so easily done nowadays.
Repeatly I solved the mystery of lame horses myself and seeing Lady Waterproof just evoked the strong feeling of an abscess in her hoof.
It is not, but it hit very close to home.
With the digital support of Tim Döpper Huforthopädie I think I could open the pressure and level her healing process until her trimmer will attend to her.

This little horse, without any edges, is looking for a new home or someone to share him close to our area.
Just under 15hh, this gelding is a star in the country side. I have been riding him less than 20 times when this video was taken. He is very reasonable, beautifully sensitive and responsive. Of course he has to learn a lot, yet, but he is very eager. One of the few horses that sees me arriving with the halter and rope and already goes to the gate to start his day.
Super gentle, easy with the hooves (bare foot), agreeable with a shower. His owner would let him go to a very good and gentle home.
We normally do not rehome horses but those two boys are a little special. Once the darker grey can be ridden, he is also for adoption.

The Unicorn Ride
One of my favorite rides is the "Praia Canal" - Not a beach ride because of the big rocks on the shore, it has a wonderful mix of hills, country side, sea views, galopping trails. Such a variety and an eye-opener how much nature surrounds us here in the Nature Park.

I think Gentleman loved it today. He is very head-shy and the mare I was riding has some spontaneous outbursts 🙄😬 which made him very insecure. Solution: choose your own speed, distance and position.
