Pedal osteitis (PO) is defined as an inflammatory condition of the foot that results in demineralization of the distal phalanx. Radiographically the condition appears as a focal or diffuse radiolucency of the bone or as new bone formation. The 2 recognized classifications of pedal osteitis are nonseptic and septic.

On this case, we have a horse with a septic PO.
After surgery, orthopedic shoeing and infection control he will have a good prognosis for recovery.

BAREFOOT

It is a current topic, which raises some doubts and questions that should be explored and studied.
Is Barefoot the ideal hoof care method? Is traditional Shoeing the ideal hoof care method? Or should we search for alternatives?

After some victories and medals, both in the last Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and in the World Championship Herning 2022, the topic once again was widely discussed. But what about the dozens of Olympic Medalists and World Champions with horses that are shod in the traditional way?

Horses came into the world without shoes, some live their entire lifes without ever being shod, others are shod since started under saddle.

So why did this practice of shoeing horses begin hundreds of years ago? Well… because the use given to some horses wasn’t compatible with the fact that they were Barefoot. Whether in war, agriculture, and more recently in the practice of leisure or sports, the use of horseshoes and other similar materials is not a fashion but a need to support the horse.

But… must all horses be shod and is shoeing fundamental for all horses? Not at all!

Nowadays not all horses need shoes, but not all horses can perform their role or activity being barefoot.

The important thing, and the questions that we must answer in the decision of our horse to be Barefoot or Shod, go far beyond just looking at the hooves and the horse itself.
What is the use of the horse?
Will my equestrian frame be suitable for Barefoot horses? (Floor, boxes, tracks, accesses, showers, paddocks etc…)
Will I be available to take care of my horse's hooves daily?
Will I be able to trim my horse weekly or as needed?
Is my horse's diet correct and balanced?
Etc…

Whatever you decide for, it will be difficult to find the best of both worlds. On one hand - Barefoot - the ideal and natural function of the hoof mechanism and on the other hand - shoeing - protection, anti-slip protection, etc.
The future will bring us new materials that allow combining the benefits of each technique.

Talk to your farrier, veterinarian or podiatrist about this. New ideas are always welcome!
