Several people were sad to miss the jul kul at zoo.se this weekend so I decided to have a set of mini Christmas obstacle games at my workplace with treats for each dog that takes part and of course a little fika for dog mom or dad too!

Remember your wee dog comes from wolf ancestry… isn’t this lovely!

The she-wolf has this habit of wrapping herself around the neck of her wolf because the neck is the most vulnerable part of the animal.
By doing so, she shows him her unconditional love.
For ethologists: Wolves are the most loyal and loving animals: they have only one partner throughout their life. The wolf is known to have an almost extraordinary tenderness and affection towards his she-wolf...which she knows perfectly well to return.

Fantastic lecture by Jessica from Distriktsveterinärerna Örnsköldsvik at our golden retriever club meeting yesterday. I really hope we get more chances to hear from this knowledgeable and interesting veterinarian!
It is the 50 year anniversary of the golden retriever club in Sweden this year so there will be lots of lovely Golden events coming in the next few months!

Animal longevity- my animals mostly seem to do relatively well.
I just saw an advert looking at older animals and offering all sorts of advice as the specialist has completed her training as a physio and nutritionalist for dogs.
I am happy to share tips but here are some of my grounds for being able to;

Nigel (farm cat 29 - run over while chasing a rabbit - died before his time!)

Paddy the springer spaniel 19 - heart problems due to early life of cruelty before I got him - walked 3km every day till his last when he couldn’t get up so we decided it was time to part

Ben - labrador 21 - heart went into fibrillation on the last day of his life - liked to wander and swim around the farm

Anuskah - Newfoundland 15 years of age, living her last 7 years with us - heart attack

Kitty (farm cat 18 killed by a careless driver)

Babs (pony 13hh lived to 53 and died due to a stomach problem - so probably due to insufficient grinding surface left on her teeth (she still had all but one with good dental care) worked as a psychotherapy assistant until 2 days before she decided to leave us

Luke gelding horse 15,3hh died at 48, working on soft going up until the day before and choosing how he spent his days

In my opinion, this stuff is as much art as science; as much love as learning and a good bit of luck.

None of the above were similar in genetics or build.
All ate a mixed diet including things they should probably not have eaten (a cat that liked vegan curry and a dog that ate entire socks as well as a horse whose old owner told me he liked ham (🙈🙀🙀🙀) sandwiches- no he didn’t get those with me.

They had different levels of exercise but a human mum who is a trained veterinary rehabilitation therapist as well as a relative nut for animals.

A friend who likes math once did a calculation of the amount of life expectancy vs how old most of my four footed family were when they left us. He reckoned most exceeded life expectancy by over 30%.

I would suggest that is because life expectancy is based for some species on working animals whose job wore them out and for others on those who lead a sofa based lifestyle.

Activating the mind of our older furry family is as much a part of stimulating the body as feeding right and exercising.

Do you want your dog to live a long, healthy and happy life even into retirement?
Please don’t leave taking care of his or her old age until they are already old!
I see so many arthritic problems that are due to long term misuse and bad use of the body that could be helped when they are younger!
Poor joint conformations can be mitigated considerably through planned exercise and careful nutrition.
Let’s keep our companions healthy by learning ourselves and teaching them healthy habits from the beginning!

Water Treadmill is one of the hydro therapies and water fitness activities we offer here in Örnsköldsvik. Using water pressure and support we can gently fitten the body. In the pool we can have a lot of fun with our dogs too in a safe and warm environment.

Why not look into hydrotherapy or doggy swimming in your area - just make sure your instructor is qualified.
(My qualification comes from the fabulous Svenska Fysioterapiskolan which I cannot recommend highly enough for anyone wanting to train in Sweden)

I don’t understand this.
I would happily have a house and farm full of elderly animals
They are wise and so full of love - they have had the practice their whole lives of how to live with and care for us humans

My dogs like dried Apple. Blueberry, raspberry and mango mixed in

Torkade kycklinghjärtan! 😍
Gör såhär:
Skär hjärtana i små bitar.
Koka på hög värme i 10-15 min.
Sprid ut bitarna på en plåt med bakplåtspapper.
Torka i ugnen på 150 grader i ca 30-40 min.
Låt bitarna torka klart på plåten i rumstemperatur.
Klart! 👏🏻

Obs! Tänk på att helst välja svenskt kött till era hundar men framförallt inte danskt. Danskt kött innehåller mycket antibiotika vilket varken är bra för oss eller våra fyrbenta vänner! 🌸
