28kg 14-year-old rescue dog got into a car accident in November 2023. 💥🚗

He broke his right back leg (thigh bone).

Surgery was done at .

Implant: 3.5mm locking plate from from USA. 🇺🇲

- Careful general anaesthesia was executed due to the patient's senior age.

- Post-operation x-rays seems to show good bone alignment, apposition and compression. 🦴

- The natural curvature of the femoral bone was also preserved.

These allow load-sharing of the patient's weight between the bone plate and the bone.

It has been 4 months since the surgery and good limb function is observed by his rescuers. 👍

Our dear Lola is 2 years old! 🐹

Lola is a beloved hamster that comes to Atlas Vet.

We are happy and blessed that she is enjoying her life at home as a happy hammie. 😍

She recently celebrated her 2-year-old birthday.

New Vet Addition Announcement 📢

In 2020, Dr Ning moved to Washington DC in USA to support her spouse in his role as a diplomat at the Singapore Embassy.

She now returns to Singapore and brings her expertise to Atlas Vet.

🐱 Dr Ning graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2008.

🐼 She worked as a veterinarian in both Australia and Singapore for almost 12 years.

🐰 She has a keen interest in diagnostic imaging (x-rays, ultrasound) and internal medicine.

🐶 She is also passionate about animal welfare and has been an active volunteer with SOSD since 2015.

Her internal medicine and ultrasound skill set complements our already-competent surgical capabilities. 🔥

With Dr Ning on board, we look forward to providing more comprehensive care for our patients.

We are very excited to have a vet of her caliber join the team.

Suki was found limping without an owner.

She was a rescue cat and diagnosed with a broken right front leg. 🤕🦴

Surgery was done with 2.4mm locking implant system from UK 🇬🇧.

Bone union was observed at day 60.

And Suki has now been adopted and is living a brand new life. 🌻

You can now run and play all you want, Suki! 🎉💪

AVOIDING hairline cracks ❌

It is important to fully evaluate the extent of fractures.

🦴 Sometimes hairline cracks can be hard to detect on x-rays.

🦴 And such cracks in the bone can complicate fracture surgery.

🦴 Bone screws can become LOOSE if they enter the fracture site.

In this particular femur fracture (thigh bone), it was a 'high impact' fracture with multiple cracks and pieces.

A 'plate-rod' technique was used.

This involves carefully drilling a metal rod INTO the centre of the bone.

This extra metal rod strengthens the bone core, provides extra support and helps with bone alignment. 💪🔥

Rescue cat broke his front leg due to a trauma accident.

2.0mm screws with locking compression plate from UK 🇬🇧

Bone healing and union observed 2 months after surgery! 🦴

The cat has gone on to make a full recovery. 🐱🐾

For small animals, the screws are as small as 2mm thin.

They are sometimes thinner than chopsticks! 🥢

The screws need to be tiny to prevent further damage and injury to the bone.

Side note: Are these kinds of "behind-the-scenes" photos too gory? We actually find this stuff interesting, so not sure about you. 😅

THE CAT CANNOT BREATHE.

We recently rescued a stray cat, Narnia, with a Diaphragmatic Hernia.

💨 The diaphragm is a thin muscle that separates the organs in the chest (heart, lungs) from the organs in the abdomen.

💨 Diaphragmatic hernias result from abdominal organs (e.g. liver, stomach, intestines) being pushed through a hole into the chest area.

💨 When the abdominal organs have moved through the hole in the diaphragm, they can become trapped and lose their blood supply.

💨 Misplaced organs in the chest crowd the lungs and the animal is unable to breath properly.

💨 Symptoms can include coughing, poor appetite, laying around more, trouble breathing or taking rapid and short breaths, fever, and collapse.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐦𝐛 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞.

TREATMENT

Treatment requires surgery to fix the hole in the diaphragm and move the abdominal organs back into the belly.

If the organs are severely damaged from being trapped in the chest, surgery to fix the damage or remove the entire organ may also be necessary.

Unfortunately, the diaphragmatic hernia repair surgery carries some RISK because the patient can go into respiratory arrest.

We are very blessed to cross paths with many cute pets and their appreciative pet owners.

Our team commonly stay back long hours beyond closing time.

🌱 To look after sick pets.

🌱 We celebrate when the pets recover.

🌱 We grief when when our patients die.

We dedicate our entire lives to this profession because this is our calling.

And we are very fortunate to have pet owners that recognise and acknowledge our efforts.

Poor cat's thigh bone was smashed into pieces. 😵‍💫😵

(Right distal femoral comminuted fracture)

Implant: 2.4mm Locking Cuttable T-plate from

X-rays 2 months after the surgery showed bone healing & union!

📝📝📝

Personal notes:

✏️ The fracture was more than a week old.

✏️ Plate was applied in bridging fashion to not disrupt the fracture haematoma.

✏️ There were multiple fissure lines that made this a challenging repair.

✏️ The T-plate allowed us to squeeze 3 locking screws in the distal fragment.

✏️ Because the fracture was so near the knee, we had to be very careful to make sure the screws don't go into the knee joint space.

✏️ If the screws poke into the knee joint, it can lead to pain during movement. 🤕

✏️ The repair definitely has room for improvement. 💪

✏️ But still generally pleased with the patient outcome. 😊

Sometimes Mother Nature can be brutal.

Unfortunately, bad things happen to good dogs all the time.

As the Chinese saying goes, "生，老，病，死。"

We live, we grow old, we fall sick. And we die.

All we can do as veterinarians is do our best for our animal patients.

And mutter under our breath:

"Not today."

INSPIRED BY REAL EVENTS.

Have you noticed it is getting harder and harder to get appointments at the vet clinic?

There is a worldwide veterinary shortage. Singapore is affected as well.

At the same time, pet ownership is getting more and more popular. 📈

The demand for veterinary services is increasing but the availability is dropping. 📉

Even the vet emergency hospitals are overwhelmed sometimes.

(In case you haven't notice, the huge mismatch between demand and supply is contributing to increasing veterinary bill prices.

It is Economics 101. But that is a story for another day.)

Earlier this year, the Singapore Veterinary Association (SVA) published a statement: "Staff Shortage and Longer Waiting Times in Veterinary Clinics/Hospitals"

It is heartbreaking when you are simply trying your best and yet people blame you for having 'no compassion'.

If earning $$$ is all we care about, why would we turn your 'business' away?

That is not a 'smart business move' at all.

So your pet can get treatment promptly.

Instead of wasting precious time queuing and waiting.

May we remember to be kind to the veterinary staff who is the backbone of the local pet health industry.

A little kindness goes a long way towards making them feel valued and safe at work during these challenging times.

✨ Vet Rotation Notice ✨

- Dr Chan will start her maternity leave from 1st August 2023 onwards

- Dr Chow will start his paternity leave from 10th August 2023 onwards

From August to October (3 months), Dr Dominic Siu will be helping out at Atlas Veterinary Clinic & Surgery.

He flew in from Australia to help out during these 3 months. 🇦🇺

More about Dr Dominic:

Dr Dominic grew up in Hong Kong. He was Dr Chan and Dr Chow's classmate in vet school in Melbourne, Australia.

He brings along his expertise in doing comprehensive ultrasound scans for animal patients.

This is a helpful diagnostic tool for checking internal organs and investigating cases of vomiting/diarrhoea.

This is his first time visiting Singapore and we hope you extend a warm welcome to him. :) 🇸🇬

In 2022, 11-years-old Ah Boy had a tumour growing in his RIGHT ear.

A surgery was done to remove the tumour and the affected ear canal.

In this case, due to the tumour spread, TECA-LBO was performed.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗢𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 (𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗔-𝗟𝗕𝗢)

This is a complex surgery that involves removing the entire ear canal and parts of the middle ear.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲.

So Ah Boy has no more ear canal (or 'ear-hole') in his right ear! 👂

Common reasons for surgery:

- End-stage ear infections

- Ear tumours

Thankfully, it has been a year since the TECA-LBO surgery.

Ah Boy is still cancer-free and recovering well!
