๐ŸŒŸ Honoring the Legacy of Karen Pryor ๐ŸŒŸ

It is with heavy hearts that we honor the recent passing of Karen Pryor, a true pioneer in animal training and behavioral science. ๐Ÿพ

Karenโ€™s groundbreaking work with positive reinforcement and clicker training revolutionized how we connect with and understand animals.

Her book, "Donโ€™t Shoot the Dog," remains a guiding light for animal trainers, pet owners and caregivers worldwide.

Through her wisdom and compassion, Karen showed us that kindness is the most powerful tool we have โ€” whether training a dog, a dolphin, or shaping our relationships.

Her influence will continue to inspire generations to come.

Rest in peace, Karen. Your legacy lives on. ๐Ÿ’™โœจ

๐ŸŽ„ Merry Christmas from All of Us at Atlas Vet!

Wishing you and your furry family members a season filled with love, joy, and wagging tails. ๐Ÿพ

Letโ€™s not forget to keep our pets safe during the holidays.

Watch out for festive hazards like chocolates, tinsel, and those irresistible turkey bones! ๐Ÿฆด

Thank you for trusting us with your pets this year.

๐ŸŽ„ Christmas closure dates:

Due to unforeseen manpower shortages, we regret to inform you that Atlas Veterinary Clinic & Surgery will be closed on the following dates:

24 Dec - Christmas
25 Dec - Christmas
26 Dec - Major medical case
27 Dec - Major medical case

Over the last few months, 2 vets left the clinic.

And it has severely affected our workflow and ability to accommodate the influx of appointments.

We are glad to share that we have a new vet joining us next month (January 2025)!

Dr Clara has 20 years of experience and we are very lucky to have her expertise.

In the meantime, we seek your kind understanding for the rest of 2024.

As I am typing this, it is already 9.30pm (way past our operating hours) and the team is actually preparing a blood transfusion for a dying cat.

We try to do what we can to save lives but at the end of the day...

We are only a small humble clinic.

If you have any feedback or suggestions, we would greatly appreciate it if you can submit a feedback form (link in bio ๐Ÿ”—).

Your input is valuable to us. We may follow up with you to discuss how we can address any concerns or improve our standard of care.

Thank you for your time and trust.

Thank you for bearing with our limitations and shortcomings.

We endeavor to come back stronger in 2025.

Merry Christmas,
Dr Chow
On behalf of Atlas Veterinary Clinic & Surgery

P.S. We now have 4 receptionists trying to manage our Whatsapp platform due to the overwhelming influx of text messages.

If we still missed your message, kindly bump your chat by sending us a courtesy message again. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Singapore's first successful minimally invasive heart valve surgery for dogs. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The heart implant was introduced through a catheter via a small opening from the side of the chest.

It was done under the guidance of C-arm fluoroscopy and transoesophageal echocardiogram (TEE).

The patient had Stage D Mitral Valve Disease (end-stage) BEFORE the surgery.

After rapid recovery, the dog went home after staying in hospital for 2 nights. ๐Ÿ™‚

Atlas Veterinary Clinic & Surgery thank our overseas partners for flying to Singapore so they can assist with the surgery.

We are proud to provide this groundbreaking treatment for dogs with Heart Failure in Singapore. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

Just because two things happen together doesnโ€™t mean one caused the other! ๐Ÿง

For example, if you notice your dog barks more on days you wear blue, it doesnโ€™t mean your shirt color causes the barking.

Itโ€™s likely a coincidence...

Or maybe something else is behind both!

This is what we call correlation โ€“ when two things are related but not directly causing one another.

Just because 2 things happen one after another, it does not mean one led to another.

*Read it again.* โ˜๏ธ

In medicine, this is important because seeing patterns doesn't always mean one incident caused the other.

Always look for factual evidence before assuming! ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿพ

Doing our part to train the next generation of veterinarians. ๐Ÿ’ช

At Atlas Vet, we have vet students join us every day as part of their school placement and training.

We provide opportunities for them to observe and participate in certain complex surgeries in close proximity.

Here, a final-year vet student is observing a perineal urethrostomy (PU) surgery.

This is a surgery done on male cats with repeated blocked bladders.

Our student slots are commonly booked out months in advance.

If you are interested, please email early to [email protected].

P.S. many vet clinics also accept vet students.

This is our way of giving back to the industry that trained us! โ˜€๏ธ

In the veterinary industry, coping with the sudden loss of a patient is one of the toughest parts of the job. ๐Ÿฅฒ

It's natural to feel grief and sometimes... even guilt.

But it's crucial to remember that not everything is within our control.

Leaning on colleagues and focusing on the positive impact we have help us navigate these tough moments.

It is important to find strength in the face of loss, to grow from each experience, and continue to care for every patient with compassion.

Over time, we learn that resilience in the face of loss is not about becoming indifferent...
..but about developing the strength to keep going.

Even when itโ€™s difficult. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ”ฅ

We learn to accept that we canโ€™t control everything.

And that bad things can still happen, even when we try our best.

โš ๏ธ Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery for dogs is now available in Singapore. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

A pioneering new treatment for Congestive Heart Failure is now available in Singapore at Atlas Veterinary Clinic & Surgery ().

This Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery called Trans-catheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) has been used widely in humans.

Results from a surgery programme in 40 dogs at Colorado State University suggest that dogs have a low complication rate (95% success rate) and can benefit greatly from the operation. ๐Ÿ’

This surgery is now done worldwide in vet hospitals with hundreds of successful cases.

- The risks of the minimally invasive technique are much lower than conventional open heart surgery.

- The benefits include reduced heart disease severity, reduced medicine use and improved exercise capability.

With our overseas visiting team, we are proud to be among the FIRST to provide this life-changing surgery in Singapore.

If your dog is suffering from Congestive Heart Failure, please reach out for more details.

๐Ÿค• A 14 year old rescue cat, FIV positive, suffered a left tibial comminuted fracture.

Due to the old age and FIV status, we expected a prolonged recovery.

The bone was broken into 3 pieces, so a load-sharing repair was not possible.

Orthogonal plating was done with two locking metal plates from ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

It is important to "criss-cross" the screws neatly within the bone as there's limited bone stock.

--

Based on a research paper in 2016, a single plate or plate-rod constructs have a 13% chance of plate failure by bending.

Therefore, we took a more aggressive approach as we have little room for error. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ”ฅ.

โš ๏ธ This case also highlights that a FIV positive status is not a death sentence. ๐Ÿ˜Š
