Tackling Wildlife Crime
The illegal wildlife trade subjects billions of animals to pain and suffering, and threatens to wipe out countless species. At ACRES, we combat this wildlife trade through our 24-hour Wildlife Crime Hotline, undercover investigations, public awareness campaigns and collaborations with other NGOs and the government. Our investigations have led to the capture of many wildlife

criminals. Our campaigns and engagements with the government have led to vast improvements to national wildlife protection laws. Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation
In 2009, we opened the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) in Singapore. We now rescue, treat and rehabilitate hundreds of wild animals every year, some from the illegal exotic pet trade and others native to the forests in Singapore and Lao PDR that are found injured, lost or disorientated. We run our wildlife rescue services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The facilities operate on a โ€œno killโ€ policy. Addressing Zoo Animal Welfare
We also conduct scientific investigations into the welfare of animals in zoos and marine parks throughout Asia. We use our findings to raise the standards of captive environments across the region, to ensure that at least the basic needs of the animals are met and to end cruel and exploitative circus-style animal shows. Our work with the zoo community, governments and local NGOs has led to improved welfare standards at zoos in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Humane Education
We never forget that the key to ending animal abuse is education. Our talks, roadshows and Humane Education programmes touch a wide cross section of society, from children in kindergarten to the elderly in the heartland, reaching over 100,000 individuals each year. We travel to schools as well as malls, both downtown and in the heartland. And almost every other day, we get a busload of school children visiting our Education Centre and Outdoor Conservation Classroom at the AWRC. Our aim is to encourage empathy, compassion and respect for animals as well as other human beings, and to inspire and empower children to change their world for the better. Community Outreach
We currently have over 20,000 volunteers and supporters in our database. Our volunteer opportunities promote volunteerism in Singapore and create a more caring and compassionate society. We also distribute grants for local animal protection projects, organise conferences and forums and encourage people to become involved in global animal protection campaigns. Promoting Cruelty-Free Living
Through our Cruelty-Free Living educational materials, we raise awareness about a wide range of household products, food items and fashion accessories that are either tested on animals or cause needless suffering and death in animal labs and factory farms. Our aim is to get consumers to make more humane, considerate and compassionate choices in their daily life.

Sadly, we suspect that the baby squirrel had entered the covered glue trap and the mother squirrel followed to help. The mother squirrel passed away a couple hours after rescue from stress and glue ingestion and inhalation, and the baby had to be euthanised due to ingestion and inhalation of glue as well. Our rescue officers recounted that they kept them in each otherโ€™s view during assessment and fluid therapy, to avoid further stress for the mother and baby.

One of the geckos was stuck to their predator, the paradise tree snake, and both were safely removed and released. The mynah and the pigeon were released eventually after glue removal.

We will bring you the stories of these wild victims of glue traps periodically, and we would like to thank all these callers who have been patiently answering our queries from our campaigns team, to collect data on glue trap location, actual intensity of rat issue in the area and who has placed the glue trap. This information is crucial for our further engagements with stakeholders on use of glue traps in Singapore.

ACRES is excited to speak and participate at the SPCA Singapore inaugural VOICE (Voices In Compassion and Empathy) Conference from 20 to 22 June 2024 at Nee Soon East Community Club Auditorium.

This three-day event brings together global and local experts in animal welfare as speakers and panellists. With over 300 attendees expected, the conference aims to ignite conversations and actions to combat animal cruelty.

For many of the youth delegates, this may be their first foray into animal welfare advocacy. Our OWN Campaign Manager JasmineVictorina Lye will be speaking on her Death By Man project and the plight of wildlife in Singapore, and our Co-CEO Anbarasi Boopal , will be speaking in a breakout session on Combatting the Illegal Wildlife Trade in Singapore, moderating a diverse expert panel on The Role of Youth in Animal Welfare and Advocacy, hosting a Masterclass on Harmonising Perspectives: Compassionate Conversations for Animal Protection and be a panel speaker on the topic of Tackling Animal Cruelty on Social Media Platforms.

Visit https://bit.ly/spca-voice to learn more on the informative and engaging topics that SPCA has lined up!

Delegates may also opt for experiential activities which include learning journeys to animal focused centers such as the SPCA, ACRES, AVS Centre for Animal Rehabilitation, and Canopy Veterinary Centre, and participate in an open-mic pitching session for the Animal Advocacy Grant.

Launched on the 28th of April 2024, the Singapore Terrestrial Conservation Plan (STCP) is a ground-up collaborative document that consolidates the knowledge, views, concerns, and recommendations of Singapore society for the conservation of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.

We thank and congratulate Sankar Ananthanarayanan and Dr Andie Ang for putting this remarkable document together, with valuable contributions from 40 experts in the nature community. With 9 key recommendations in this first plan, ACRES was glad to see that the human-wildlife interactions, environmental impact and nature education were well covered in these sections with detailed recommendations. We encourage the public to download and read to be aware: https://sg-tc-plan.weebly.com/

WILDLIFE RESCUE HOTLINE: UPDATEโ˜Ž๏ธ For the past decade, our 24-hour Wildlife Rescue Hotline has been vital in saving the lives of countless animals. Our dedicated staff work hard and tirelessly to rescue and give injured wild animals a second chance.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding and an increase in the number of wild animals we rescue and rehabilitate, we are unable to man the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Hotline for 24 hours. From 15 June 2024, the hotline will be manned from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily.

During unmanned hours, the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Hotline will provide automated guidance via WhatApp for situations that may be handled by untrained persons, and alternative means for animals who require urgent rescue.

We will review this periodically as we continue to fundraise to engage more staff. We seek your support for the work that we do through donations at https://acres.org.sg/donate-to-acres/. Thank you for your support!

Hear from Naomi Clark-Shen , our inspiring ACRES board member dedicated to marine conservation in Southeast Asia:

"I grew up in . When I was 11 years old, I turned vegetarian. Having recognized at an early age that all animals โ€“ including sea creatures like fish โ€“ have personalities and the capacity to feel pain, I decided that eating animals was indefensible.

Sea creatures continue to be the most exploited animals on Earth. Trillions are killed each year by aquaculture and fisheries. An estimated 90% of large predatory fishes such as tuna, swordfish, codfishes, and sharks have already disappeared because of fisheries. Yet despite the enormous impact fisheries have on the oceans, adopting a plant-based diet, or even reducing your meat intake, is rarely promoted as a solution to this crisis.

Some people in this world are not fortunate enough to have a choice when it comes to what they eat. But if you are able to, exploring a plant-based diet is truly impactful - for the animals, the climate, the oceans, and your health."

Animals deserve compassion, and the Earth deserves a respite from exploitation. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’™

Many of us may turn to use of live traps, poisons or the widely available glue traps for managing rodent issues. Glue traps cause prolonged suffering to the victims and are indiscriminate in their target animal/s. Unfortunately, there are currently no local guidelines and regulations on their sale and use among members of the public, leaving critical questions on humane treatment of trapped animals unanswered.

In November 2023, ACRES collaborated with Antzworkz Consultants and Rakuten to gain insight into public perceptions and awareness on the use of glue traps through a first ever such survey done in .

You can find the full press release at: https://str.sg/oYaht

Though there are new guidelines for the professional practitioners in the industry, the widespread public access to glue traps still remains an issue. We as members of public also have a huge role to play through better waste management and responsible civic attitudes - for example, refrain from littering, coupled with prompt and effective enforcement will go a long way in the rodent management in our . This is part of a series of awareness posts on the campaign in Singapore.

This is one of NParks' new recommendations to prevent the traps from ensnaring wildlife. Read more at straitstimes.com.

Often, we tend to attribute animal behaviour to survival instincts or needs. Many of us may have watched video clips of crows play-sliding on the snow or farm animals drawn to music - which have proven that animals are not only curious, but do seek joy and pleasure by engaging in pure play. Here is a recent paper proving bumble bees engage in play behaviour.

Here are some excerpts that made us smile:
โ— Ball rolling behaviour studied on these bumble bees showed that they were not driven by food exploration, clutter clearing or mating.
โ— Younger bees rolled more balls than older bees
โ— Male bees rolled individual balls for longer durations than females (they had more free time, compared to female bees who had to collect food for their nest).
โ— They also showed preference for the colour of the chamber where they rolled balls
โ— They rolled balls not because of stress (=happy bees played!)
โ— How does this affect our perception? Can we accept that - just like us and many documented play behaviours in mammals, positive affective states are important for animals too?

ENHANCED REPORTING FORM UP!

ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has been handling an average of 250 cases a year involving sale of prohibited wildlife or cruelty to wild animals. We work closely to complement the efforts of enforcement agencies. Over the past years, we noticed that more people care about the well-being of animals, and the way they are treated or managed, eventually coming forward to report crimes against them. In addition to reports on illegal wildlife trade, we have observed reports on cruel treatment of wildlife in our midst. We strongly believe that everyone should be empowered to understand what information is needed for further investigation, in particular with increasing reports on online crimes. We have now enhanced the reporting system to collect information to not only investigate when leads are available, but to observe trends. Our data-driven approach has resulted in addressing challenges that animals (and people) face in our . Data is crucial to strategise our efforts with limited resources - whether it is to bring attention to trends, to focus educational efforts to fill a gap or to plan a project on a particular widespread issue.

Alternatively you may write to us [email protected] if you have suggestions/queries as we hope to continuously improve through periodic reviews.

๐Ÿโœจ Understanding Human-Wildlife Encounters: A Call for Coexistence ๐ŸŒฟ

On 6 March 2024, ACRES received a call on our rescue hotline regarding an Equatorial spitting cobra seen inside an open drain beside a field in a school. According to the cleaner who pinned the snake down with a brush, he was concerned for the safety of the students who were participating in school camp activities about 20m away. When our rescue team arrived, the snake had died possibly from being pinned down. This is a common occurrence and a good example of human-wildlife encounters in our .

The burning questions are โ€“ Did the snake deserve to die? Can we do better? Can we empower personnel with knowledge to avoid fear? To put things in perspective, the snake wasnโ€™t going on a rampage killing or biting people. The cobra was just where they are usually sighted in drains with toads and frogs. Their presence is likely transient. In fact, snakes are shy animals and do not seek human presence. By confronting the snake, a venomous one at that, the cleaner (with little snake handling knowledge and skills) was unwittingly putting his own safety at risk!

What to do then, you ask? Firstly, the distance between the snake and the students is more than enough for school staff to calmly gather and move the students to another area. Monitor the snake naturally retreating, from a distance (5m or more). If the snake is moving towards an enclosed area, like the storeroom or office, you can call either of these help lines - ACRES (97837782) or NParks Animal Response Centre (1800-476-1600) for assistance.

Importantly, under the Wildlife Act, harming wildlife carries severe penalties. Our team has engaged with the school, fostering discussions on safe coexistence. We're pleased to share that the school management is receptive, considering revisions to their wildlife interaction protocols for staff and students.

AFTER 15 YEARS OF WAIT - HERE โ€™S TO A NEW BEGINNING

For 15 years, the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) Wildlife Rescue Centre has been occupying only a quarter of the 2ha land assigned to it. Around 2007, most of the land in Sungei Tengah was rendered unusable after it was contaminated by a contractor the society engaged to build an animal shelter. With the freedom to expand now, Mr Kalai (our Co-CEO) hopes to build a sanctuary while retaining pockets of trees and flora.

โ€œThe pandemic was really a strange time for us. I was expecting our call volume to go down but instead it went up. It was a difficult situation because we were trying to attend to more animals with less manpower,โ€ Mr Kalai said.
Acresโ€™ staff and volunteers were able to pull it off because of their hard work, he added. โ€œDuring this time, we saw several breakthroughs in rehabilitation work. I also felt that this massive body of work we did really touched the hearts of the community.

โ€œWe dug deep during this period and it gave me aspirations towards what new things we can achieve. The increase in numbers (of animals needing help) showed that there is a need for our work, and while the quantity of animals rescued is important, the quality of their care is also crucial.โ€

The return of the land and plans to enlarge the wildlife centre were announced at an Acres charity gala at Sands Expo and Convention Centre on May 18. Speaking to ST on May 21, Mr Kalai said: โ€œWe have an opportunity to go back to what we were supposed to do originally, but at the same time I see it as an expansion.โ€ โ€œNow with the foliage (that blossomed after the land was disused), I think it adds some character to the place and I want it to be like a rehab sanctuary for animals within a forest.โ€

๐Ÿข๐Ÿ’š HONOURING WORLD TURTLE DAY IN THE WORDS OF OUR WILDLIFE VET NURSE ALICIA ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿข

As a , I've witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by our precious turtles. Many of our rescued turtles suffered injuries caused by lodged in their mouths or throats. Others have fallen victim to road accidents, their shells shattered by passing cars.

For these resilient creatures, a fractured shell isn't just a surface woundโ€”it's a matter of life and death. Their shells, composed of spine and skeleton, are their armour and sanctuary. With nerve endings in their shells sensitive enough to feel taps or scratches, each fracture inflicts pain and damage.

Treating these gentle beings isn't easy. Wild turtles, often shy and reclusive, retreat into their shells at the slightest hint of intervention. Patience becomes our greatest ally, especially when caring for species like the Malayan box turtles, who possess a remarkable ability to seal themselves within their shells like a protective box. It's a delicate dance of observation and gentle care, ensuring they emerge from their shells and recover with as little stress as possible. - Alicia Wee (ACRES Veterinary Nurse)

On this World Turtle Day, let's commit to taking action for turtles - by slowing down for wildlife crossing, or by not supporting exploitation of wildlife such as consuming turtle meat or buying exotic turtles (including ) as pets. Every small act makes a big difference in ensuring a brighter future for our beloved turtles.

๐Ÿฆ‰THE OWLETS HAVE FLEDGED๐Ÿฆ‰ - CRUCIAL PERIOD TO STOP CROWDING AROUND๐Ÿšทโ›”

Video taken by: Yane Kang ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

Thanks to many of you who called and wrote to us, concerned about the owlets. The Telok Blangah owlets have fledged and have left the nest. On the night of 9th May, our hotline received several calls from the public that one of the owlets had fallen onto the ground and at least once was on the road. Members of the public helped to carry the young owl onto the grass patch.
The owlets are now learning to fly.
๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿฆ‰THIS IS A CRUCIAL PHASE๐Ÿฆ‰๐Ÿšจ, where they will be hopping between branches, taking short flights between trees to strengthen their flight muscles - ALL that needs to happen under the supervision of their parents.

Last night, we placed the owlet as high up as we could, on the tree. The idea is so the owl can be better hidden and have the chance to hop amongst branches without falling.

This is a critical stage, and we sincerely appeal to photographers & the public to not surround the area. Presence of many people around fledged owlets can prevent the parents from giving the much needed guidance. Thank you for all the cooperation thus far!

Let us be responsible and give our urban raptors the best possible chance to survive.
