Tackling Wildlife Crime
The illegal wildlife trade subjects billions of animals to pain and suffering, and threatens to wipe out countless species. At ACRES, we combat this wildlife trade through our 24-hour Wildlife Crime Hotline, undercover investigations, public awareness campaigns and collaborations with other NGOs and the government. Our investigations have led to the capture of many wildlife

criminals. Our campaigns and engagements with the government have led to vast improvements to national wildlife protection laws. Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation
In 2009, we opened the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) in Singapore. We now rescue, treat and rehabilitate hundreds of wild animals every year, some from the illegal exotic pet trade and others native to the forests in Singapore and Lao PDR that are found injured, lost or disorientated. We run our wildlife rescue services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The facilities operate on a “no kill” policy. Addressing Zoo Animal Welfare
We also conduct scientific investigations into the welfare of animals in zoos and marine parks throughout Asia. We use our findings to raise the standards of captive environments across the region, to ensure that at least the basic needs of the animals are met and to end cruel and exploitative circus-style animal shows. Our work with the zoo community, governments and local NGOs has led to improved welfare standards at zoos in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Humane Education
We never forget that the key to ending animal abuse is education. Our talks, roadshows and Humane Education programmes touch a wide cross section of society, from children in kindergarten to the elderly in the heartland, reaching over 100,000 individuals each year. We travel to schools as well as malls, both downtown and in the heartland. And almost every other day, we get a busload of school children visiting our Education Centre and Outdoor Conservation Classroom at the AWRC. Our aim is to encourage empathy, compassion and respect for animals as well as other human beings, and to inspire and empower children to change their world for the better. Community Outreach
We currently have over 20,000 volunteers and supporters in our database. Our volunteer opportunities promote volunteerism in Singapore and create a more caring and compassionate society. We also distribute grants for local animal protection projects, organise conferences and forums and encourage people to become involved in global animal protection campaigns. Promoting Cruelty-Free Living
Through our Cruelty-Free Living educational materials, we raise awareness about a wide range of household products, food items and fashion accessories that are either tested on animals or cause needless suffering and death in animal labs and factory farms. Our aim is to get consumers to make more humane, considerate and compassionate choices in their daily life.

𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦 (reduce a wha-?)

So, you have a soft spot for animals. It infuriates you when you see or hear of the injustice done unto animals. On the other hand, you find it hard to say no to fried chicken, or resist a bowl of exotic turtle soup.

This is where Reducetarianism comes in, and it’s a simple way to make a difference for animals. Reducing your consumption of red meat, white meat, eggs or dairy is a powerful first step. Simple changes like these can make a difference:
Going egg-free two days a week.
Swap breakfast cereal milk for a non-dairy alternative.
Replacing a meat dish with your favourite sambal goreng or mala mushroom tofu one day a week.

We’re not morally perfect, so be kind to animals and yourself. It’s one thing to eat more vegetables, but it’s a pretty amazing thing knowing you can do so much with a powerful first step.

𝐊𝐄𝐄𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐄𝐍𝐒 🐔 𝐀𝐒 𝐏𝐄𝐓𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐀𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐄?

The trend of keeping chickens is growing, and at ACRES, we frequently see welfare cases reported. Before you decide to adopt chickens or already have one, here are some key things to consider:

1️⃣ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐬?
In Singapore, you can keep up to 10 poultry ONLY on private properties. Pet shops are not permitted to sell poultry. Familiarise yourself with NParks’ guidelines: https://www.nparks.gov.sg/avs/resources/legislation/-/media/fd62783337544826939ca57461d7677c.ashx
2️⃣ 𝐃𝐨 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫?
Each chicken needs at least 𝟐-𝟑 𝐬𝐪 𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩 for roosting and 𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 to run, perch, dust bathe and more. Overcrowding can lead to stress, feather loss, and injuries.

3️⃣ 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦?
Since the 2019 pandemic, pet abandonment rates have risen. Abandoned poultry often suffer injuries, illnesses, and emotional distress, and they can breed with wild populations, leading to noise complaints and culling. Adopt responsibly and never buy any live animals online.

Standing Against Cruelty to All Wildlife

We share about a horrific case of a reticulated python being burned alive during capture.

This incident occured on 20 November 2024. As we await the enforcement action outcome, Advocacy Co-CEO Anbarasi (Anbu) Boopal shares our frustration about the violent crimes against snakes.

Are animals truly protected by our laws, or is the lack of effective deterrents allowing these tragic incidents to continue, costing the lives of the voiceless?

In 2009, Our wildlife enclosures in the back of our 2-hectare land was made unusable after the contractors contaminated it with illegal landfill. Designed as a rehabilitative centre and halfway house for the illegal wildlife trade victims and injured native wildlife, our original land was reduced to a mere 0.5 hectares overnight.

Fast forward to 2024, we’ve cleared surveys and thorough testings, and we’re revving up preparation to repurpose a portion of the land.

This massive project will take $50,000 for the initial steps, which we’re raising via our Festive Season Fundraising Campaign. This amount will cover the necessary documentation and preliminary clearing work, and we need your help!

We’re thrilled to invite you to our Open House on Saturday, 23rd November! Join us for guided tours around the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre, engaging talks, and fun family-friendly activities.

Discover how you can make a difference in the animal protection movement and directly support animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.

See you at our Festive Season Fundraising Open House!

𝐎𝐂𝐓 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐔𝐏: 𝟐𝟖 𝐆𝐋𝐔𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐏 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐒

October 2024 saw 28 glue trap victims, and as expected, many animals did not survive the ordeal. On a positive note, 24 individuals spoke up and made a difference for these animals.

Many of the kind souls made their way to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre to drop off the animals. If you’re one of them reading this, please know that we are extremely grateful for your efforts! It certainly makes a world of difference for our staff given our limited resources. However, we regret that this means we are unable to provide updates and photos for all rescue cases.

Please continue to speak out against glue traps and boards. Your actions to help these animals is a beacon of hope and motivates us to continue the work we do.

This Thanksgiving and festive season, we invite you to say “No, Thanks” to eating turkeys (and other animals) as an act of kindness and gratitude. Did you know that turkeys can live up to 10 years, but those raised for food are often slaughtered at just 14-20 weeks—about the age of a 4-year-old child?

Serving delicious plant-based dishes and choosing cruelty-free products add to a celebration of life, love, and respect for animals and our planet. 🌎

Plant-based roasts make for amazing holiday meals, and if you’d like more vegan recipe ideas, join us at our open house! Happy holidays! 🌱🦃✨

𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐲 @ 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐮 𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝟔𝟐

A notice placed at lift lobbies alerted residents to look out for a man who was feeding poisoned “yellowish rice” to pigeons. He was shortly seen collecting their carcasses at Blocks 616 to 620.

Considering the nature of the cruelty case, we advise that residents in the area take precaution as they bring their dogs out for walks, and to keep an eye out for community cats who may have ingested the poisoned rice.

The ACRES investigations team conducted preliminary investigations and identified that the notice was not placed by the Marsiling-Yew Tee town council and the individual in the photos is not related to the town council’s bird management operations.

Please report such suspicious activities to NParks and, if necessary, the police, with pertinent information/evidence. ACRES will continue to appeal to town councils to address the root cause of urban bird population increase, and move away from inhumane culling. Want to learn more about urban bird issues? Come join us in a conversation at our upcoming OpenHouse. Link in Bio.

The more than 100 quail chicks found discarded in a rubbish bin on Oct 27 were discovered outside Singapore’s only licensed quail farm, Quailico Eggs, The Straits Times has learnt.
The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) found the 106 live quail chicks in a green rubbish bin in Lim Chu Kang, along with hundreds of lifeless chicks and unhatched eggs. None of the live chicks survived.
“We believe that the chicks didn’t survive likely due to the injuries from being on top of each other, premature hatching and resulting stress. The rescued chicks were weak, most could not stand on their own, were wheezing and had abnormal position,” said Ms Anbarasi. (ACRES’s Co-CEO)

ACRES hopes that action is taken for abandoning fertilised eggs resulting in immense suffering and death for these chicks, and gaps are addressed in terms of safeguarding animal welfare and public health concerns.

106 LIVE QUAIL CHICKS RESCUED FROM A BIN On 27th Oct 2024 late at night, a concerned caller to our wildlife rescue hotline reported chirping sounds from a green bin in Lim Chu Kang.

Inside, a quail chick was found atop a black trash bag, with more chirping sounds from below. Sadly, we found the bag to contain 106 live chicks, in addition to lifeless chicks and unhatched eggs.

It was a frustrating find for us. And despite our best efforts, none of the chicks survived.

We have filed a case with NParks to investigate how and why such a large number of fertilised quail eggs and chicks were left in a bin.

We thank the caller for alerting us!
