Tackling Wildlife Crime
The illegal wildlife trade subjects billions of animals to pain and suffering, and threatens to wipe out countless species. At ACRES, we combat this wildlife trade through our 24-hour Wildlife Crime Hotline, undercover investigations, public awareness campaigns and collaborations with other NGOs and the government. Our investigations have led to the capture of many wildlife

criminals. Our campaigns and engagements with the government have led to vast improvements to national wildlife protection laws. Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation
In 2009, we opened the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) in Singapore. In 2012, we established the ACRES Lao Wildlife Sanctuary. We now rescue, treat and rehabilitate hundreds of wild animals every year, some from the illegal exotic pet trade and others native to the forests in Singapore and Lao PDR that are found injured, lost or disorientated. We run our wildlife rescue services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Addressing Zoo Animal Welfare
We also conduct scientific investigations into the welfare of animals in zoos and marine parks throughout Asia. We use our findings to raise the standards of captive environments across the region, to ensure that at least the basic needs of the animals are met and to end cruel and exploitative circus-style animal shows. Our work with the zoo community, governments and local NGOs has led to improved welfare standards at zoos in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. Humane Education
We never forget that the key to ending animal abuse is education. Our talks, roadshows and Humane Education programmes touch a wide cross section of society, from children in kindergarten to the elderly in the heartland, reaching over 100,000 individuals each year. We travel to schools as well as malls, both downtown and in the heartland. And almost every other day, we get a busload of school children visiting our Education Centre and Outdoor Conservation Classroom at the AWRC. Our aim is to encourage empathy, compassion and respect for animals as well as other human beings, and to inspire and empower children to change their world for the better. Community Outreach
We currently have over 20,000 volunteers and supporters in our database. Our volunteer opportunities promote volunteerism in Singapore and create a more caring and compassionate society. We also distribute grants for local animal protection projects, organise conferences and forums and encourage people to become involved in global animal protection campaigns. Promoting Cruelty-Free Living
Through our Cruelty-Free Living educational materials, we raise awareness about a wide range of household products, food items and fashion accessories that are either tested on animals or cause needless suffering and death in animal labs and factory farms. Our aim is to get consumers to make more humane, considerate and compassionate choices in their daily life.

The Animal Crime Investigations Unit responded to a report of a bird trap. The trap baited with fruit was empty, but it led to another discovery. Luna, a spotted dove, was found in a cage after likely flying in for food. She had old wounds on her carpus joints (like our wrists) from hitting against the bars, a common sign in wild caught birds.

The trap was removed by the crime team and the owners were educated that:
➊ Trapping and caging wildlife is illegal, and
➋ Feeding wildlife is illegal.

After an assessment, Luna was cleared by our vet and released back into the wild where she belongs.

If you see traps like the one in slide 3, email [email protected] or WhatsApp our hotline at 9783 7782.

Donations are much needed to keep this work going, and are eligible for 250% tax deduction (acres.org.sg/donate-to-acres).

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙀𝙭𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙊𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧 (𝙒𝙀 𝙊𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧)?
Under the 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁 (𝗪𝗔), killing, trapping, or keeping wildlife requires approval from the Director-General. But the WE Order excludes some species, allowing them to be culled without approval.

𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘀 (𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱)
❌ House Crow
❌ Common Rock Pigeon
❌ Common Mynah
❌ White-vented Mynah
These birds can currently be culled without oversight.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿?
✔ Returns these birds under Wildlife Act protection.
✔ Prevents indiscriminate, unjustified depopulation.
✔ Safeguards against cruelty (Note: animal cruelty laws still apply!)

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿: 𝗔 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
If culling is considered, it must be:
- Backed by scientific evidence (ecosystem impact, risks, population data).
- Consider humane or non-lethal alternatives first.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗖𝘂𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
- Transparency matters! Reports must include:
- Reasons for depopulation
- Number & species killed (intentional or accidental)
- Methods used & efforts to minimise suffering

𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟰
- Protects ecosystems altogether
- Centralises oversight for consistency & accountability
- Reduces unnecessary suffering of birds

By removing exemptions, we create stronger safeguards for our wildlife, while still allowing for responsible and humane management when necessary.

𝘼𝘾𝙍𝙀𝙎' 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩: 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙖𝙧 𝙙𝙚𝙚𝙧 🦌

We rescued a sambar deer fawn who was stuck in a drain, thanks to Mr. Jay Lim from Singapore Sambar Deer group.

With no sign of the fawn’s parents, ACRES rehabilitated the fawn back to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) for care as our rescue team searched for the parents.

Eventually when the parents were located, we rushed down at 4:30am to reunite the sambar deer fawn with them! ❤️

This is the first sambar deer that we have successfully rescued and released — another ACRES’ first! ✨As we continue our effort to protect wildlife in Singapore – please donate at bit.ly/acresgala2025 and help us reach our goal of $400,000 to expand our sanctuary for the animals.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
Glue traps are cruel and indiscriminate. They’ve ensnared not only rodents but also protected wildlife such as kingfishers, bats, and civets, often causing prolonged suffering or death.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿:
Implement legal restrictions to prohibit or significantly regulate glue trap sales and usage in Singapore.

Protect animals by phasing out this ineffective method in favor of humane alternatives.

This recommendation reflects ACRES’s call to end inhumane pest control methods and ensure every animal in Singapore is treated with compassion and reflects a broader push for compassionate and effective wildlife protection.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽:

𝟭. 𝗦𝗮𝘆 𝗡𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘀 — Avoid buying/using them at home, in shops, or for pest control. Choose humane options like rodent-proofing and address root causes (often poor waste management).

𝟮. 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 — Tell friends, family, and businesses why glue traps cause immense suffering to both target and non-target animals.

𝟯. 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 — If you see glue traps for sale, politely request for retailers to stop, educate them on the ill effects and suggest humane alternatives (rodent-proof bins, barriers, sealants, natural deterrents).

𝟰. 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 — Check if they use glue traps, if yes, request humane alternatives.

𝟱. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 — Write to your MP or town council to back a phase-out of glue traps in Singapore.

𝟲. 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 — If you find an animal stuck on a glue trap, call ACRES Wildlife Rescue Hotline: 9783 7782 immediately.

𝟳. 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 — Share ACRES’ posts to spread the message: glue traps are cruel and unnecessary.

ACRES and SPCA have jointly released the first-ever White Paper with 15 key recommendations to strengthen animal welfare protections in Singapore.
Key proposals include:
* Empowering welfare groups with stronger enforcement powers during rescues.

* Setting a minimum age requirement of 16 years for pet ownership.

* Scaling up penalties under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act and Animals and Birds Act to deter illegal wildlife trade.

* Phasing out cruel practices such as the use of glue traps, which have caused immense suffering to countless wild and protected animals.

* Establishing an Animal Welfare Expert Advisory Panel of veterinarians, lawyers, researchers, and animal welfare groups to guide policies.

* Review the Wildlife (Exemption) Order 2020 to better protect birds. This means either removing bird species from the exemption list or introducing conditions that must be met before exemptions can be used.

* Impose obligations on online service providers to prohibit the sale or offering for sale of companion animals, wildlife and scheduled species without a licence via online material.

Our CEO, Kalaivanan, on the recommendation to regulate the sale and use of glue traps: “Animals experience a lot of pain when they get stuck in glue traps, and many end up dying. These traps are a very mediaeval and ancient way of catching animals, and is something we should move away from”.

This White Paper represents a united call to action, for stronger laws, better enforcement, and deeper public awareness, so that every animal in Singapore is treated with compassion and respect.

Our sincere thanks to Minister Alvin Tan for meeting with us and the SPCA to hear our recommendations and for his support in strengthening animal protection in Singapore.

While we run a wildlife rescue centre, today we pause to celebrate International Dog Day and remember four incredible souls, Sunshine, Scrappy, Mocha, and Brownie, who were once part of the ACRES team.

Each had a story. Each brought us laughter, love, and unforgettable moments. Though they’re no longer with us, their spirit still lingers in every corner of ACRES.

They will be forever remembered, forever missed. ❤️
