The Chocolate story is one of grace, wisdom, and purpose.

Much like any devoted dog guardian entrusting their pup’s grooming to a professional, our experience fifteen years ago left us uncertain and worried, with a distraught, shaken dog. The decision to take Chocolate’s grooming into our own hands turned into a heartfelt mission to call for better care for his kind.

The trauma from his experience made grooming top his blacklist. He wasn’t an easy pup to groom. In learning to care for his needs, we learned to listen without words, to kindly empathise, and to practice patience. With much trial and error in a time when guidance was non-existent, his grace allowed us to find our way.

We see Bubbly Petz as Chocolate’s guiding nudge to create change, to do better. When things get tough and the convenient, popular path seems tempting, his wisdom always reminds us to choose what’s right over what’s easy. Gently yet fervently, his spirit keeps us grounded, acknowledging that we are far from perfect, and reinforcing our duty as caregivers to never stop learning and trying.

Our long-time customer and dear friend Andrew captured Chocolate’s essence perfectly — 𝘈 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭, 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘥𝘰𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘧 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮. We couldn’t agree more.

Our home and the studio may be quieter without the Bossboi’s presence, but his influence echoes loudly in the choices we make and will continue to guide us forward each day.

When it comes to assisting our furbuddies through grooming procedures, many would think that treats are the only go-to. Essentially, different doggos have different innate needs to feel supported. It can be the guardian’s presence, the freedom to move around and away, and/or play - just to name a few.

Surely, reducing grooming fears and anxieties is a complex, multi-faceted process that involves more than just these positive reinforcers — a discipline that we earnestly invest in learning and applying 📚

We often refer to dogs as our pets. An animal that the kids can play with. A captive friend whose fur we can cry into on a bad day. We often hear them called ‘it’ and expect them to fit into a little set of rules to be a good family pet. And if they don’t meet our expectations or stay enthusiastic and trouble-free housemates, we have cultivated a belief that we must train them, and then they will behave better.

But what about what the dog wants?

Or how they feel?

And what about all the lessons we can learn from them? What if we stop trying to impose our will onto them? Imagine if your dog could do so much more than being a good family pet.

I urge you now to give pause on the idea that your dog might just need more training and instead step back and watch them better, learn their language, question their beliefs, and improve their agency.

Dog training has been the go-to response to the family dog simply showing us their needs for too long. It’s time to rethink the place of dog training.

It’s time to have a much better and more enriching relationship with our dogs, where creating different responses and behaviour through training is a small part of the bigger picture -and not the whole canvas.

It’s been a year of learning and growth ✨

In 2021 our priority has been to build on our commitment to humane and low-stress grooming for our animal friends. As we sought to raise the standard of care for the doggos and cats at Bubbly Petz and Hey Good Cat, the grooming team spent the year refining and advancing our approach, and a milestone was having an additional four team members on board with the Fear-Free certification program - they’re currently training extensively to integrate the skills and knowledge of reducing grooming fears and anxieties in our furry friends at every opportunity ✊🏼

It matters lots to us our animal friends receive the quality and consistency they need, with that we had to limit our grooming slots in the past months 🥲 BUT rest assured it’s temporary and we’re looking forward to assisting more fur-friends with their grooming needs coming year as the team gets ready!

There’s still much work to do in creating a world where all animals are treated with the kindness and respect they deserve, and it’s a journey we couldn’t do without you ✨ A heartfelt thank you to all of you for sticking with us, for believing in our cause, and for growing and learning together with us. Happy 2022 and may all we do be guided by kindness and joy 🐾🌱💖

A common question that we get asked is – what is Low-Stress Grooming? :

With the term used a lot more these days, what does it exactly entail? Low-stress grooming definitely isn’t mindlessly offering endless pats, gentle massages and treats during sessions, but an all-rounded approach to minimize stressors in every aspect of the grooming process from the environment to the subtle interactions we have with our animal friends.

In addition to keeping the grooming environment calm, it’s a conscious process of learning to identify fearful signals in our animal friends and approaching grooming with a combination of reward-based methods and desensitization customized for each individual with the aim to reduce fears and anxieties. Humanity is valued over vanity here and it is important for us to not push through your pets’ fear response for the sake of getting the job done, and the grooming team is inculcated to always use gentle touch, never causing pain or using intimidation.

As grooming professionals and caregivers we believe in the moral duty towards animals in our care, and it is an ongoing commitment in the studio to educate and equip ourselves with ways to keep our animal friends comfortable, safe and calm. 🥰

Forcing compliance through instilling fear goes against every definition of being a responsible, compassionate animal guardian, yet this approach is but all too common :( we need to know better and do better for our animal friends.

There is a video circulating of aversive training methods being used on dogs. The methods are completely unacceptable from an animal welfare standpoint and unfortunately all too common in the dog training industry. It's time for such practices to end. We have referred this case to the authorities.
