-- Hi Dr Tay, what kinds of ball games can I do with my dog other than just throwing a tennis ball?
-- Playing ball games with your dog is one of the best ways to strengthen your bond while providing physical and mental stimulation. Find the right type of ball game that matches your dog's size, energy level and interests.
(a) Classic Fetch - this is the most well-known and beloved ball game for dogs. Dog loves to run and chase. All you need is a ball you can throw and give the command “Fetch!”. The dog is happy running after the ball, bringing it back to you and anticipating another round of throw. Just make sure the ball is appropriate to the size of the jaw, neither too big to bite on nor too small that could be a swallowing danger.
(b) Soccer - turing the classic fetch into another chasing game is soccer. You can kick the ball around and encouraging your dog to chase after it. Dogs can be trained to dribble the ball with their nose and paws! Remember to reward or praise your puppy when they get the ball back to you.
(c) Basketball - this can be a challenge but rewarding to see your dog able to tip a ball through a hoop. Use a light and bouncy ball that you can guide your dog to nose the ball towards a low hoop. Once your dog is used to a short range shot, gradually increase the distance and height. Eventually your dog will be able to nose a ball through the hoop as an impressive trick!
Playing ball sports allows you to strengthen your relationship with your dog. You can rotate through the games or a variety of balls to keep the game exciting and fresh. There are other substitutes such as discs or bone toys that can be used for fetch too to make your dog happy and healthy.
