Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter – OSCAS A non-profit dog shelter devoted to caring for rescued Singapore Specials and abandoned dogs. Stray rescue in Singapore is a long tiring journey.

Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter (OSCAS) is a registered charity and non-profit dog shelter that has been in existence since 2006. Over the years, the shelter has rescued mainly stray or abandoned dogs from the streets or from being culled. About a hundred Singapore Specials currently call this shelter home and needless to say, it can only be sustained with help from trusty volunteers and kind donations or sponsorships. Join us to be their voice.

Are you able to volunteer with us on weekday mornings?

If you have experience with dogs and can commit on a regular weekly basis as a long-term volunteer, we need you!

We are looking for fit volunteers who can dedicate their time on a weekday morning to help with mainly walking the dogs, some cleaning, bathing, and any other shelter duties required.

We have a core group who has been volunteering for the past years on a regular weekly basis and we are looking for more such dedicated people. You would be buddied up with a senior volunteer to learn the procedures and get to know the dogs, who are predominantly seniors.

It takes time and effort to train new volunteers so we are only looking for new volunteers who have experience with dogs, can follow procedures, have good common sense, good communication with a team and most importantly, can commit on a regular long-term basis.

You will be investing time to know all the dogs and learn to read their behaviour, so committing on a regular long-term basis is the only way to truly know them, build up trust and a bond, and even help to rehabilitate those that still need to learn to walk on leash – if you have such experience. We use harnesses to walk our dogs for their comfort and safety and we practise positive-reinforcement fear-free methods to allow the dogs to be their best selves, build confidence and enjoy the freedom to walk on a loose leash when safety allows, with the aim to get them ready to be adopted!

The shelter is located at Sungei Tengah and you would need to be there on time to start from 8am (some go in earlier) until finished which is usually by noon.

If you meet the above, are over 20 years old, please email to [email protected] and cc [email protected] to register your interest. Please indicate which weekday morning you are available, and an Indemnity Form will be sent.

Many of our dogs are ready and waiting for their forever home but being more senior dogs, like the playful, young-at-heart and affectionate Lucky, they sadly don’t attract as much interest. If you can’t volunteer but are looking to ADOPT please look through our adoption gallery (www.oscas.sg/adoption-gallery) and read about our adoption process on the website (www.oscas.sg/help-adopt) before reaching us at [email protected].

URGENT! APPEAL FOR BLOOD DONORS

Our sweet boy Aziz needs help. Today we discovered that our senior boy needs an urgent splenectomy. But as his blood counts are dangerously low, he needs a blood transfusion as soon as possible.

We are looking for a young, healthy dog who:

* Weighs over 21 kilograms
* Does not currently have, or has ever had, tick fever
* Is on heartworm/tick/flea prevention
* Is not suffering from anemia
* Does not have kidney or liver issues

Any blood type will do.

If your furbaby is the hero that can save Aziz, please WhatsApp us on 98184329.

Looking for a happy, friendly and active furry companion to enjoy the outdoors with and chill out together at home? Then you need to meet Sheru!

It’s been over a year Sheru has been with us since he was left behind when his family migrated overseas. His previous home was not found by us, but we took him and his housemate Prince in when they were both surrendered. Prince has since found his new forever home and settled in easily with a young toddler too. We know Sheru would be the same way. He enjoys the company of people and female dogs.

Sheru is a young and healthy 7 year old, confident but also chill, a smart cookie, knows basic commands, walks great on leash, and would make a loyal and loving companion. What more can you ask for?

He is also on the smaller side for a Singapore Special hence HDB-approved and suitable for first-time dog parents.

If you can be this cute lovable boy’s new FOREVER home, please email us at [email protected] telling us why you’d be a good match. We will reply with an application form.

Please be sure to read our adoption process and considerations on our website: www.oscas.sg/help-adopt

Prince finds his castle to call home!

Prince was left behind when his family migrated overseas along with Sheru, still looking for his home. They arrived at the shelter in February 2023, Prince was very confused and cried, but it didn’t take long for our volunteers to shower him with love and seek to find this sweet boy the right home who would never abandon a dog.

One year later, his home was found with Chris & Marika, who had adopted a dog from us before, Tigger, who sadly passed last year of cancer but having a big heart for dogs they got back in touch to adopt another dog, and Prince was the perfect match! Following they share their adoption journey with Prince …

“Have you ever met someone and instantly felt a connection? That's exactly how it was when we first laid eyes on Prince, a charming 7-year-old dog, at OSCAS shelter. His gentle and soulful eyes captured our heart from the moment we met.

“Walking through the shelter, we couldn't help noticing Prince sitting quietly in his kennel, watching the world go by with a hopeful gaze. Approaching him, we could sense his curiosity and longing for companionship. We knew Prince was special, so we wanted to give him the loving home he deserved.

“Bringing Prince home was very exciting. From the first day he settled into his new home with us and his surroundings smoothly. It was so heartwarming to witness him gradually coming out of his shell, revealing his playful personality and unwavering loyalty.

“Prince is part of our family now. His presence fills our home with warmth and laughter, and his unconditional love brings us immeasurable joy. Watching him thrive and grow more confident with each passing day was a testament to the transformative power of adoption.

“Prince may have been 7 years old when we brought him home, but to us, he was forever young at heart, reminding us that love knows no age.

“If you're considering adding a furry friend to your family, we recommend you to visit your local animal shelter. Who knows, you might just meet your very own Prince – a loyal companion ready to embark on a journey of love and companionship with you.”

Thank you, Chris & Marika, for opening your home again to another dog who we know will be cherished and have a home forever.

SEEKING A MIRACLE HOME FOR KOPI

Kopi is a young 4-year-old who had been living in a home since he was a puppy but as he got bigger, he was no longer wanted and left abandoned in a factory.

He came to us only a couple of weeks ago very confused and upset. We sent him for further checks as he was suffering from diarrhoea. It was discovered he has cancer – large cell lyphoma.

His prognosis of life expectancy is not good but based on the treatment options we want to give him the best chance and to do so in a more peaceful home environment. We are hoping to find a miracle kind-hearted fosterer who can give him the comfort, care and love he deserves for however long he has left.

Kopi is a sweet, friendly, well mannered young dog who enjoys going out for walks and walks easily on leash. We hope he can find a suitable home to allow him more of this and to spend the rest of what remains of his life enjoying the things a dog should in comfort and with less stress. We will provide the financial support for his care.

If you are able to open your heart and home for this sweet, handsome young dog please email us at [email protected] and we can provide you with more details or answers to any questions.

The beloved Singapore Specials at our shelter mean the world to us. Whether they're strays navigating crowded streets or dogs rescued from abuse, neglect or surrender, our commitment remains unwavering: to serve as a sanctuary to all our rescues until homes can be found.

This commitment inspired the founding of Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter.

Today, our organisation operates six units in Sungei Tengah, striving to offer optimal care for the 65 dogs we currently have, while facilitating each dogs' adoption into loving families. Sustaining the shelter, however, entails significant operational expenses.

These expenses encompass rent, utilities, staff salaries, transportation to clinics, vet costs, medical care and the procurement of food, supplements, and cleaning materials. In 2021, our operational costs totalled $420k. In 2022 and 2023, they rose to $630k and $650k respectively. We anticipate further increases in 2024.

Each contribution made to this campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Tote Board and the Government through the Enhanced Fund-Raising Programme, amplifying the impact of your generosity.

Having gone through life always together: playing, sleeping, eating, walking and having to be taken out of their first home, we always hoped siblings Jolie & Jay (now Jasper) would find a new loving home together, and finally, after waiting 1.5 years, they have!

Their new pawrents Elaine & Stephen went to great effort to spend time regularly visiting and bonding with this adorable duo over three months until they could finally take them home. Following they share their adoption journey …

“We moved to Singapore in August of 2023, and always wanted to adopt a local dog. Our new home wouldn’t be ready until December, but we were eager to visit the shelters to find the right one for us. Most organizations could not facilitate it because a homestay with us would be a few months away. Until we saw Jasper and Jolie’s profiles on OSCAS website and reached out, thinking we could give one of them a great life; the response was so prompt and within the same night, we had our first meeting scheduled.

“Once we met Jasper and Jolie, who had been rescued from the jungle as puppies and grew up together, we quickly realized that we didn’t have the heart to separate them. It would have to be both or neither.

“Thanks to the patience and selflessness of OSCAS’s great rehoming and volunteering team, especially Theresa, Jennica, and Terence, we were able to visit them several times a week over a few months. Seeing the siblings at the shelter - even if it meant we had to get up at 5am - quickly became the highlight of our weeks. We got to know their unique personalities and form a strong bond with them through our regular visiting routine. It filled our hearts with joy seeing how excited they were when we came through the door and got more difficult to say goodbye each time. Eventually, we became comfortable taking the leap of faith to adopt them both.

“It’s been a month since they joined our family and it has made our new lives in Singapore even more fulfilling, being able to give these loving and beautiful dogs a forever home and to experience the affection and joy they bring to us every day. Their transition from the shelter to a home environment has gone so smoothly because of the trust we had built leading up to the homestay. There is still much work ahead so they can be fully socialized and settled into their new life, but it will be well worth it. We couldn’t have asked for better companions, and now it’s impossible to imagine our lives with only one of them!”

Thank you, Elaine and Stephen, you have not only made Jasper and Jolie happy but all of us too in making the dream come true for them to be in a home TOGETHER!

If you can give a loving forever home to one of our dogs or even two, please visit our adoption gallery on the website to learn more and email us with any interest at [email protected] and an application form will be sent.

We have shared this happy boy many times on our social media pages, but we're hoping this will be his LUCKY year and he will find a forever home.

Lucky is a 10-year-old Singapore Special who is absolutely divine. He is a happy-go-lucky guy, which is why it was very easy to name him!

Lucky spent most of his life living on a farm but sadly the farm had to close down, which is why he is now with us at the shelter. He loves all of the attention he gets from humans, but also enjoys hanging out with other dogs too. So we think Lucky would get along with another pet in the household.

Lucky always greets you with a big smile and a wiggly tail. He is a lovebug who loves nothing more than to be wrapped up in affection and hand fed treats. He loves to go for walks, so a family who can take him on adventures with them would be best for him.

Not one person has stepped forward for Lucky - and we have no idea why. This boy is affectionate, friendly and charismatic. He is also SO handsome!

If you think you can offer Lucky the forever home he has been waiting for, please send an email to [email protected]. In your email please tell us about yourself, your home and family and whether you have owned any pets in the past. We do not reply to emails that give us little information, so please tell us as much about yourself as possible and then our rehoming team may get in touch with you.

Read more about Lucky, including his HDB status, on our website: https://www.oscas.sg/adoption-gallery

Merry Christmas to all of our supporters, volunteers and friends 🎄

Thank you for helping us in 2023. All of your donations enable us to continue to support the dogs we have in our care, as well as new ones that need help. Without you, we couldn’t do what we do!

Here’s hoping that in 2024 we see lots of familiar faces find new homes, like adorable Kino here. Merry Christmas ❤️

24/12/2023

This Christmas when spending time with your family, why not take the time to discuss whether your home is ready to adopt a dog?

When people ask us what they need to do when they want to adopt a dog, we say "talk to your entire household." Sit down with your parents, grandparents, spouse, siblings, children - whoever happens to live with you - and talk to them about whether they are willing to give a dog a happy home.

This might sound annoying, but its a great way to get the whole family on board and ensure that the dog has a happy, loving home from day one. It also reduces the likelihood of a dog being returned or abandoned if the whole family is in agreement.

So if you are thinking of adopting a furry friend in 2024 - start preparing now! Use Christmas as a chance to talk to your family about the benefits of having a pet and how you can achieve it together.

By doing this, you'll give us a Christmas miracle - a home for the 60+ dogs that we currently have at the shelter. They have been waiting so long for a loving home, so please consider adoption as a New Year's Resolution!

Introducing CARAMEL who arrived at the shelter in August this year after she was rescued from a home due to neglect. Now we are in search of a home where she can get the attention she craves!

Caramel is estimated to be around 7 years old and gets very excited when she sees people, seeking their attention for interaction and love.

A super bubbly and friendly girl who would fill a home with her happy, enthusiastic spirit and just be content to hang out with humans. She should also be fine with other friendly pets as we have not seen any signs of reaction.

We are not sure how exposed she was to walking outdoors in her initial home (which was not found through us) however when she arrived at the shelter, she was easy to harness and walk outside. She is always excited to get out for a walk, but she does show signs of anxiousness now and again.

But we believe when she has formed a bond with her new family she would feel comforted and reassured to enjoy her walks more at ease.

Small in stature for a Singapore Special means Caramel is also HDB approved.

If you think you would be a good match for sweet Caramel please email us at [email protected] to tell us more and we will send out the application form and process.

Meet Bobby a sweet, very friendly 11-year-old Singapore Special who has lived in a home since a puppy - but was given up last October 2022 as they could no longer care for her. She sadly hasn’t had much interest despite her very friendly and happy soul.

She gets along well with other dogs and people and having lived her whole life in a home, would settle easily into a new home. She enjoys getting out for walks and spending time with our volunteers.

Bobby does have a hind leg issue and walks with a limp. This comes from when she was a puppy, when she broke her leg in a factory. It's an old injury, she has lived with her whole life and while she loves to go for walks, we need to make sure she doesn't walk long distances or is forced to exercise in a way that will exacerbate the injury.

She was taken to see a specialist, Dr Maguire (specialist at Beecroft Hospital) in April which we can share more details for interested adopters related to her right hip dysplasia issue (right hip joint) with the main issue luxation of the patella which requires care.

If you would like to find out more about Bobby, please email [email protected] and tell us about yourself. Our rehoming team will write back to you with an adoption screening form.

08/10/2023

In September 2022, we received a call to help a dog by the side of the road. This dog was unable to walk and was whining in pain.

We took him in and named him Ranger. Over the last 12 months, we have taken him to countless specialist appointments to treat him for a myriad of health problems.

First we investigated why he couldn’t walk or get up. We found out that he had spinal issues and severe arthritis, which he had been living with in agony on the street. We managed this with pain medication and rehabilitation - and thankfully now this big guy is able to walk and move around.

We then found out that Ranger had a severe case of Babesiosis, which is a disease transferred via ticks. Though we have treated it, Ranger’s Babesia has ravaged his body and is something he will live with forever (we will expand on later in this post).

Whilst treating Ranger for these issues, it was discovered he had a growth on his spleen and that it was unreasonably large. He also had skin cancers on his legs and needed a biopsy taken from his liver, where there is a suspected mass. The vets were able to remove his spleen, remove the skin cancers and successfully get the biopsy.

Ranger pulled through this surgery, which was amazing as spleen surgery is intricate and full of risks. But sadly, a week later, Ranger’s body crashed and he needed an urgent blood transfusion.

At first it was thought to be because of the surgery, but then it was discovered Ranger was incredibly anaemic. It was also suspected to be an autoimmune disease, but since then through extensive testing we have been informed that it’s the Babesia that is the culprit.

This tick-borne disease has led to Ranger needing two blood transfusions and extensive around-the-clock veterinary care. It is a particularly chronic case of tick fever, one that is ravaging his red blood cells and making him anaemic and terribly sick.

We want this amazing, resilient boy to have a third chance at life - can you help us? Ranger is currently stable with a red blood cell count around 28%. He is on a cocktail of medication to heal his immune system and get him back into a safe zone - but this is going to take time and money. The fact he no longer has a spleen also makes this process difficult, as the spleen acts as an immune system regulator.

Ranger has come this far, and his vet bills right now are in excess of $25,000. We have a fundraiser set up where every donation we receive will be matched 1-1 by the TOTE Board. Can you please help us to raise funds to continue paying for Ranger’s treatment and recovery?

This boy has WOWED us with his perseverance - and something tells us he is not giving up. We just need to give him the treatment he needs, and this happy, friendly boy will be back on his feet.

Please help us spread the word about Ranger and raise funds for his recovery. You can donate to the 1-1 campaign here: https://give.asia/campaign/help-the-dogs-at-oscas-dollar-for-dollar-matching-grant

At 12 years old Senior boy Goo Goo finally finds a home!

It took some time for many of our volunteers to warm up to Goo Goo as he had a bit of a bad rep, but he always had his champions in long time volunteer Dai Ling who was involved in his rescue and helped him from the beginning to walk on leash. This allowed other volunteers to also walk him, where he became a favourite of many as he was always relaxed, greeted other dogs nicely and went at a leisurely pace.

Then along came volunteer Colette who built a connection with Goo Goo and now they live together with a cat too! She shares more about her adoption journey …

“As a volunteer at OSCAS, I was introduced to Goo Goo in 2020. Everyone at the shelter was wary and hesitant to approach him due to his nature and food aggression.

“Seeing Goo Goo only being walked by a selected few at the shelter, I wanted to get to know him better. When I asked about walking Goo Goo to one of the volunteers, they said, ‘Colette he is just a big baby!’ From there I plucked up the courage to walk him and started spending time with him.

“I had an instant attraction to Goo Goo. He would be eager to go out for walks, standing by the gate, waiting for his harness to be put on. When I would spend time with him, sitting in his kennel, he would sit next to me and lay on the floor, placing his head on my knee and putting his front paw on my legs.

“While I was at OSCAS my focus was to spend time with Goo Goo so that we could both get to know each other better.

“Moving forward 3 years later and once personal circumstances allowed, I decided to start a homestay. At this time, I already had a cat and was a little wary on how Goo Goo would react being in the same space. He was curious about my cat but wasn’t fussed. It must have been the energy my cat was sending off exerting an attitude of ‘I’m the boss here’. They both live happily together and love sitting underneath the aircon side by side.

“Goo Goo brings in his own personality, character, and energy into the home. As a senior dog (12 years old at time of writing this) he still has a spark and has adapted well into his new family life. He loves his food, pulling out the fluff from what we thought would be his bed, spending time sitting in the sun and meeting new doggie friends. He will also let you know when you are taking too long to prepare his food! “

Thank you, Colette, Rob and Socks, for welcoming Goo Goo into your home where he can get the attention he needs as a senior dog and finally enjoy the comforts of a home!

Our Story

Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter Ltd (OSCAS) is a registered charity devoted to caring for a hundred rescued strays. These dogs are rescued from industrial estates, parks and urbanisation of jungles to save them from being culled by the local authorities. These 'Singapore Specials' call OSCAS their home as they wait for their right families to come along. Stray rescue in Singapore is a long tiring journey and a never-ending issue.
