Overgrown nails can lead to alot of problem in the long run. For example, mobility issues, pain, and infection. When the nails are overgrown, your pet will have difficulties in walking. And in the long run, it will affect their posture or even spinal. If those overgrown nail curl towards their toe, it can pierce in and cause injuries too.

If your pet is overweight, it will caused them more discomfort. The pressure exerted to their legs, causing more pain and can result in making them to walk even lesser. Which mean lesser exercise to burn the fats. When they are obese, more health issue will start to surface eventually.

If they are senior, they will have difficulties in gripping and they will start to walk lesser too. Their muscle ard the leg will start to deteriorate, eventually they will not be able to walk.

The photo showcased a severely overweight dog with super long nail till some curl upwards. Can you imagine how long they had to suffered silently with it?

Do check their nail often and get it trim regularly.

Beak Shaping and Polishing at Takara Pets

Sometime when the mandible gets abit overgrown, it will chip off like the macaw shown in the "beak shaping" photo. The uneven can further cause uncomfort for them. And of course......if you wanna feel hows heaven is like, just let them bite you with it 😂

As for the beak polishing, this is just additional service to make it looked more handsome/ pretty.

When do parrot need grooming? Should you groom it by yourself or seek a professional help?

Usually a healthy parrot will be able to groom themselves well. Their beak and nail will wear down from grinding food, rubbing on rough surface, chewing toy and more.

We have came across with owners thinking that the sharpness from their beak is considered long and overgrown. That is incorrect to an extend. Usually if the beak can looked sharp, it mean the bird are doing great in maintaining it. They need the sharpness to forage food and for better griping. (and biting the owners 😆) . They only need to be groom when its overgrown that caused by deformed, trauma, nutrition, certain health issue like liver that can cause it to grow fast and some other factor.

How do we know whether the beak is overgrown?

Listing some examples:

- when they had difficulties opening food like sunflower seeds or shell food.
- when their mouth cant seems to close properly.
- when they got injuries on their beak before
- young parrots especially lovebird, they are the majority for overgrown cases.

If you still unsure, ask your vet or groomer or try google some photos of your parrot breed to compare.

As for their nails, how do we know when should it be trimmed:

- When they can't stand properly on flat surfaces. Their toes will be lifted quite high up by the nail.
- When they cant grip the perch properly. For example, when given a suitable diameter perch for their feet, their nails from the front and back can touch each other.
- When their nails keep caught up with their toys or cage grills easily. It can be really dangerous if the nails get stuck on things. They will injured themselves and can be life threatening.
- When the nails start to curl towards to the toe.

Should you groom it by yourself or get a professional help?

If your feather kids are very comfortable with you doing simple filing to their beak or nail, that is very very good. However, not many birds can be so obedient. Sometime the bond with your bird can break very easily. Parrot are very good in remembering stress/ trauma. They might even marked you for life. See you like see ghost. Unless you are very experienced to gain back the trust with your bird. Hence, if you have no confidence in doing, please find a reputable vet or groomer to assist you. As for owner grooming it yourself, will still recommend you to check with the vet or groomer once awhile on whether is there any overgrown.

Some overgrown will need at least few session to cure. Deformed or trauma cases usually will take more sessions or will be a lifetime treatment. These beaks n nails can grow really fast in 1 to 2 weeks. So do check them regularly.

Hope this post will help owners to give a better quality of life for your feather kids

Beak Trauma can come in many forms. Beak injuries from fractures, punctures, breakage or crushing. If the bird survive from it, alot of case, the beak will be permanently deformed and some will need regularly grooming to make sure they can eat well.
Below is an example of Beak Trauma cause by bigger parrot biting off the lovebird's lower mandible. He was really lucky that he is able to recover. The wonder of nature ❤️. However, the breakage had cause his beak to go out of shape permanently and will require the help of human. His overgrown are one good example that it had eventually pierce into his skin.
Owner please remember to check your feather kids beak regular. Overgrown not only caused by trauma, it can also be genetic, health issue or other factors. If you notice any different, please contact your avian vet or groomer for more advice.
