It is such a privilege when you earn the trust of an animal, to be his favorite & trusted human in times of uncertainty, and to experience the joy of that happiness when you return home. Thank you, Archie for spending the last few weeks with us and livening up our household. Everyone, except .ralph_thegolden will miss you. We wish you the very best for your trial homestay. We have no doubt they will decide to keep you. So for now, we’ll just enjoy your company for the next 2 days.

Not the prettiest of pictures but it was the only one I got from our vet visit yesterday which was so incredibly successful that I need to have a post about it. In all honesty, we didn’t really get to do much happy vet visits as we would have liked but our training in all other areas have paid off. Doing behaviors he likes in a variety of places have allowed him to function in the vet clinic in our visit yesterday. I was not expecting that he would be able to respond to cues to do his tricks in the vet room because his anxiety level is usually though the roof and he would not be able to eat most of the times, let alone respond to any cues. However yesterday he exceeded all expectations. Not only did he manage to EAT in the clinic, he responded to cues for tricks and we even got his vaccination done swiftly, in a low stress way with his full involvement in the process. Such a trooper! He’s come such a long way from that single traumatic vet incident 2 years back and I honestly could not be prouder. Thank you Dr Gracia from for your patience and allowing us time to do some practice before the actual jab. Thanks also to .monaco.torelli for inspiring so much of the training that we do to prepare for vet visits and other cooperative care. Wish I caught it on video because it was such an enjoyable session but my hands were full and we were very focused on what we needed to do. Looking forward to better and better visits in the future.

Personally I find a distance of at least 3m (10ft) works best for most dogs. Not sure what other trainers think. Feel free to comment. This distance can also potentially prevent injuries in cases where an unknown dog might suddenly lunge at you and your dog (since most leashes are around 2m or 6ft). In such a scenario, having kept that distance in the first place would have kept you and your dog safe from physical injuries, even though emotionally some damage has been done.

Not dog training, but this is so relevant to behavior. Pain and discomfort manifests in behavior. If your dog has sustained any injury, do bear in mind the average time it takes to heal as shared by the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians. Ensure you allow your pups plenty of time to rest and recover.

This video looks like just dogs doing nothing. But the dogs are actually learning that they can still function normally when there are other dogs are walking around in the environment.

Going to bed or mat is such an important foundation behavior and there are so many uses for it. If you don’t want your dog jumping on guests or jumping up at the dining table, this is a great alternative behavior to teach. Remember to ask yourself, what do you want your dog TO DO instead?

Looking forward to this. See you all tomorrow!

Recent stories of pets being sold or abandoned for behavioural reasons are puzzling to anyone who understands animal behaviour, says SPCA’s Jaipal Singh Gill.

A short lesson on canine body language: a wagging tail does not mean the dog is happy. The golden in this video has a tense body and his ears are pulled back. His mouth is also closed as the other dog approaches him. Even though his tail is wagging, the carriage is high and is not a relaxed flowy wag. He is nervous and is communicating with the approaching dog. You see later that the black dog offered a head turn and a step back and eventually turned away from the golden’s face, acknowledging the golden’s communication for the need for space.

If everyone could do this, it would make it a lot more pleasant for many dogs and their owners. The number of times I have to tell people to give us space on a daily basis is no joke and very telling of the level of awareness. Why do I have to speak out to ask NOT TO BE HARASSED? Yes, it is harassment when I have to tell you not to come up to our faces. And you will not believe how unkind people can be, passing judgement on your choice not to allow interactions. It’s just uncalled for and very unkind. We need to do better.

Bedtime transitions can be hard. .ralph_thegolden chose to offer taking a breath to calm himself down.

We recommend that you avoid dog on leash greetings. If an unexpected encounter occurs, use these tips to keep the meeting brief and safe.
