ISTVS COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM

ISTVS Year Four veterinary students recently undertook a commendable community outreach program, focusing on assisting camel herders in Sheikh, Somaliland. Given the crucial role camels play in sustaining livelihoods within the region, the initiative aimed to diagnose and confirm diseases prevalent among camel herds through both field examinations and laboratory analyses.

These outreach endeavors not only provided invaluable hands-on experience for ISTVS students in field epidemiology, disease surveillance, and community engagement but also made significant strides in enhancing animal health and welfare within Somali's pastoral communities. Moreover, such initiatives serve as a platform for fostering collaboration among academia, the Ministry of Livestock, and local communities, thereby addressing the health needs of camel herds and promoting sustainable livestock production systems.

ISTVS veterinary students had the incredible opportunity to visit local veterinary drug sellers. It was an eye-opening experience to learn about the different medications and supplies that play a vital role in animal care. However, a lack of expertise and knowledge in the majority of the suppliers was encountered. This serves as a reminder of the crucial role qualified professionals play in the field of veterinary medicine. ISTVS is determined to continue its education and advocate for the highest standards of care for our Livestock.

Hands-on Training in Anatomy, Body Organs, and Systems at ISTVS
Embracing a hands-on approach to learning, ISTVS places a strong emphasis on practical training. Dr. Hibo Hassan, the lecturer of Anatomy and Physiology at ISTVS, conducting an interactive session for Community Animal Health Workers. The primary learning objectives were to impart a fundamental practical understanding of normal body anatomy, crucial body organs, various body systems, and their respective functions and interconnections, alongside gaining insights into the size and appearance of these elements in healthy animals.
During the training, participants engaged in practical exercises, which involved making incisions to observe different organs. This hands-on experience allowed them to visualize the normal appearance, color, and consistency of various tissues, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology in live animals.

Practical Training in Sample Collection and Handling.

Field-based training in sample collection and transportation to the laboratory played a pivotal role in the education of Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs). This hands-on experience equipped trainees with invaluable skills in various tasks, including animal restraint, sample collection (comprising blood, nasal swabs, urine, and f***s), and the precise labeling, packaging, and shipment of samples to the laboratories.

Proper animal restraint during sample collection was of paramount importance. One individual would collect samples while another expertly ensured the animal remained in the appropriate position, often without the need for additional assistance. To maintain the integrity of each sample, they were meticulously labeled with essential information, including the date of collection, a unique sample number, and the specific type of sample obtained.

Before embarking on their journey to the laboratory, each labeled sample found its place in authorized primary and secondary containers. These containers were thoughtfully marked with erasable ink to guarantee the samples' arrival in impeccable condition. When all was said and done, the samples were skillfully packaged and promptly dispatched to their designated laboratory.

These training exercises were truly exceptional, affording trainees the unique opportunity to determine blood groups by conducting tests on the samples collected in the field.

ISTVS Acts on Urgent Call for Animal Health and Wound Care in Sheikh District.
Upon hearing a pastoralist's urgent call from a rural vicinity about unidentified animal disease symptoms and wound management needs, the IGAD Sheikh Technical Veterinary School (ISTVS) Responded to this heartfelt request promptly into action. With a rich history of dedication to community service, ISTVS once again showcased its unwavering commitment.
A dedicated team comprising ISTVS veterinary clinical staff and passionate trainees of community animal health workers (CAHWs) immediately mobilized to embark on their mission. Their trip to the affected area was filled with anticipation and determination to provide essential veterinary care to animals in need.
Reaching the site, the magnitude of the challenges pastoralists faced became evident to the team. They encountered animals with minor injuries, which, if left unattended, could worsen, as well as severe wounds that demanded immediate care. It was clear that the pastoralist's concerns were far from overstated.
One of the most commendable sides of this fieldwork was the involvement of ISTVS trainees (CAHWs). As potential community animal health workers, these trainees represent the future bridge between veterinary expertise and the grassroots level. Under the supervision of the experienced ISTVS clinical staff, these trainees were provided with invaluable hands-on experience to enhance the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of CAHWs to affectively address animal health issues, provide basic veterinary care and promote responsible animal treatment practices. And ensuring they are well-prepared to continue this legacy of service.
ISTVS's recent outreach in Sheikh district underscores its unwavering resolve to promote animal welfare throughout the region. By promptly addressing the pastoralist's concerns and empowering the community with knowledge, ISTVS remains at the forefront of advocating for the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals.

Exciting Developments in Dryland Agriculture at IGAD STVS!
Over the 3rd and 4th of October, the passionate students from our Dryland Agriculture program were busy with their hands in the soil, bringing the teachings from the classroom into the real world. On the demonstration farm of the institute, they embarked on the journey of transplanting an array of cash crops.
🌿 From the Greenhouse to the Field: These crops weren't just any crops. They started their life in our greenhouse, carefully nurtured in seed beds, protected, and prepared for their eventual move to the broader field. The transition from the controlled environment of a greenhouse to the open field is a significant step, and our students handled it with utmost dedication and care.
🥬 The Line-Up: And what a variety of crops it was! From the ever-nutritious cabbage and lettuce to the tomatoes and the beetroot. A true testament to the versatility and potential of dryland agriculture.
📚 Guided by the Best: A big shoutout to the dedicated lecturers of IGAD STVS who provided their invaluable guidance every step of the way. It's this synergy of eager students and experienced teachers such as Mohamed Abdirahman that ensures these crops are given the best chance to thrive.
This endeavor not only provides hands-on experience for our students but also emphasizes the institute’s commitment to exploring the extensive possibilities of dryland agriculture in IGAD region.
Join us in celebrating these accomplishments, and let’s look forward to a bountiful harvest season! 🌾🍅🥬🎉
For more updates, stay tuned and keep supporting the incredible work being done at IGAD STVS.

IGAD-STVS 2023 Graduation Bachelor of Science in Dryland Economics and Agroecosystem Management accredited by the University of Nairobi.
A total of 19 students graduated from the dryland agriculture program (accredited by the University of Nairobi) on the 22nd of September 2023. A total of 10 and 9 students pursued extension and economic specializations respectively.
The performance was outstanding with 4 students graduating with first-class honors, 10 with second-class upper-division honors, and 5 with second-class lower-division honors. The performance does demonstrate that academic excellence is achievable in the heart of pastoralist rural environment if the correct “ingredients” go into the delivery of the targeted programs that are pertinent to the development of the Arid and Semi-Arid lands. ISTVS has provided a platform in the region that has enabled the youth enrolled from across the region to attain their full academic potential and compete favorably with their peers in the rest of the IGAD region.
Without quality education communities in cross border areas will never be integrated into national economies and thus the feeling or perception of marginalization will persist building into the "need to migrate or be violent".
We congratulate the fresh graduates! The sky is the limit as various job opportunities and further training are on offer.
The benefits of this can also be looked at in a wider context in terms of security and containment of illegal migration. If we can build on the progress made so far.
