Every Sunday in March 2024, K9Phuket will be offering dog training classes in a group setting.

Whether you:
- currently have a dog enrolled in private training with me
- have already completed the course or

The purpose of this trial run is to:
- gauge public interest in regular group classes

Dog Training is not an off-the-shelf course. Inviting a dog trainer into your life is like trusting a counselor with your deepest thoughts and fears about your relationship with your dog.

You don't train your dog to massage your ego. Dog training is very much about building a 2 way communication channel between you and your dog. Your dog trainer helps you understand your dog's behaviour, its body language and its emotional and physiological needs.

1. PUPPY TRAINING

This course is suitable for puppies 6 months of age or younger.

What a puppy experiences during its critical learning period forms the blueprint for the rest of its life, so the more healthy and safe exposure your young puppy has with worldly stimulus, the more confident they will grow up to be.

Also, a puppy trained early doesn't pick up on bad habits and learns to accept your guidance and instructions early, which carries over to when they are a full grown 40kg muscular adult dog!

2. OBEDIENCE TRAINING

All dogs benefit from obedience training, whether they are large, small, fearful, aggressive, impulsive, or energetic.

1 course of 10 sessions can reliably address 1 issue.

Core methodology: repetition.

You tell me the behaviour you would like to address, and we train the dog to respond with a more suitable action than barking, lunging, growling or whatever else they currently choose to do.

3. THE OUT & ABOUT DOG

For owners who would like to take their dogs out with them to cafes, parks, beaches or anywhere else.

Obedience training is a requirement before dogs can be taken out into the real world confidently and safely.

Focus: riding safely in cars, holding commands for longer durations, calmness and indifference to people, vehicles, children and other animals, handler awareness and confidence.

4. PACK TRAINING

Suitable for people who have more than one dog, and require training to manage the sometimes chaotic life of living with several dogs.

Focus: as per individual goals.
Including but not limited to walking multiple dogs simultaneously, preventing fights over treats and toys, etc.

5. BUNDLE

For those interested in more than one course, we can discuss your goals and combine courses to achieve desired results.

Are you meeting your dog's basic requirements?

For a truly fulfilling life, a dog needs more than food and love.

1. Exercise:

If your dog doesn't get enough exercise, it will find other ways to release its energy, often through digging, barking, chewing on random things and other undesirable behaviour.

If a dog has the appropriate amount of structured walks, it burns enough energy and also receives mental stimulation.

If we had to rely on physical exercise only, we probably wouldn't be able to keep up with their exercise needs. 😅

2. Mental stimulation:

Dogs can be taught to think about the small decisions they make.

The best stimulations are the ones they experience with you through training.

3. Pack Structure:

Dogs in nature would rely on a pack leader. They very much live in a social hierarchy with the strongest and fittest dog taking charge to protect all members of the pack. Other dogs rely on this pack leader for their survival and trust him because they know he or she can keep them safe.

As the human in charge of your dog - in your house or public places where you take your dog - you want to show your dog they can trust you, and that they don't need to chase bikes, bark at delivery men, protect you from other people who may approach you or anything else they may perceive as a threat.

A dog is reactive when it feels like it is in charge of its own safety.

4. Rules and Order:

As much as we want to believe that we should just let a dog be a dog, it just isn't practical in so many scenarios.

It will p*e and poo anywhere if not toilet trained or potty trained.

It will sn**ch a fun looking toy from your young child's hand, causing tears and chaos if not taught impulse control.

It will jump to greet your elderly and frail parents or grandparents out of sheer naivety, potentially causing injury.

It will pull you on to on-coming traffic simply because it saw a tennis ball on the opposite side of the street.

Whether you have a small dog or large dog, excited dog, reactive dog, aggressive dog or nervous dog, obedience training helps put your dog in a calm state of mind, so you can have fun with your dog, but also switch off if needed

It might sound odd to say a dog trainer won’t train your dog but it’s true. The only person who can do that is you.

You are the person your dog spends the vast majority of their time with. You are the person they have most interaction with. Who sets the boundaries, who has the opportunity to consistently reinforce behaviours, who chooses the environments your dog is exposed to, who has control over your dog's day to day life & experiences.

When you go to a weekly training class or have a weekly session your trainer isn’t really teaching your dog….they are teaching 𝘺𝘰𝘶 how to teach your dog. And your success will be determined by whether you take what you learn and implement it on a daily basis. Because even if you see your trainer or attend your class religiously every single week, week in week out, that still amounts to a tiny proportion of your dog's life ( just 0.6% of their week if the training session lasts 1 hour).

Your trainer's job is to give you the understanding, skills and confidence that will allow you to effectively teach your dog and to support and guide you through the process.

Your job is to put what you learn into practice.

Little Rocky, although a timid puppy, learnt very quickly to heel, sit and drop on command. It is a myth that little dogs are harmless, and require no training. Although their threats and bites aren't vicious, their loud barking is often a result of anxiety in unfamiliar situations. Training them helps you establish a language of communication with them, where they learn to trust you and follow your guidance.

Teaching a bed-stay is useful when you have guests over or when there is a lot of activity happening in the house that does not require your dog's involvement. They don't need to be stressed out by the work-men going in and out of your house, or barking at the mail-man, or jumping on guests. For those times, ask them to go to their beds and stay there calmly until invited.
