My boss, Mr. Miles, is an amazing architect but a thorn in my side. If I had known that being his assistant meant doing everything except architecture—like fetching his coffee from a café across town because he "doesn't like the local one," returning unwanted gifts to the store, or even standing in for him at a friend's funeral (after which I decided I'd quit)—I'd never have taken the job.

But yesterday, while presenting his new project, Mr. Miles called me out of the blue and said, "I need you to go to my daughter's school and pick her up NOW. She has a stomachache. Go straight home and sit with her. But don't go to the basement...it’s, uh, under repair."

I went to school, picked up Annabel—who's the cutest creature ever, unlike her dad—and brought her home. She was upset, clutching her stomach, and started whining:

Her: "I need Rodger."
Me: "Who's Rodger, hon?"
Her: "My little brother. But this morning, Dad left him in the basement."

MY 18-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER INTRODUCED HER NEW 55-YEAR-OLD BOYFRIEND — I WAS TRYING TO UNDERSTAND UNTIL AN ANGRY WOMAN BURST IN.

My newly 18-year-old daughter left me at a loss for words by saying she's going to marry a 55-YEAR-OLD MAN! To say I was floored would be putting it mildly. I rushed to convince her not to do it:

Just hours before my wedding, I stepped outside to grab my bouquet from the delivery man. That's when I saw her — an elderly woman dressed in rags, standing on the path near my house.
