Our sweet Grandma Thong Dee is out and about, exploring and foraging. She spent the morning searching for freshly fallen figs and munching on fresh grass shoots in the field, while her caretaker, Por Kham, followed closely behind, chopping up yummy shrubs and leaves for her to enjoy. ☺️
It’s been a challenging time for precious Thong Dee, and we’ve been working around the clock to ensure her comfort and keep her health stable during these tough winter months. Our Founder, Burm, has been camping out by her shelter each night for the last five weeks, during the coldest period, to make sure Thong Dee stays stable through the night. He kept her warm and cozy with a fire and heat lamp system, always ready to call on the caretakers if she struggled to rise. It’s been concerning that she has been reluctant to lie down during the freezing nights, knowing her old bones may not allow her to rise again, which leaves her even more tired and sore. 🥶
Now, as we near the end of winter, there’s a sense of relief that it’s almost over, though it’s been a rough stretch. 🙏🏻
The days are very hot and dry, while the nights remain cool. Her skin is dry and tears easily when she is feeling tired and leans on her shelter or against trees, but we’re doing everything we can to support her. 🌞
It’s hard getting old. 🥹
Happy Monday, BEES Friends! 🙏🏻🌿🐘
Here’s a picture of Thong Dee this morning, enjoying a dust bath. 😍

🌿🐘 After spending many hours exploring and foraging in the forest, fields, and along the stream, Mae Kam and Mae Dok know when it’s time to head back to their night shelters. 🌿🐘
Our elephants spend each day under the watchful eyes of their loving guardians, their caretakers. These incredible caretakers dedicate their lives to ensuring the elephants live in peace and comfort in their retirement. 💫
From the moment the sun rises until nightfall, the caretakers are there, tending to the elephants’ every need—whether it’s safely guiding them to foraging sites, ensuring their safety from dangers in the field, or addressing any ailments they may encounter. When an elephant falls ill, the caretaker and sanctuary staff come together to provide round-the-clock care, ensuring their comfort and speedy recovery. ✨☀️🌛🏝️🌴
Two to three times a week, we offer full day Observation Walks, where guests are guided by amazing local guides through the forest, fields, and streams. The highlight is observing the elephants as they go about their day and witnessing the incredible relationships between the elephants and their caretakers. 😍🐘🌿
By combining observation, education, community, cultural immersion, and animal welfare, we create a truly memorable experience. 🛑✋📚🌿🐘🐈🐕🐾
It’s true eco-tourism. The best part is that this form of tourism gives back—allowing elephants to live a more natural life, educating on the environment, planting trees, helping in the area of animal welfare, while also providing employment and benefits to locals and the community.

🌞Today was HOT during the day, the nights are still cool.
Mae Kam and Mae Dok took a lovely stroll, quite far today and decided to take a long dip in the river. 🏝️
They had a wonderful time rolling all around, throwing water with their trunks. Mae Kam looks like she has a huge grin on her face. 😁
It’s so lovely to see the girls enjoying a splash. ❤️
Our beautiful Mae Kam has been receiving daily treatment this week after she got an ouchy 🥴 on her private part, this can occur after they scratch a little too hard or an insect stings them leading to inflammation and itching.
Thankfully, she is responding well to treatments and look how happy she looks today 😍
Happy Friday BEES Friends 🙏🏻🌿🐘

A very big Thank you to Dr. Yew and the dedicated team from the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre Hospital for their generous donation of vitamins, ointments, special food pellets, and medicines for our elephants this weekend. The incredible team travels across the country bi-annually for these particular elephant checks. They provide outreach, and support to elephants in need nationwide. ❤️🐘
We truly appreciate all your hard work and dedication. 🙏🏻🌿🐘

Our precious Grandma Thong Dee is really feeling the cold. Each night during the cold season our staff work in rotation to build a warm bonfire 🔥 by her shelter, so she can keep warm and cozy on these very cold wintery nights 🥶 it was 13’C Overnight here.
Many of you will ask, does she have a winter jacket? We have offered her many jackets, but she mostly keeps warm by destroying them. 🤭
Brrrrrrrrrr Trumpets and Rumbles from a chilly Maechaem.

Love is 💝 A beautiful and tender moment between retired elephants Mae Kam and Mae Dok.
It is so beautiful to watch elephants interact with each other and the environment around them. Their trunks intertwining is a form of tactile communication, allowing them to offer comfort and reassurance to one another after momentarily getting separated while foraging in the forest🌿🩷🐘

A Sanctuary For Elephants and A Small Animal Rescue
A safe natural home for rescued and retired elephants. NO RIDES, NO TRICKS - Just Elephants Being Elephants.
BEES was established to provide a place of rest/care under contract with the hopes of permanent retirement and to rescue and provide a forever home to elephants and animals in need.
Thailand has over 4000 Captive Elephants, many of which are working as entertainers and trekking elephants being ridden and exploited because their mahouts and owners rely on the income.
Help us lead by example, through education and providing alternative solutions that meet the needs of the elephants and the people that work with them. Giving the elephants a better life and ensuring the people that rely on the elephants for income can still provide for their families needs.
