Circus elephant Viola recently made her escape from the Jordan World Circus in Butte Montana. This was not Viola's first time to make a run for it. Twice before she attempted to get away from her life of servitude and harsh training that she has endured for decades. She was born in Asia in the 1960s, her estimated year of birth is 1966. The especially tragic part of this story is that at approximately 58 years old, Viola is still forced to perform tricks in a circus. Carson & Barnes Circus, equally guilty of harsh training, provides the elephants to the Jordan World Circus.
In the U.S., there are currently eight states and over 150 localities (cities, towns, and counties) in 37 states that have passed various restrictions or bans involving the use of wild animals in circuses. It's time for all circuses to follow Ringling Brothers lead and retire their embattled elephants, and all of their animals, and become human-powered circuses as a growing number of circuses around the world have done.
