Over the last couple of months we had been advising Aysha & Mark about the process, and journey, for them to bring their Leonberger, Poppy, over to the TRNC.
Each pet (and owner !) has their own particular needs, requirements, preferences and fears which we always take into account when planning for a pet to travel.
Poppy is, for such a large breed dog, quite old at over 7 years. She weighs more than 70kg and is also nearly blind so her needs were quite complex. After lots of discussions, during her prep time, we all thought it would be best for Poppy to travel with her family overland. Although we have flown Leonbergers in before - we felt that for Poppy it would have been too stressful.
Even the families UK vet was in touch with us to ensure that she was doing everything according to the rules.
This week we received the following update from Aysha...
"Hi Kim,
Have been meaning to email you amongst everything else to say thank you for all of you help and let you know that we arrived safely and Poppy made it ( just about).
I think any longer and we would have had problems. We did it in 8 days and we came via…. France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and got the ferry from Tasucu.
It all went really well actually and we are still picking ourselves that there were no problems.
At the border at Turkey we showed the papers but they had no idea what they were supposed to be looking for and to be honest seeing such a big dog was a novelty and distracted them somewhat .. then no issues in Girne… the vet came out pretty quickly ( the only issue we had was it was quite warm for Poppy and she fell down the stairs 😩😩as she’s quite blind).
She is loving it though now… taken about a week for her stomach to adjust and for her to settle and she seems to have a new lease of life ….
Thanks again Kim for all of your help. Will def recommend you guys."
Happy TRNC Days Poppy x
