šŸ¤ÆAggression Ladder

šŸ§There is so much to behaviour than meets the eye. I often hear clients distressed, saying that their dog has never behaved this way and donā€™t understand where itā€™s come from and that heā€™s normally so good. Obviously there are events that trigger behaviours but they donā€™t just come from nowhere, and can be prevented if you know what youā€™re looking at and how to interpret it.

šŸ™ˆWhen a dog behaves in a way that a human being finds inappropriate or rude, we forget that dogs are not human. They behave naturally as they do for their species and we as humans have unrealistic expectations on our dogs. We both ā€˜speakā€™ different languages. We mainly use vocalisation and dogs mainly use body language.

šŸŽ¢The ladder of aggression is what can help you understand how a dog can escalate from what seems like a normal relaxed dog to all of a sudden barking, growling, being reactive and biting.

šŸ„ŗYou may first notice your dog sending something called calming signals. This is not only to help them stay calm but to indicate to you that the dog is not a threat and the messages should calm down a situation the dog is not ok with. This can be in the form of lip licking following a sneeze, excessive blinking, yawning, head turns to avoid. These behaviours will appear out of context and are to ideally defuse a tense situation.

šŸ–If the messages the dog is sending are being ignored the next thing you may see are displacement behaviours. This is when the dog redirects their attention to something else so the donā€™t have to deal with the scary thing or situation as well as it can be a form of self soothing behaviour that can give the dog a moment of S can be random ge***al checks, eating grass, randomly scratching or over sniffing in the environment etc... The dog is now exhibiting stress signals.

šŸ˜³The dog may now move to more intense behaviours if he/ she has not shut down and gone into a learnt state of helplessness. You may see your dog is barking and their breathing has rapidly increased. He ideally is trying to deter the threat. You may even notice the dog he dips his head down, snarling with excessive lip licking. At this stage the tongue will be going right over the nose with every lick. The dog may be bearing teeth and growling. In between these behaviours you may still notice more calming signals.

šŸ˜¤If the dog gets to the stage where his behaviour is highly reactive and he is lunging out, barking and growling, teeth bearing, snarling and or quite still in between while exhibiting these behaviours, then this is a dog who is completely over threshold and not coping. Itā€™s his last resort before he follows with a bite. His body is in overdrive and he is in fight mode as his other behaviours of freeze, fidget and flight did not work. He is in SURVIVAL mode and the next step is to bite to protect/ defend himself/ herself.

āœŒļøBehaviours can escalate in readily quickly. Within a blink of an eye your dog can go from being ok to nervous to flight or fight. Identifying body language, facial expressions and signals is an incredibly important step in PREVENTING unwanted behaviours and making your dog feel safe.

Have you noticed that your cat has a saggy belly? Kitty hasn't eaten too many treats; it's actually a normal part of your cat's anatomy! The technical term for this belly flap, which can often be seen swaying from side to side when a cat moves, is called the primordial pouch.

This loose skin and padding at the belly provides extra protection for the abdominal area during fights when ā€œbunny kickingā€ with their hind legs. It insulates and protects internal organs and allows a cat to store extra food in its belly. (Important for our ferals who sometimes go days without eating.) It also allows a cat freedom of movement to fully stretch and extend the back legs when running at high speed or jumping.

Some people believe that spaying or neutering causes this primordial pouch. This is a myth. All felines, regardless of their size, shape, or s*x have this extra flap of skin (including lions and tigers). Even cats who lose weight due to diet or illness still have these belly flaps.

(Many thanks to My Feral Fix for sharing this information!)

THE MOST DANGEROUS PET CHEW EVER: RAWHIDE!

How can one of the most popular chew sticks on the planet be so dangerous for your pets, you ask? I mean, most dogs chew on rawhide for hours on end, and not only does it keep them busy, but they seem to last forever.

Well if you understood what it took to make this toxic ā€œrawā€ leather stick, you would quickly understand what the problem is.

Aside from the horror stories circulating all over social media these days, of pets needing emergency surgery after consuming rawhide, the majority of pet parents today, especially the newbies, believe that this chew is some sort of dried up meat stick. Let me debunk that myth right away!

A rawhide stick is not the by-product of the beef industry nor is it made of dehydrated meat. Rather, rawhide is the by-product of the ā€œLeather Industryā€, so theoretically it is a leather chew. Sounds awesome, right?

ā€œProducing rawhide begins with the splitting of an animal hide, usually from cattle. The top grain is generally tanned and made into leather products, while the inner portion, in its ā€œrawā€ state, goes to the dogs.ā€ TheBark.com

So, how does this leather, which is conveniently rolled up into pretty shapes, actually get made into those rawhide chews?

Follow along my friends and I will enlighten you on how this hide travels through a leathery process where it transforms from hide to a not-so beautiful, colorful, chew stick. Here is a paraphrased tutorial that was explained by the whole dog journal several years back:

STEP 1: Normally, cattle hides are shipped from slaughterhouses to tanneries for processing. These hides are then treated with a chemical bath to help ā€œpreserveā€ the product during transport to help prevent spoilage.

(No one wants to purchase a black, spoiled rawhide stick!)

Once at the tannery: the hides are soaked and treated with either an ash-lye solution or a highly toxic recipe of sodium sulphide liming. This process will help strip the hair and fat that maybe attached to the hides themselves.

(No, no one wants to see a hairy hideā€¦)

Next on this glorious journey, these hides are then treated with chemicals that help ā€œpuffā€ the hide, making it easier to split into layers.

The outer layer of the hide is used for goods like car seats, clothing, shoes, purses, etc. But, itā€™s the inner layer that is needed to make the rawhide. (Oh and other things like gelatin, cosmetics, and glue as well!)

STEP 2: Now that we have the inner layer of the hide, itā€™s time to go to the post-tannery stage! Hides are washed and whitened using a solution of hydrogen peroxide and/or bleach; this will also help remove the smell of the rotten or putrid leather. Bonus!
(Research also shows that other chemicals maybe used here to help the whitening process if the bleach isnā€™t strong enough.)

STEP 3: Now itā€™s time to make these whitened sheets of this ā€œleathery by-productā€ look delicious! So, here is where the artistic painting process comes in.

ā€œBasted, smoked, and decoratively tinted products might be any color (or odor) underneath the coating of (often artificial) dyes and flavors. They can even be painted with a coating of titanium oxide to make them appear white and pretty on the pet store shelves.ā€ - whole-dog-journal.com

ā€œā€¦the Material Safety Data Sheet reveals a toxic confection containing the carcinogen FD&C Red 40, along with preservatives like sodium benzoate. But tracking the effects of chemical exposure is nearly impossible when itā€™s a matter of slow, low-dose poisoning.ā€ā€“ thebark.com

Ok, now that these hides have been painted, itā€™s time for the final process.

STEP 4: Getting it to last forever!

Because the FDA does not consider these chews to be food, really itā€™s a free for all when it comes to the manufacturers of these leather strips, and the products they may want to add to these chews, to get them to last forever. Any sort of glue can be added here to get these bad boys to never come apart.

When tested: Lead, arsenic, mercury, chromium salts, formaldehyde, and other toxic chemicals have been detected in raw hides. So itā€™s safe to say that any sort of glues can be used as well!

Finally, itā€™s time to package and attach all the glorious marketing labels to the product.

Check out the fine print warning thatā€™s attached with some of these rawhides:
ā€œChoking or blockages. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isnā€™t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.ā€œ

(Oh, how lovelyā€¦)

And there it is! Itā€™s now ready to be shipped to store shelves where it can be purchased for our loving animal companions.

How do proactive veterinarians feel about these chews?

Here is world-renowned veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker's take on the matter:

ā€œThe name ā€˜rawhideā€™ is technically incorrect. A more accurate name would be processed-hide, because the skin isnā€™t raw at all. But the term ā€œrawhideā€ has stuck.

Rawhide chews start out hard, but as your dog works the chew it becomes softer, and eventually he can unknot the knots on each end and the chew takes on the consistency of a slimy piece of taffy or bubble gum. And by that time your dog cannot stop working it -- it becomes almost addictive.

At this point, thereā€™s no longer any dental benefit to the chew because it has turned soft and gooey, and, in fact, it has become a choking and intestinal obstruction hazard.ā€œ

P.S. Ready for the jaw dropper?

An investigation by Humane Society International stated in their report, ā€œIn a particularly grisly twist, the skins of brutally slaughtered dogs in Thailand are mixed with other bits of skin to produce rawhide chew toys for pet dogs. Manufacturers told investigators that these chew toys are regularly exported to and sold in U.S. stores.ā€ ā€“ dogingtonpost.com

šŸ›‡ Use your Manners! šŸ›‡
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

šŸš©When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

šŸš©If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

šŸš©People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

šŸš©Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

šŸ¤” If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
āš Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
āš Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
āš Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
āš Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

šŸ¶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Balloons do not go to heaven. They land in the ocean and choke sea turtles, kill dolphins and whales, and the ribbons entangle birds. Many times, they end up on a beach as litter. Even the ones marked "biodegradable" can hurt animals before they have a chance to break down. Animals far from the ocean, such as horses, have been hurt and killed by balloons (they eat them when they land in their hay or they get spooked and bolt). Some balloons have started fires when they got entangled in power lines.
Sky lanterns have set homes, power lines, trees, and buildings on fire. Sky lanterns can also entangle an animal even if it is marketed as "biodegradable." There are many safe alternatives to releasing litter into the air, such as planting a tree for your loved one and watching it bloom, or blowing bubbles into the air. Grief is a painful process. In our grief, we do not need to cause others grief. While there are many environmental problems facing our planet, this is a very simple one to solve.

Please be very diligent night AND day through this fireworks season. And it can scare any animal, even ones not previously prone to being scared. In this situation this was a champion obedience/agility dog and was left in their fenced backyard while they went out for an early dinner. It was not dark but folks set off fireworks anyway. The owners came back to metal blinds tore down with his mouth cut up and him cowering in the bathtub. Even the most stable bomb proof pet can have a reaction.
