"A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, big or small, young or old. He/she doesn't care if you're not smart, not popular, not a good joke-teller, not the best athlete, nor the best-looking person. To your dog, you are the greatest, the smartest, the nicest human being who was ever born. You are his/her friend and protector". Louis Sabin

Coco was very excited after her grooming experience. Always remember to treat your pets with love.

Pet Hygiene

Ear cleaning/ Flushing:

Cleaning your dog's ear can be a daunting task for some pet owners but here are 3 easy steps to get started.

1. Assemble your supplies and your dog. Try to clean your dog’s ears when he is calm, as this will help make the process easier.

2. Ear clean: apply a small amount of veterinary approved ear cleaner to a cotton ball and apply the solution to outer ear dislodging and removing any debris/ wax that is seen.

Ear flush: Squeeze to fill your dog’s ear canal with a veterinary-approved cleaner and massage gently at the base of the ear for about 30 seconds. You will hear a squishing sound as the product dislodges debris and buildup. Don’t let the tip of the applicator touch your dog’s ear, as this can introduce bacteria.

3. Let your dog shake his head. Once your dog has finished shaking, take the cotton ball or gauze or Q tip (cotton tip applicator) and gently wipe out the ear canal. If your dog appears to be in pain during the ear flushing process, stop and consult your veterinarian.

Please note: Ear flushes should only be done once recommended by your veterinarian. Cleaners with hydrogen peroxide or alcohol can cause irritation within the ear canal, especially if the canal is inflamed or ulcerated

Pet Hygiene:

Nail Trimming

Nail trimming is an activity that is often feared by both pets and their owners, an event categorized by angst and drama.

Active to hyperactive animals who are housed on rough surfaces (concrete), cutting nails may not be necessary due to constant friction which wears them down naturally. Contrary to rough surfaces, animals housed on smooth surfaces (tile), excessively long toenails are more common than not.

Overgrown nails posses to be a very painful experience for these animals. With time, due to the natural directional growth of your pet's nail, they can overgrow into the skin or the footpads of your pet leading to a break in the animal's skin barrier and secondary bacterial infections.

Today a colleague (non-vet) asked me, what do we (veterinarians) look for under the microscope when we do a skin scrape sample. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to show her because the animal was negative for Demodicosis ( Demodex mites) otherwise known to the public as 'Mange' but pictures are always available to give us an imagination.

Brief Description:

This condition can be observed on dogs of all ages. It is a normal inhabitant of the skin and can be transmitted to puppies via contact with the mom during feedings or when adult dogs are immunosuppressed by an underlying systemic disease or drug. These organisms overgrow/multiply on the skin producing a generalized or localized skin condition know to the general public as ' Mange'.

Attached is a magnified photo of the little cigar-shaped creatures.

#10 Fun Facts about TICKS

1. Ticks have their own community.
There are almost 900 tick species worldwide.

2. Ticks are not insects.
Ticks are arachnids. This means that they are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than insects.

3. Ticks are mini, real-life vampires... They want to suck your blood.
Did you know that ticks require a blood meal to survive?

4. Ticks are daredevils.
They crawl up low brush or grass to find a host. Then, they clasp on with their back legs and reach their front legs out to grab onto a passing animal or human.

5. Ticks are dog lovers, too.
Some ticks species prefer dogs as hosts. Unfortunately, dogs are often easy targets when playing in the yard or going for a walk in wooded areas.

6. When it comes to feeding, ticks are in it for the long haul.
Ticks are adapted to feed for long periods of time. Each feeding may last 24hrs or longer. They bury their mouthparts deep into the skin of a host, so they can remain securely attached for days on end to eat.

7. Ticks like to play hide and seek.
Ticks like to hide (burrow) in crevices such as wood and bricks and tree bark up to 4 feet off the ground.

8. Ticks are pure at birth.
Ticks are not born with disease agents. They acquire them during feeding and pass them along to other animals during subsequent feedings.

9. Ticks are prolific baby mommas.
On average a tick can lay over 1,500 eggs after one feeding. Once engorged the female ticks mates with the male, lays eggs, and dies soon after. Male ticks die after mating

10. Don't discriminate.
Whether you are of a high gene pool or not, once an infected tick latches on, it transfers the infectious agent to its host.

Ticks transmit pathogens that cause diseases through the process known as feeding. They firmly embed their mouthparts deep within the host skin, feeding on the host blood and thereby transmitting pathogens from the saliva of the ticks to the blood of the host.
