Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in unspayed female dogs, though it can also affect cats and other mammals. The term "pyometra" means "pus-filled uterus," and it describes exactly what happens in this disease: the uterus fills with pus due to a severe bacterial infection 😷
Symptoms of Pyometra:
Increased drinking and urination
Loss of appetite
Lethargy or depression
Vomiting or diarrhea
Abdominal distension (a swollen belly)
Vaginal discharge, which may be pus-like or have a foul smell, especially in the case of an open pyometra where the cervix is open and allows pus to drain
Fever
Types of Pyometra: There are two types of pyometra in dogs:
Open pyometra: The cervix is open, allowing pus and other discharge to leave the body. This type can be slightly easier to diagnose due to visible discharge.
Closed pyometra: The cervix is closed, which means that the pus cannot escape the uterus, making the condition more dangerous and urgent as it can lead to the uterus rupturing.
Treatment: The primary treatment for pyometra is surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries (ovariohysterectomy, commonly known as spaying). This surgery is more complex and risky when performed on an animal with pyometra due to the inflamed and fragile state of the uterus and the risk of spreading infection. Antibiotics and supportive care such as intravenous fluids are also essential parts of treatment. In cases where surgery cannot be performed, certain hormonal treatments may be attempted, but these are less commonly recommended due to lower success rates and high risks.
Prevention: The most effective way to prevent pyometra is to spay female dogs at an appropriate age before they develop the condition. This eliminates the risk by removing the uterus and ovaries that are affected by the disease.
Due to the severity and the rapid progression of pyometra, it is considered an emergency. If you suspect your dog might have pyometra, it is crucial to
