The total length reaches up to 16 cm. The body is often brightly colored above, mostly green. The abdomen is yellowish, lemon-colored. Sexual dimorphism is manifested in different colors of the female and male, the latter being darker. The body is slender, the tail is rather long. It has the ability to break off in case of danger (self-mutilation). The skin is covered with small scales. The head has properly arranged shields on top, which lie on top of the bone plates fused to the skull - osteoderms. On the tail, the scales form regular rings. Femoral pores are present. The eyes have separate eyelids, with a transparent or translucent window on the lower one. The temporal arches are well developed.
