За последние полтысячелетия с лица Земли исчезло более 150 видов птиц, и еще 1200 – на грани исчезновения в настоящее время. Тем удивительнее история, произошедшая на острове Борнео. Здесь, в райском уголке, была случайно обнаружена птичка, которую 180 лет считали вымершей. Утраченный, как полагали ученые, вид со смешным названием «чернобровый болтун» – оказывается, вовсе не исчез. И обнаружилось это при очень интересных обстоятельствах.

Winter hibernation in gophers ends at the end of March or beginning of April. Males are the first to awaken. After females awaken, the mating period begins, and fights between males often occur at this time.

Gophers live a terrestrial lifestyle. They usually live in colonies, in burrows that they dig themselves. The length of burrows and their structure vary among gopher species and depend on their habitat. On sandy soils, burrows are long, up to 15 m, and about 3 m deep. On dense clay soils, the burrows do not exceed 5-7 m. Inside the burrows there is a nesting chamber, which gophers line with dry grass. Gophers are known to stand on their hind legs and whistle in case of danger.

Поэтому ее и прозвали Гамбургер. А Розовое озеро манит туристов своей сказочной красотой. Хотя это всего лишь работа водорослей.

Gophers are widely distributed in steppe, forest-steppe, meadow-steppe, and forest-tundra landscapes of temperate latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. They are characteristic of open landscapes. Over meadow areas of river valleys they pass beyond the Arctic Circle, and over steppified areas they enter semi-deserts and even deserts; over mountain steppes they ascend to mountains up to 3500 m above sea level. Their lifestyle is terrestrial; they live in colonies, in burrows that they dig themselves.

Gophers are very funny animals. They are quite interesting to watch. They are very cautious, but as soon as one or two of them come out of their burrow and start playing, they are immediately surrounded by dozens of other gophers. And when there is a danger, they all scatter very quickly, and in a moment the clearing becomes empty.

All gophers go into a deep winter hibernation. Species inhabiting arid areas hibernate as soon as the grass burns out, i.e., in mid-summer, and they do not leave their dens until spring. Hibernating gopher cannot wake up quickly and is completely defenseless against enemies, even small rodents. It is protected only by an earth plug, with which the entrance to the burrow is blocked. A vertical "ventilation shaft" rises from the hibernation chamber; it doesn't reach the surface a bit. In spring, the animal leaves the burrow through this vertical passage.

Gophers are notorious dormice. They hibernate not only in the cold fall and winter, but also on summer days to avoid dehydration or to escape hunger.

Gophers are small rodents, the closest relatives of squirrels. These animals live in open spaces: steppes, tundras, and deserts of the Northern Hemisphere. Gophers can be found above the Arctic Circle and live high in the mountains, where vegetation is still present.
