Due to hunting for it and, above all, due to the destruction of its habitat, the total number of the four-horned antelope has fallen to 10 thousand individuals.

This is a rather small antelope, with a body height of only 60 cm and a weight of about 20 kg. Her coat is brown, except for her belly, which is white. Horns grow only in males. The posterior pair reaches a length of 10 cm, while both anterior horns are much smaller and in some cases almost invisible. Sometimes they can, however, reach 4 cm. Four-horned antelopes are extremely shy animals and live secretly in the jungles of India and Nepal. They lead a solitary lifestyle and eat herbs.

Some species are found in North America, such as the pronghorn (the old name is the Rocky Mountain chamois). Only one species lives in Europe: the saiga (Colus tataricus vel saiga saiga), which lives outside of Asia in the steppes of Kazakhstan and Russia and is distinguished by sharp, slightly curved horns. Previously, chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) were also classified as real antelopes, but now they are classified as goats. A slightly larger number of antelopes are found in Asia, but the vast majority of them are found in South Africa. Many of these species were already known to the ancients: for example, the gazelle (Gazella dorcas), thanks to its brilliant black eyes, even served as a comparison for Arabic writers.

In all antelopes, the legs are usually rather long and slender, the tail ends in a tuft of hair, the hair is short and painted in vibrant colors; many antelopes, like deer, have so-called lacrimal canals under the eyes. The size of the described animals is very different: the dwarf antelope (Cephalophus) reaches a height of only 20-23 cm, while the largest species are up to 1.6 and 2 meters tall. All antelopes are peaceful, social, shy animals and are remarkable for the extreme speed of their movements.

The classification of antelopes, as well as the general classification of bovids by subfamilies, genera and species, is not well-established .
