Schur is a medium-sized songbird of the finches family. Adults reach 25 cm in length, with a wingspan of 35-37 cm, and a body weight of 50 to 60 g.

Its head and chest are painted in a bright crimson color. The back is also crimson, the tail and wings are brown-brown, they have horizontal black and white stripes, the feathers on the abdomen are gray. Having met this bird in the forest on a tree branch, it is impossible to take your eyes off the bright, motley speck, which stands out noticeably against the background of frosty, black-and-white, sleeping in thick snow, nature. Like most birds, the female, unlike the motley and conspicuous males, looks rather modest. The “girls” of the schura, instead of a crimson catchy shade, are painted in yellow-brown tones.
