The king cobra regulates the flow of venom during an attack by closing the ducts of the venom glands through muscle contractions. The amount of consumed poison depends on the size of the victim and usually exceeds the lethal dose by almost an order of magnitude . Most often, trying to scare away a person, the snake makes “blank” bites, without injecting poison at all. Apparently, this is due to the fact that the cobra needs poison primarily for hunting, and accidental or unnecessary losses are undesirable.
