The book authored by Philip-Sebastian Gehring is a true must-read for every keeper/breeder of leaf-tailed geckos from Madagascar. This book contains a lot of useful information and we must admit that a lot of success that we achieved in breeding of Uroplatus, was inspired by this book)
It is widely known that various food supply makes your animals more healthy. The more food items you provide for your animals - the better chance they will have to show their natural habits and keep themselves fit. We try to make diet of our Petrosaurus thalassinus as diverse as possible. This time they got crickets and zophobas - their favourite treat)))
In his article, our author - Sam Aneca, will tell you how ZOO Antwerpen managed to keep several species of reptiles in the same enclosure in coplete harmony. To learn more about their experience and approches please read Sam's article "Cohabitation: development of a mixed Guatemalan species exhibit at Antwerp Zoo".
Every start of the day brings us more and more cute babis of Uromastyx dispar flavifasciata
Leaf-tailed geckos are famous for their habit to hide their clutches in leaf litter, soil, turf etc. Therefore finding their eggs might be a little bit tricky...especially when you have more than 100 pairs! For us this is a routine work, and you are welcome to ioin us!

Angle-headed forest dragons – a coming trend in herpetoculture. Depending on a variety of factors with the success in breeding, certain species will become popular, and we have seen many such "waves of popularity" over the years: Leopard geckos, veiled chameleons, crested geckos, ball pythons, day geckos, bearded dragons and many more! What species will be next? We believe that the Angle-headed forest dragon (Hypsilurus magnus) - from Papua New Guinea has the characteristics to become one of those species. These lizards are large, and quite intelligent, with a perfect dragon-like appearance that makes them perfect display animals.
Fortunately, thanks to several breeders they have been introduced into Herpetoculture in some numbers. No mass import-export bans are known. The species readily reproduces in captivity, which will make the species quite affordable in the near future. You might consider looking for yours right now?

Why can geckos hang on a completely flat surface? The answer is more complicated than it was thought. Of course, this topic has been discussed many times in many media. We all were amazed by this ability of many gecko species: Phelsuma, Saltuarius, Rhacodactylus, and Uroplatus etc. The answer is van der Waals forces, molecular attractions that operate over very small distances. This force comes from fluctuations in charge distributions between neighboring molecules, which need not be polar; their charge fluctuations naturally fall into synch, creating an attractive force.
Why do we incubate Mniarogekko chahoua eggs incorrectly? It is widely known that eggs of most reptile species should be incubated at certain more or less stable temperatures. However, for some species regular temperature changes throughout the day are extremely important for proper development of an embryo. When incubated under constant temperatures, eggs of these species still have chances to hatch, but with a very high ratio of pre-hatching mortality or low viability of babies. After many years of experience we now have stable mass production of Mossy New Caledonian geckos. In this manual you will learn how to implement incubation with minimal pre-hatching death rate. You can purchase and see our manual about Mniarogekko chahoua by clicking on the link below this video👇

Welcome to our blog, my friends!🙌
I think that many of you have heard about Abronias.... Some of you have probably even seen these large, intelligent and colorful lizards in reptile collections. They are very rare and it is hard to believe that they can be bred in captivity. But under proper management - this is quite possible. One of our authors, Jason Wagner, knows all about them! He was very kind to present his article about these marvelous lizards in Issue #6 of the Responsible Herpetoculture Journal. Read more about them inside! There you will also find articles on regular breeding of West Malaysian Box turtles, salamanders of Germany, history of Reptile Department of San Diego Zoo and much more! Providing a seasonal cooling period is a key factor of successful breeding of Armadillo girdled lizards!
For several recent years we have developed a breeding technique in order to successfully produce offspring from our breeding group of Ouroborus cataphractus on a regular basis. Such information derived from the practices of Responsible Herpetoculture is of great importance to the global conservation of this endangered species! In our manual, we discuss the approach that we use to provide winter dormancy in our lab conditions that appears to provide the key triggers for successful copulation. Please see our manual from BION on keeping and breeding Armadillo girdled lizards by clicking on the link👇

The greater siren - promising species that would benefit from ex situ conservation!
Recently RHP has published Issue #7 of our Responsible herpetoculture Journal, from which you can learn about breeding the unique and strange-looking greater siren! Personally, I could not even imagine that these amphibians could be bred in captivity! But one of our authors, Phillip Tomaschke, has been successfully breeding them for many years now! He shared his experience in our journal, where you can also find articles on the history of legendary “The Vivarium” magazine, captive breeding of common monkey lizards (Polychrus marmoratus), story of reptile pet-shop in The Netherlands, cohabitation of Guatemalan species in Antwerp Zoo, breeding of leopard ratsnake in Ukraine, an interview with the great Tom Crutchfield and many more other fascinating articles! Recently, Cuban false chameleons, known as Chamaeleolis (Anolis) porcus, were included in CITES Appendix III. This designation has led to their ban from import to the USA, and has made legal obtaining these species much more complicated. As a result, the animals that still exist in private and zoo collections in the country have become genetically isolated and the opportunities of maintaining genetic diversity and gene flow between the breeding groups have become very limited. The total number of C. porcus in herpetoculture in USA is very small, and this legislation also sets the path for the effects of inbreeding depression in species with a small captive gene pool such as Chamaeleolis. This unfortunate situation can be improved through mass propagation of achievements of herpetoculture in the general public and official institutions. These kinds of achievements in herpetoculture can be an important conservation tool.

Herping in Pamir mountains, Tajikistan, vicinities of Khorog city
Recently we found and archived video-report from a short herping trip of Oleksii Marushchak to Tajikistan. In this video you will see the natural habitats of several interesting reptiles that inhabit the valley of Shokhdara river in the vicinities of the Khorog city. The most remarkable thing is that the temperature drops here even between the day and night are consiberable. So we will show you a small part the place, high in the mountaine, where reptiles manage to survive as well.

Sometimes feeding process leads to unstoppable laugh!) Some of our reptiles show extreme impatience waiting for their favourite meal!) For example, Hypsilurus magnus (angle-headed forest dragons) captive bred in 2021 at BION Terrarium Center.
Twins of black-and-white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata) were recently born in Responsible Zooculture Center near Kyiv where we used to take care of the evacuated animals during the first months of the war. Babies enjoy playing in their big and comfortable enclosure with their mom. Actually this is her second litter.
We appreciate your support of our breeding initiative in terms of functioning of Responsible Zooculture Center (Ukraine).
