Herp-related tourism or “herping”, the herpetological version of bird watching, is on the rise and there are many reasons for this.

They include:
Greater opportunities for travel around the world. A personal need for broader knowledge and experiences, not only about nature but also of other human societies and cultures (field herping invariably involves human interactions).
Personal desires to see the subjects of a hobby in their natural habitats
To experience the immeasurable sense of unity with Mother Nature
The need for a perspectival reset, away from the noise of the modern, technologically driven world, to remind us of the diversity of sentience/mind in nature and the foundations of our existence. To refresh one’s spirits with like-minded people in our specialist hobby and community.
Citizen science. Like bird watching, locality notes and photographs contribute to the body of knowledge on species, their variations, and distribution. Thus, many field herpers are also citizen scientists that post their findings on sites like iNaturalist.

When summer is closer and closer and you have to wake up earlier to do some exercises to look at least somehow fit on the beach, but your babe lies in the crib and says to sleep another 30 minutes))
The first Microlophus albemarlensis in 2024 breeding season!
Dmitri Tkachev, BION Terrarium Center visiting Jersey Zoo
How big they grow!! The smaller ones on my hand show the current size of our captive bred spicimens. Of cource immediatelly after hatching they are way smaller. And look to what giants they grow (I have quite a big hand, by the way!).
When you woke up for the love time but you want another several days of rest))) Female of Uromastyx ornata (Ornate spiny-tailed lizard) so far refuses the male's courtship dances by rolling upside down))) An interesting behavioral pattern, that will change with time very soon)) She is just not ready so far)
Disclaimer: sorry for the video quality. Had only several seconds to film it))) Later the animals were separated in order not to stress the female too much.
The book authored by Philip-Sebastian Gehring is a true must-read for every keeper/breeder of leaf-tailed geckos from Madagascar. This book contains a lot of useful information and we must admit that a lot of success that we achieved in breeding of Uroplatus, was inspired by this book)
It is widely known that various food supply makes your animals more healthy. The more food items you provide for your animals - the better chance they will have to show their natural habits and keep themselves fit. We try to make diet of our Petrosaurus thalassinus as diverse as possible. This time they got crickets and zophobas - their favourite treat)))
In his article, our author - Sam Aneca, will tell you how ZOO Antwerpen managed to keep several species of reptiles in the same enclosure in coplete harmony. To learn more about their experience and approches please read Sam's article "Cohabitation: development of a mixed Guatemalan species exhibit at Antwerp Zoo".
Every start of the day brings us more and more cute babis of Uromastyx dispar flavifasciata
