The manul was first described in 1776 by Peter Simon Pallas. The species is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, but in the past it had a near vulnerable status; in addition, the species is included in the Red Books of various countries. Some populations are threatened by poaching, prey reduction due to rodent control programs, and habitat fragmentation due to anthropogenic factors. The manul has been studied rather poorly due to its secrecy and rarity.

Manul lives in treeless, arid areas with a sharply continental climate: in the mountains, steppes and semi-deserts, where little snow falls. Manul is not adapted to fast running, but is well camouflaged. Shelter arranges in rock crevices or in burrows of other animals, feeds mainly on pikas and rodents. In the wild, it breeds once a year, pregnancy lasts 60-75 days.

The length of the head and body is from 46 to 65 cm, the length of the tail is from 21 to 31 cm, and the weight is 2-5 kg.
