We ought to start looking at farming as a business other than a side hustle, that's when we shall rip more from this venture. Farming is a business that can pay a proprietor on a daily, weekly or monthly basis for as long as one makes proper planning.

When it comes to farming, there's nothing that can make quick returns on investment than broiler farming. Through doing things right, it has been evident that at 3Β½ weeks, one can start harvesting their birds. Don't leave that store/room without anything that can bring in some money at the end of the month, put in some broilers.

If you're wondering how to do it, we can help you take the first steps through house construction, general broiler management advise, stocking, feeding and brooding

The tough times have made us tougher and we're still moving. After sometime without doing layers, few months from now we shall be in egg production once again.

PREVENTION OF POULTRY THEFTS BY CHICKEN BUYERS AT OUR FARMS.

Posted by Blessed Farms Ug

Bringing up chicken to a market size is a hectic, stressful and above all financially draining process to a poultry farmer. After enduring all that period, some people who pretend to be buyers or our very own workers steal the birds thus causing losses to the farmer.

Below I share some tips on how we can ensure maximum security of our birds and effectively account for every bird.

1. CCTV Camera installation

This is one of the most effective ways of securing our birds mostly from the workers and any other person who accesses our poultry farms. With camera installation, you can track down whoever steals your birds.

2. Have proper records of your birds.

Well organized and updated records will help you understand how many birds died during the raring process, how many were sold and the balance.

3. Count your birds before calling buyers.

Before having buyers to buy your birds, it's advised to first confirm the exact total number of birds you have at your farm. Whereas this might be difficult with large poultry Farms, but proper records can help you know the birds you have.

4. Buyers at the farm.

Do's βœ…
πŸ‘‰After agreeing on the price, farmers are advised to ask the buyers how many birds they're taking.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Have a separate place to put the birds that a buyer is picking. This will help you to count and confirm the total birds a buyer has picked from the house.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Let the buyer pick the birds, gives them to you and confirm the number before placing them in the separate place. (It's advised to pick a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10birds)

πŸ‘‰πŸ»After picking the number, let the buyer leave your poultry house. Ask your workers to assist you pick the birds from the separate place to the buyers' cage, while confirming the number.

You are free to offload the birds from the vehicle or motorcycle and recount again if you feel you're not satisfied. This is business and you have to mean business

Don'ts❌

πŸ‘‰πŸ»Never allow a buyer to put you on pressure that he's in a hurry and no need to count the birds, Or those who say you should trust them. Make your own rules and ensure theyre followed.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Never allow buyers to start a motorcycle/car with your birds loaded saying the one remaining behind will pay you or we're returning with the money. Ensure that every bird that leaves the farm, money is already in your pocket.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Never allow any person to pick your birds while loading at the same time without confirming what they've picked.

Last but not least, if buyers steal your birds, let's use social media to blacklist them. Share their contacts and where they work from.

With the coming festive season, thefts will be rampant and since we need these buyers, and also the fact that not all of them are thieves, we have to be security conscience to ensure that our birds aren't stolen

Dynamics of investment in poultry and related ventures.

Have you wondered why poultry farming can be profitable to one farmer and less profitable to another even after doing everything perfectly?

We all know forces of demand and supply will always play a crucial role in determining the price you'll sell your birds. Less demand means low prices and vise versa.

The time I've now spent in this venture, I can predict when the demand will be high and low. For example few weeks towards the end of the last lockdown I encouraged fellow farmers to stock birds, those who took my advice reaped well.

During the 42days of the lockdown many famers cancelled their Broiler orders because they thought no one would buy them. At that time, one would get chicks the day of payment, meaning it wasn't necessary for you to book. Even a student who had just done some basics in economics would see it that there will be a time when the supply of mature Broilers will be less to meet the demand.

This is what happened after the lockdown. People who had mature or semi-mature birds sold them expensively and they earned well. Buyers were buying chicks of 3 weeks at 12k and they would travel long journeys outside the city to get birds.

At the moment things have started slightly to change. However much chicks are scarce, but mature Broilers have started surfacing. Currently, unless your buyers need small birds, you'll not be able to sell your small birds expensively like the way it has been 3-4weeks back. Buyers have started to go for quality birds and at a cheaper price.

With the current increasing prices of maize and feeds plus the decreasing demand of birds, this is the time a strategic business person who has been in poultry to think about another venture related to poultry.

A venture one could think of currently is maize growing. But by the fact that it will take several months to have it ready and with the dynamics of our market, the best solution would be importing it from our neighboring countries who might be having excess of it.

This will help poultry farmers to remain in business as we wait for our Christmas peak 😊. With the current high prices of feeds, birds and the decreasing demand of birds, poultry farming is going to be a less profitable venture.

*Disclaimer* . This post is bound to time and the views shared might be different from what might actually happen to the industry in future.

08/08/2021

In search for suitable Broilers that suit our clients' preference today we realized that many farmers fail to attain an average size of at least 1.5kgs at 5weeks. (We say at least because some of us attain over 2kgs at 5weeksπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ). This is not witchcraft but let's give you some tips to attain this.

1. Book quality chicks
We have quite a number of chick suppliers, please make some research to find out which company to choose (no company pays us for adverts so we won't mention any here πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ)

2. Have quality feeds for your birds.
One of the farmers we visited today told us she just sends a boda guy and they mix for her feeds. This is wrong. Be cautious of how your feeds are mixed and choose the best feeds for your birds.

3. Brood your Chicks for at least 2 weeks.
At start this was the major cause of our poor performance at our farm. The moment you don't give enough heat to your Chicks, they will pile themselves together for warmth and thereby won't eat to attain early required weight

4. Protect your birds from being attacked by diseases.
Sickly birds won't grow and therefore we need to protect our chicken from being attacked by diseases through vaccination, putting some bio-security measures in place and good sanitation for your birds.

5. Rare what you can manage to feed.
Young farmers get stuck with birds because of biting what they can't chew. You rather stock 100birds that you can feed other than 500birds that you won't be able to sustain.

What are the most profitable birds to keep?

Posted by Blessed FARMS Ug.

This is the most asked question by people who want to venture in poultry. Today let's try to answer it for our young farmers.

For starters we should note that we have three types of birds that one should choose from to venture in. Layers (Eggs), Broilers (meat) & dual purpose (for eggs and meat) birds.

1. Time factor.
If you're in poultry business for a short time say for a holiday, my advice would be venturing in Broilers since at 5weeks you'll be harvesting them, unlike layers and dual purpose birds that require over 19-23 weeks to start production.

2. Capital
All types of chicken need good amount of capital to rare, but this will depend with the number of birds you want to start with. It's advised one to first determine the amount of capital needed to bring up the birds you plan to venture in.

3. Farm location.
Layer birds will be more productive when your farm is located in a quiet and conducive environment. When you plan to start up an urban farm where there's much sound pollution, better choose Broiler birds.

4. Mode of farming
Dual purpose birds will do best on free range system. This is suitable when one has ample space to let the birds move freely. Broilers will be profitable for a farmer doing deep litter/ closed-door system.

5. Nature of available Market.
Market research is so important to every business. It involves finding out exactly what people in your locality need. Eggs or meat? This will help you decide on what type of birds are more profitable in the area.

6. Seasons
It's important to understand the seasons when the demand for certain poultry products increases. If you're planning for festive seasons like Christmas, Eid plus others, you should think of dual purpose birds. They tend to be more profitable in such seasons.

In a nutshell, all types of birds are profitable if one bares in mind the above factors, but Broilers in short run, layers and dual purpose birds in a long run.

Marketing Strategy of your Broilers.

One of the challenges that has forced many farmers to exit the broiler business is lack of customers to buy their birds when they get ready. When a broiler reaches market size it has to be disposed off. The longer it stays at the farm, the more it consumes and thereby reduces the profits.

It's therefore important one to have a market strategy before venturing in poultry farming. Below I discuss 5 ways on how you can market your broilers

1. Engage your friends on your social media platforms.

If you think having many "friends" or followers on social media isn't beneficial, please I think it's time to change that mindset. Anyone reading your status, viewing your pics is a capable customer of your birds. Instead of posting pics of how you hanged out over the weekend, think of posting your birds.

2. Approach those roadside chicken roasters.

In most trading centers we have those boys roasting chicken and others frying chips. They have a daily need of Broilers. Approach them and trust me the next morning they will be at your gate.

3. Supermarkets and Hotels.

Whereas I have reservations with hotel and supermarket supply because of their mode of payment, they can also be another place where you can supply your birds. For the sake of supermarket, you have to dress the birds, brand them well and put them in their deep freezers.

4. Have a stall and sell your birds

Having a stall in a market is the most effective way of selling your birds. It will make you sell your Broilers at a good price thereby making some good profits. The only challenge with this method is that one has to be consistent in production. At Blessed, this has been our marketing strategy.

5. Get boys to move around and sell the birds

Farms with workers can adopt this strategy. Unlike with stall opening, hawking is a cheaper and one of the effective ways of selling broiler chicken. Even if you don't have workers, you can do it yourselfπŸ˜ƒ. Let's not get ashamed of looking for money.

The demand of broiler birds is high because people eat chicken everyday. But unless we leave our comfort places we shall not see the market. As farmers we ought to think outside the box. It's only farmers with poor quality birds who will fail to find market for them

How it always begin.

*Brooding*
This is the most crucial stage of a bird. It involves caring for a day old chick by providing all the conditions required for it to grow well. Proper brooding of a bird will play 40% of your success.

This stage is so hectic but enjoyable if you're passionate about farming. The joy of seeing a small Chick grow into a young bird and later a mature big chicken is unexplainable.

The most important things every farmer should put more emphasis during this stage include, providing heat for the birds, giving fresh and clean water all times, give quality feeds with enough proteins to help the birds grow faster, put in place bio security measures to prevent disease outbreaks and lastly utmost attention.

The brooding stage always last for 2 weeks though other people can prolong it to the 3 weeks

Do you have issues with brooding?
Please we can do it for you at affordable prices

*Business Vs Passion*

A case of poultry farming.

A few weeks back my cousin sister requested me to es**rt her to a farm land they had just acquired few months back that side of Entebbe.

Upon reaching the land my attention was drawn towards lines of poultry houses that were empty. A lot had been invested by the former occupant of the land to put up a poultry project.

All the houses were connected with automatic water system, electricity that was powered by solar panels in case of load shedding, workers' houses, CCTV cameras and a drained electric well.

Sited on a 5 acred land, the farm which now had a few cows, goats and pigs looked to have everything everyone who dreams to make a poultry farm would ever dream of.

So many questions at this point in time made rounds in my mind. The most perturbing one was, why would a well structured, organised and equipped farm like this fail???

Whereas the current Covid situation might have had much impact on many businesses, one would expect this farm to survive like many others that are still in existence

Many poultry farms have dissolved due to the fact that the managers/founders aimed for "business" and never had the passion for the venture. I always tell people that if you don't have passion for poultry, don't waste your time venturing in chicken.

It's true in everything we invest in we expect something in return, we expect to grow, we expect to make lots of money out of it, but with poultry your passion for chicken will determine how far you move.

That inner drive that will make you first feed your birds before you eat, that drive that will make you stay behind to observe the behaviors of your birds when the workers are asleep, the drive that will make you give the best to your birds, it's what we call passion.

The passion you possess will make you give the best to your birds and in return they'll give you the best in terms of weight (for Broilers) or eggs ( For layers) and thereby being in business.

In a nutshell, for poultry farming, passion has to come first and later business. The moment you put business first, you are digging a ditch for yourself.

A colleague today called me to inquire how to start up a poultry farm. I felt I should share the advice I gave him to others who might also be interested to venture in the poultry business.

This venture is not about how much you have on your account, how much knowledge you've gathered, how big or small land you have, but rather how ready you are to face the challenges that comes with raring chicken.

This colleague of mine was asking me about the books that I've read and inside me I was like, I wish you knew how poor I'm at reading books πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ. I rather read on phone other than dozing in a book.

My simple advice to this friend of mine and to everyone who wants to start up a poultry farm was/is to LEARN YOUR OWN WAY. What worked for Blessed might not work for Jesca.

Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not discouraging anyone to read books or to seek knowledge, but different farms or people will face different challenges depending on many factors such as location, whether, season, culture, to mention a few.

Being an urban farm, we have always been faced with a problem of flue at our farms due to the congestion in the city and therefore I spend much on medication, this might not be a problem to farm in a rural setting.

Having knowledge on the basics such as the types of birds you want to rear, how to care for them, type of feeds to use, how to vaccinate them and how to identify sick birds are the basics of starting up something.

Any shelter you're having can work, for as long as it's ventilated to allow aeration. Success in this venture can be measured in percentages. If you score 60% for the start, that's not bad. Another important aspect is growing with your customer base.

One of the major challenge that poultry farmers face mostly for Broilers is market for their birds. Start with a few birds and grow with your market base other than stocking to many birds and you fail to sell them.

Lastly get someone who is already in business to "walk with". It's not a must that you have to do everything he tells you, but they will help you to take off.

All the best
