It’s crazy how two pups from the same litter can have such different personalities! One is charging through life like Sylvester Stallone in the Rocky movies. Can barely sit still long enough for a photo. Any available object becomes a chew toy to destroy.
The other one sits and watches the story unfold. Or tags along behind.

Why does Stallone look so sad? Because her sister has been claimed by a very active family who will love on her and give her lots of space to roam on the farm.

There is nothing like the love of a mama for her kids! Shaka is taking great care of Roxy (front) and Stallone. Roxy is slightly smaller but more outgoing. We are looking forward to watch these two grow up!

Meet the current Zulu tribe!
Oden, a Rottweiler mix, is the newest member but he already has our son looking up to him. Don’t let him fool you with this gentle pose, though! He is the most athletic of the bunch and guards his domain fiercely.

Shaka is the original Zulu. Unlike Oden, she is much more of a protector than a hunter. I have seen her defend our chickens from other dogs. The one exception, though, is geckos. None is safe in our compound! She is also expected to add some youngsters to the tribe in November 😀

Savage is 10 months old and still discovering his personality. It had been fun seeing him mature and pick up his share of the guard duties. He might be the most consistently patient with our little dude.

Hello, my name is Rocky (at least, until my new owner gives me a different name).

I enjoy hangin with my mom and adopted brother, fighting with plastic bottles, digging holes and chasing after my human friends.
I am very outgoing, I’m learning to talk, and I have super soft hair, perfect for scratching.
I dream of guarding an estate when I grow up. I’m already working on my scary bark. My human friends say I’m going to get pretty big. I don’t know, but I do trip over my huge paws sometimes.
I’m 75% Boerboel and 25% Rottweiler. My human friends call me a brindle

Well, I’ve got naps to take and a brother to pester so I’d better run along. Peace out.

Our brand is . Shaka’s protectiveness of her pup does not trump her to the tribe.
No outsiders may approach her pup but she is as gentle as she knows how to be with our 4 month old son.

Last Tuesday, Shaka gave birth to one male pup. We were a bit disappointed to not see more pups but Briscoe is quite thrilled to get all the milk and body heat he wants!
Yes, he is spoken for. And, yes, we are taking reservations for the next litter!

We are very excited to finally be able to mate these two. It is our first attempted litter out of Shaka.

There will probably always be a local dog in our tribe. For some reason we love the personality they bring. There is also a certain satisfaction in taking a would-be village castaway and turning him into a healthy, respectable citizen.

Where Pumba was all fire and fight, Frankie is quiet and playful.
He doesn’t bust into your heart, he more so sneaks in sideways and then curls up inside.

Some days Shaka has so much energy we need to run it off in the compound. A simple empty empty soda bottle is all she needs to be thoroughly entertained.

Note the shrieks of happiness from the 2 year old off camera. I am amazed at how a giant powerhouse of a dog can be such a great friend to even young children.

Shaka loves the wind in her face and only recently has she gotten strong and nimble enough to load herself from level ground when I drop the tailgate. Not an easy feat with the on the truck.

Shaka loves riding along when I drive to the site of our new house. She has quite a reputation in the village and has earned a heathy respect from most of our neighbors.
When Kellen showed up for the week for Christmas, though, he fell in love with Shaka and she didn’t try to change his mind.
I love way he adores her and she soaks it up, but Lord have mercy on anyone who would try to hurt him while Shaka is on watch!

Pumba. Your time was too short but you left your mark. Both in our hearts and on our clothes.
You embraced every adventure. Except the ones that separated you from us.
You cried every morning to come be with us and danced with joy every time we drive in the gate.
You fought anybody and everybody . With that big goofy grin on your face.
You uncorked the mama heart inside Esperanza Daye Smucker . And then you left us before you got to meet our firstborn.
There will never be another one like you. Ever. So we won’t try to replace you.
We’ll just remember you forever and laugh at your dynamic, goofy personality. We’ll be grateful for the love and joy you brought to us at just the right time.

P.S. the last video of him on a walk is the day before Spe went to the hospital to deliver our baby and two days before Pumba passed away.

Pumba is the latest addition to the Zulu tribe. A purebred rascal, he is mama’s baby.
Possibly our most photogenic pup yet, he has personality for days! We are always laughing at some quirky new antic he pulls.
He is feisty beyond his age but a very quick learner.

Best of , the rule the day and rules the day.
This scene is a daily occurrence when I put the chickens away for the night and let out the big dogs. It’s a shocking scene for the uninitiated. Probably one source of the reputation all three of them have in the neighborhood.

Some are tougher than others. It’s always good to have a cheering squad at the end of any hot one though.
The are always thrilled to see Shaka anytime she comes home. They don’t understand exhaustion, only mobbing their buddy at the gate.

From the beginning, Shaka wanted to be right where I was, no matter what I was doing. Mostly she was sleeping but she wanted to be right there 😀
Even now she keeps a watchful eye on my projects, when she’s not napping. On good days she brings Esperanza Daye Smucker along too 😀
