What do we do with training horses when the weather is cold? They still get worked with. I make sure to keep sessions shorter so they don't get too warm though. My rule is if it hurts me to breathe, it hurts them. Today our barn kept about 10 to 15 degrees warm so it really wasn't too bad. The horses usually enjoy coming in to get a break from outside and I like to think they enjoy moving their bodies too. Especially the really young energetic ones. Teddy very much enjoyed his ride today. Contact Christina if interested in Spring lessons, they start in March.

The horses looked extra cute this morning, all napping. Today isn't too bad yet with the cold. It feels warmer than I thought it would. Spring will be here before you know it. If you are interested in Spring lessons let me know. They start in March.

Mom and I braved the wind this past weekend to head up to Bismark for some lessons from Karla and Mimi Stanley. It was good timing for checking in on our winter homework and getting some new things to work on. Remember everyone needs lessons even those who also teach. One of my favorite parts about lessons is that I am able to use the things I learn with my own students too so everyone benefits from them. Harry and Ghazi were both good students.

Schleese will be back towards the end of April for saddle fittings. We love our custom saddles both for riders and for our horses. Horses are athletes so it is important to adjust their saddles a couple times a year as they change physically. Schleese is one of the only saddle companies that designs saddles specifically for the women pelvis. Contact Christina with questions or if you want to sign up for an assessment.

Just me and the two senior horses. It's a little cold today but all the horses are doing well. On the extra cold days like today we keep the horse work pretty light and tend to do things like clean tack and organize things.

Winter is a great time to work on learning new skills. I feel in our area people who work thru the winter months are able to accomplish really cool things and goals. Ghazi and I were able to have two really good clinics before winter to get a lot of homework. We are successfully schooling flying changes and canter half pass. I can't wait to see where we end up when winter ends, being that we still have a few months. It is important to remember progress is not always linear. The important thing is to keep putting in the work and time and it will pay off.

We are always trying to improve things at the barn. One of our biggest tasks has been plugging holes in walls and the roof. Our latest hole was an inch gap above our big arena door. Zorbie is a great supervisor for when Dad is on the ladder.

No lessons this week thru January 2nd. For our last week of lessons before break I was trying to be creative and festive with my pattern. So I set up a Christmas tree pattern with cones.

Training horses is an interesting job. No two days are alike. Each horse needs an individualized plan as they each have different needs and different learning styles. This is Teddy our up and coming lesson horse. Initially he seemed like a very relaxed fellow but has had some stumbling blocks in his training. I came to the understanding that he actually was a fairly nervous horse that needed slow deliberate steps to help build confidence. Yesterday he had a big first step in becoming ready for other people and had his first canters. All the prep work I've been doing made this a stress free activity for him, and he stayed nice and relaxed. We are excited to see all the things he will accomplish!

Having happy lesson horses is important to us. One way we make sure they stay in top shape and happy is by getting them bodywork done regularly. Last week we had Doctor Heather out from Groton to do chiropractic and acupuncture on a couple of the lesson horses. They are all feeling great now.

Ritz is always up for new things. He got his first mini bath last week. He loved trying to eat the hose but didn't love the water so much when it was on him.
