Opossum Fun facts

The female usually gives birth to 18 to 25 babies, each smaller than a honeybee. The mother has only 13 ni***es so if a baby doesn't latch on to one, it will not survive. The lucky survivors stay attached for 50 to 70 days.

For the next few months, raccoons all over the country will be desperately looking for places to have their young. If there’s an opening that allows a mother-to-be into an attic, she will understandably think that this warm, dry shelter is a perfect place to raise her new babies.

But what happens when the homeowner finds her and calls a pest control company? In some states, the mother and kits might be moved to a protected area, but in others— including Tennessee— wildlife removal companies are required to euthanize any raccoon trapped as a “nuisance.” The ”lucky” ones are gassed to death, while the rest die of overheating and dehydration in hot trucks.

There is a better way. Before baby season arrives, please make sure your attics and crawlspaces can’t be accessed by wildlife. If a mother somehow makes her home in your attic despite your best efforts, you can scare her away using a combination of bright lights, loud noises, and strong smells— such as a radio, a rag soaked in ammonia, and a strobe light. It may take her a few days to leave, but she and the kits will eventually be on their way.

Rabbits, including our own native cottontails, actually have an amazing adaptation that keeps them from breeding uncontrollably. Rabbits can conceive a pregnancy at any time, but the rabbit’s body actually chooses whether or not to give birth. If there’s an unexpected problem like a lot of predators, a major cold snap, an illness, or starvation, a female rabbit will actually absorb unborn kits back into her body. She will get pregnant again when times are safer and healthier.

Cuteness overload!!!!!!

Sandy (in the first pic) mask looks like its in a heart shapes!! All babies around here are 12 wks and older and eating solids very well! Marlie & Sandy are the youngest. They were reluctant at first with solids but today they ate a full breakfast including eggs (their new fav)!! They are the only ones not in outside pens yet but are on their way soon!

The six bigger babies outside are doing great, they've have adjusted to outside life and love playing in their kiddy pools!

I'm so happy to learn this species this season! They are so smart and very funny! I'm absolutely in love with these heart bandits!!! đź’™

Donations are always appreciated as we care for wildlife in the Big Country!

First day with Miss Marlie the raccoon! She is getting used to her new way of feeding, which is tube feeding. Since baby raccoons aspirate so easy it has been advised to tube them until eyes are open by a permitted wildlife rehabilitator who specializes in raccoons. She has raised a bunch of babies so I take her word for it! She is who will be advising me every step of the way! Im so excited to embark this journey with these amazingly intelligent creatures!!!!!

My little babies are they only ones still on formula but not nursing! They are also eating solids and rodent blocks just still need extra nutrients! Jack is now 9 weeks old, Jill is 7 weeks and I believe Dolce is 9-10 weeks but not going by his weight due to him being so skinny & dehydrated! He's gaining weight as well he was 85g at intake 4 days ago now he weighs125 g!
Makes my rehabber heart happy seeing my babies growing!!!

For anyone is adding how many babies up: We now have 12 baby squirrels, 8 cottontails & 4 opossums in our care at Heartstrings! That's 24 babies!! Not to mention we are still feeding 6 squirrels that have been released every other day or so. Want them to forge on their own thats why we space days out! Any donations would be greatly appreciated as we feed this growing brood!!!
