Blood Dog Training / Tracking

Blood Dog Training / Tracking Blood Trailing / Tracking Courses available in a 4 week program
(3)

Training tracking dogs since 1983, we provide a service that teaches the dog to locate the scent of whatever is indicated to them. Our courses are designed to help the dog understand what is desired of him while having fun doing it. Although many skeptics will profess that a dog cannot be trained in 4 weeks, we have been providing this service for a very long time, and, with great success

AS A SIDEBAR.
I see a lot of praise given to the dogs that are out there tracking and finding wounded deer.
I think what most of you are missing is that the dog is having a good time, doing what he loves. The handler, on the other hand, is working their ass off.
Handlers have to have the capacity to read their dog and understand if they are tracking or window shopping, be the watchful eye that nothing happens to the dog while he's working, ensure that they, themselves, aren't injured and be in as good of conditioning as their loyal tracking dog.
This is not meant to offend anyone, but to point out that the dog and handler are a team. It takes both of them.
So, let me THANK every dog/handler team, whether you're Search and Rescue, Blood Tracking, or serving the public.
Thank you for your dedication to this art.

I get lots of call asking me what the best breed is for tracking.
Breeds from the Working, Hunting, and Herding groups work best. Any dog with an elongated nose has the capacity and propensity to perform the job.
Secondly, choose a dog that you like. You have to live with it, so you should like the dog.

Okay, after being beaten up about hunting here is my side of this maylay.
I have not hunted ever since coming home for my Military Obligation.
It’s my choice. Can I hunt? Probably better than some of those running around in the woods.
I am a Dog Trainer. You don’t have to hunt to train a dog.
After all, Bomb Detection dogs aren’t handled by Bomb Dog Trainers, (I do those as well), so, those saying I don’t know what I’m doing simply because I don’t hunt is about as stupid a statement as I have ever had to address.
I am Certified by the Criminal District Courts of New Orleans as an Expert in the fields of Canine Training and Tracking.

Scent training is not rocket science. However, it does require some knowledge of scent, where it occurs, how it is transmitted, and how weather affects it.
Knowing how scent reacts to certain weather conditions and being able to understand the actions of your dog (body language) is all it really takes.
Oh, there is also a small part of a beginner's training that requires the trainer to obtain the dog's interest.
That's It!

The Tracking Handler’s Biggest Mistake
The biggest problem I see with Tracking Handlers is that they fail to learn how to read their dog’s body language. This is probably more important than teaching it to follow a track.
WHY; because you have no idea if your dog is tracking, trailing, air-scenting, or Window Shopping.
Regardless of whether you have trained your own dog, or if it was trained by a professional, you must learn the idiosyncrasies of your dog. A trainer may say, “when the left ear points North, and the Right ear is pointing East; he’s on it.” Then when you begin working the dog you’re just looking at ears and nothing else.
Most dog handlers are in such a frenzy to find the deer that they’re looking ahead of the dog, instead of paying attention to the dog. Finding the deer should be like shooting a gun.
You were taught, focus on the sight, exhale, hold your breath, and squeeze the trigger. Let the BOOM be a surprise. If you were not taught to shoot in this manner, it explains a lot.
The same holds true for your dog. Watch what the dog is doing so that you understand him, and let finding the deer be a surprise.

The key to our training method is that we focus on scent. Many are asking about sheds. When training is completed in 4 weeks, your dog will find your wounded deer, sheds, lost hunter, etc. as long as you give him a reliable scent to follow.
We are located in Abita Springs, LA.

Blood Dog Training

Throughout this summer, we have received numerous calls inquiring about our training. Many are surprised that we do not use blood, but encourage the dogs to focus on scent. Scent is the single unique source of each individual animal, and the dogs that we have trained have attained a 98% recovery rate.
If you’re interested in having your dog trained, we are currently booking for November.
Course takes 4 weeks to complete and includes harness and long line, with printed instructions and demonstration upon pick up.
Cost of entire boarding and training is $1500.
We also offer Obedience training at an additional charge.
Call 985 892 6773 to inquire or schedule.

For those handler who believe there must be blood in order to track, consider this.
When laying a blood trail YOU, or someone, has to walk out there to place the blood. You’re laying a trail of scent. Since a dog can identify and categorize 10K scents in one sniff, what makes you think that he isn’t using the scent trail left behind?
In a dog’s world, it’s just a matter of eliminating what isn’t persistent or consistent.

Lost Hunters
I remember a time when my phone would ring and we were off to find a lost hunter.
Those of you who are working with tracking (blood trailing) dogs are at an advantage and play a very important role in safety and saving lives.
If properly trained on scent instead of blood spatters, your working dog can be on the scene and locate that missing hunter much quicker than waiting for the Police and their dogs. Time can be of the essence in these situations, and you’re on the scene already.
When training your deer dogs, consider scent training. It works.

I’ve received a lot of calls about training dogs to find deer sheds.
Work your dog on a variety of different sheds. I don’t know what the common scent is, but he will learn and identify the common scent within the sheds. Once taught, he will begin performing the search in the same manner as a narcotics trained dog.

The reason why I NEVER use PUPPY FOODS.

As stated in most advertisements, “Puppy foods are formulated to aid in the growth of your puppy.” To me, that’s a warning sign. Why would I want to produce more growth than normal? Puppies will grow into adults in a normal fashion without aid of an outside agent. It’s a part of life. So why would I want to accelerate their growth?
Let me explain my position. If the food is formulated to aid in the growth of your puppy, then that is a reference to there being ingredients that will enhance the growth of bone. The long bones that are between each joint are hollow, thinner and cylindrically shaped, whereas the joints or knuckles are a more dense mass. Because the long bones are thinner, they experience growth more rapidly, placing pressure within the joints, which are growing at a significantly slower rate.
The effects of this can often be seen in a puppy that will limp for a awhile on one leg, then another, then another, and is diagnosed by your veterinarian as Panosteitis.
By feeding your puppies a formula to stimulate growth, you are forcing the long bones to apply unnecessary pressure within the joints. This pressure can cause an unwanted friction in the joints, leading to inflammation, and in time, arthritis, degenerative joint disease, and/or dysplasia.
Providing growth formulas to puppies is very similar to providing growth hormones to humans. There is more harm than good that comes from additional hormones in humans, and it is my belief that puppy foods will cause the same reactions.
So why is puppy food promoted? It is manufactured and promoted for the sole purpose of an increased profit for the food manufacturer. There are manufacturers, nutritionists, veterinarians, and other breeders who may disagree, and that’s their prerogative, but in the last 28 years since I stopped using puppy food, I have not had one case of hip dysplasia occur in the dogs within my kennel. To me that speaks volumes of the means and methods by which I’m producing dogs.

I recently sent out an email to various clients asking how their dogs were doing since returning from training. Some of these were returned months earlier.
One client did all but climb through the internet to tell me that after spending all that money to have his dog trained to track, that it was gun shy.
He all but called me a swindler because I didn’t gun test his dog. I DON’T TRAIN GUN DOGS. I train TRACKING DOGS.
He insisted that when his dog sees his gun he runs, and that the reason his dog was gun shy was created by me. HOW?
We had thunder storms here and the dogs are all outdoors, but I have no control over that. The dogs never see a gun, so how did the dog relate visually to a gun?
The reason for this post is to simply say,
I TRAIN TRACKING DOGS.
If you want your dog gun tested, then you should find someone that performs that task.
If you want your trained to track….
I’M YOUR MAN.
