Woohoo! Two more have joined the party and laid their first egg today!!! Meet Beatrice (Welsummer) and Bonnie (Ancona). Beatrice lays the “red” brown speckled eggs and Bonnie lays white. The dream of having that rainbow basket is getting closer and closer to becoming reality. To say I’m egg-cited is an understatement! Love these girls of mine. ☺️❤️🐓

Welcome home to me! Been out of the country for just over a week, both fearing and hoping The Sweet 16 girls would begin laying those first eggs. Well, they must have known how much I wanted to be the one to find them because tonight’s haul is the largest I’ve had thus far. The grand total: 11!

Meet Gertrude and Fawkes. They’re my Ameracaunas and the first of The Sweet 16 to lay. What color do they lay? So glad you asked. 😜 The answer: Blue!! My dream of that rainbow basket is getting closer and closer to becoming a reality. So egg-cited for the rest to join in on paying rent…I mean the fun. 😏🤣🥰

And just like that, all 9 of my layers are laying! It’s been a long time in coming, but it was worth the wait! Now the next phase of waiting has begun for my Sweet 16 clutch to come of age and lay their first eggs. I don’t think this will ever get old; regardless how long I do this and how many chickens I have.

It’s Saturday and time to get spoiled! Starting the weekend off right with some well deserved treats. Who doesn’t love a bit of watermelon, sardines, and cottage cheese in the morning? I promise you these chickens (and dogs) eat better than I do. 😂😂

A little photo dump of how the weekend was spent. We’re getting closer and closer to The Sweet 16 being allowed to free range completely unsupervised! The Fab 5 and The Littles clutch ladies are still keeping the younger ones on their toes and letting them know just who it is that’s in charge; and it’s not the two-legged, featherless wonder that brings food and treats. 😂 Why did it take me so long to jump into the chicken mom life!?

Sweet 16 had an afternoon of supervised free range foraging. Something tells me they thoroughly enjoyed getting to search for bugs and explore the yard. The Fab 5 and Littles, although quick to establish pecking order, were more interested in foraging than interacting with their new friends (something the Sweet 16 seemed okay with). 😅 If only I could spend every day like this.

The Sweet 16 has moved into their permanent housing outside. It’s a bitter-sweet moment. Hard to believe they’re already old enough to go outside permanently. Can’t help but feel like they’re still those cute little fluff balls I picked up from the post office a little over a couple months ago. They seem to be enjoying all the fresh air, digging for bugs, extra room, and (some of them) antagonizing the older girls. 😅 It will be a few more weeks until they’ll be allowed to have supervised free range foraging time; but, for now, it’s fun to watch them explore their new environment. 🥰

Someone has decided to start pulling her weight and paying rent. Wild thang, Kya, has laid her first egg!!! By far, the most vocal of the bunch when singing her egg laying song; but, who’s complaining when you now have two blue eggs in the daily gathering? 😜☺️ Two down; two more to go!! love my lovely ladies!

Meet Agatha. Self-proclaimed head hen of the Sweet 16 clutch and definitely the feistiest of the bunch. Her calm state when being held is a trap carefully laid to lull you into a false sense of security. Fearless of all foes, big or small, and a finger annihilating master. Leave your hand unattended for more than a second while cleaning, and you’re in for a peck of pure unfiltered rebellious sass. Chicken teenagers…they’re real. 😜🐔❤️🤣

Update: I was wrong. (Shocker, I know) It was not Kya; it was Petunia who laid the first blue egg. These girls keep me on my toes…

This is not a drill!! It’s happening!! After weeks of waiting in eager anticipation, and occasional threats 😜🤣, we have our FIRST BLUE EGG!!! Not 100% certain if it was Petunia or Kya, but my assumption is Kya as I found this little gem outside of the coop. 🤦🏽‍♀️At least she was close, right? 😅 Now just 3 more girls left in the Littles clutch until we’re in full swing! These girls are from and I would HIGHLY recommend them if you’re looking to add some variety to your egg basket and flock. They have a forever customer from me. 🥰 🐣

The Sweet 16 clutch is in full tween stage (trading their fluff for real feathers) and are now old enough to be slowly introduced to fruits, veggies, and worms. They are growing too fast! It’s already time to enlarge the brooder space and I’m trying to be okay with it. 😵‍💫😢😂 I’m in love with being a chicken mom. 🐥🐔❤️

No matter if you have four legs or two, fur or feathers, when housekeeping is in progress, there’s always one who has to micromanage everything you’re doing. Excuse you, Henrietta. I do believe I can handle this task without the constant squawking. 🙄🤷🏽‍♀️😂😂😂

Meal time for the littles!! Every couple of days they get a special serving of organic grower mash. Doesn’t look like they like it, but they are growing!! 🤪😂 Patterns are beginning to show on wing tips and tails and personalities are emerging. Quite a fun, lively little bunch of chickadees. Everyone has made it through Week 1; just 5 more before they can begin to spend supervised time outside exploring and getting introduced to the older hens. Fun times are coming!! 🐥❤️🥰

The last additions have arrived!! We are at full capacity…for now. 😆 Unfortunately, two baby chicks were lost, but the others are thriving and I ended up with an unexpected extra chick. They are the most adorable little fluff balls I ever did see and I am excited to watch them grow! Can’t wait to start seeing their personalities emerge. This girl is loving the chicken mom life!

Egg-citing things are happening here at the burb farmstead!! We are growing!! First batch of baby chicks has arrived and the struggle of not spending every minute with them is real. Looking forward to the remaining chicks to arrive. This group is from Meyer Hatchery and I highly recommend giving them a gander. My experience with them has been nothing less than stellar! It helps that the chicks are insanely adorable. 😜

We’ve got eggs!! The Fab 5 are hard at work keeping a steady supply ready for purchase. These are organic, free-range, pasture (back yard) raised, farm fresh eggs from the boujee-est hens in Cherokee County. I hear they’re doing a wonderful job of gifting double yolks here and there. 😉 If anyone is in need of eggs, let me know!!

Happy news here on the burb farmstead! All 5 of the original clutch are laying!! Meet Ms. Greta. She’s the smallest of the older group and the last to lay, but is laying regular sized eggs from the start. I’m one happy Mother Hen! ❤️🐔🥚

Meet Winnifred…the Rockstar of the flock. First to lay and first to produce a double yolk. Guess who’s getting extra worms for dinner tonight!! This chicken adventure is way more rewarding than I initially thought it would be. Love these little cluckers! ❤️🐔🥰

Meet Dottie…aka Trouble. I have been on these girls about free loading and rebelliously refusing to contribute to the egg laying operation. (All except the goodest girl Winnifred) Well, this morning, by pure chance, I discovered that she has been HIDING her eggs from me behind my AC Unit!!! Found 3 decent sized eggs sitting there just waiting to be gathered. I would like to point out that these chickens are living the life of insane luxury with FOUR nesting boxes; and yet, for some inexplicable reason, this nasty heifer has decided to lay her eggs where I have to hunt for them! She is lucky I love her too much to follow through on my threats to ship her to the farm of no return. Chickens…I tell ya.

In July, we grew by 4 bringing us to a total of 9 hens!! (Discovered two of my original 7 were roosters. 😳) Meet Petunia, Kya, Constance, and Clover. They are 7 weeks younger than my initial clutch, so it will be a while yet before we start seeing eggs; but, welcome to your new home little ladies! Happy to have these sweet new chicks. Looking forward to those first eggs. 🐥🐔❤️🥚🥰

I have been a dog mom since 2007. This Easter my fur mom status expanded into the feathered category. I officially became a Mother Hen and started my dive into the world of all things fowl with 7 sweet little velociraptors. It’s been so fun watching them grow and learn to trust me. Who knew caving into my inner country girl would be so fun! 🥰🥰
