We have to consider all the factors that affect our dog’s training; such as the relationship, environment, clarity, etc. If there is an area that is suffering so will the rest. So how do you fix it? Get out of the mindset that obedience will fix it, and prioritize their behavior and mindset. For example, if my dog is struggling to heel I need to look at their behavior walking on a loose leash to understand why. 🌧️Rainy Day Fun with Bodhi🌧️ Bodhi needed some extra work on his training with distractions, but on a rainy day they can be hard to find outside so we made our own! Bodhi loves balls so this took a lot of restraint on his part, but he did super well! We practiced all of his obedience and task training with the goal of him ignoring the balls on the ground. When training we aim for the dog to successful in every rep, but how will the dog understand what is considered wrong for the command? Once we are sure they understand what is right and how to gain the reward. We take it back to how we initially taught the behavior, but put them in a challenging starting position. Ruben is working on having straighter fronts, so I brought out the position box and stood in front of it as I did when he was first taught the position. But instead of placing him in front of the box and having him come straight to the front, I place him awkwardly then give the command to reinforce straightening his whole body in front of me. He understands what he is meant to do on the position box so it gives me the advantage of not having to help him with verbal or physical cues. As you can see in the end he was able to self correct his positioning to be straight in front of me. This is the first step in having consistent positioning, he is aware of what's wrong and will adjust himself without any assistance. 🐾Teaching VS Training🐾 The biggest mistake owners make when training their dog is rushing the teaching stage before the dog has a clear understanding of the end goal. This makes the dogs confused and the owners annoyed because their dog won’t listen to the command. Teaching a dog involves developing concepts and understanding, like explaining the meaning of “sit” or “stay.” I think of it as explaining the definition of the command to the dog. Training, on the other hand, is the repetitive practice and reinforcement of those commands, ensuring the dog reliably performs them on cue. This is maintenance that is necessary to keep the precision of everything taught. Why do we focus our training on behavior over obedience? Behaviors are expectations that I expect no matter what is happening, they do not have strict rules but are things I expect every day. This means I use much less commands, rewards, and corrections once they’re instilled in the dog. By using less commands, the dogs gain more confidence, freedom, and trust in me. This also allows me to have more meaning behind every command when they are used. And the most important part is that the dogs get to enjoy the walk as they choose. Sniffing, running, observing, or anything else they like to do. For example, Luka loves chasing squirrels so I allow him if no one is near by, but if someone is he will respect my decision to leave it alone. Especially since he knows he will be allowed when it is okay to do so. Boomer has completed his 14 Day Board and Train with us, so here is a video going over all that he has learned! We are so sad to see Boomer leave but are so happy to see that his family gets to enjoy and grow with Boomer and new obedience! Boomer is only 4 months and was able to learn so much in such a little time! We focused mostly on behaviors such as engagement and trust, which made all the obedience so easy for him to understand. The behaviors he learned are going to help him as his family begins to add or erase things that I’ve done with him, he’ll be able to understand why he’s getting rewarded or corrected and most importantly how to continue doing behaviors that are rewarded. He was such a fun dog to train with and we loved his personality more than anything; we can’t wait to see the things he begins to do as he grows up! Mia worked on her targeting at the park and she did super well! She was distracted in the beginning but quickly realized what she was supposed to do. She has even learned how to retrieve it which will be very helpful down the line!
Cayenne is learning what leash pressure means with minimal treat luring.
The goal is for him to understand when there is upwards pressure to sit, downward pressure to lay down, and forward pressure to stand or follow the pressure. He has done very well with this, we originally used his verbal commands along with this but now are separating the two and he is learning quickly!
Lennox is here for day school to work on her food aggression, we used her breakfast to teach her that when my hand goes near her bowl it’s a positive thing instead of a negative! She did super with showing no aggression but now we will start to build her confidence so that she is comfortable with this and happier about people approaching her food!
