Narcissists love to build a reputation for being “good people.” They’ll talk about kindness while gossiping about others, post about empathy while secretly punishing anyone who outshines them, and perform humility just long enough to win admiration. It’s never about goodness — it’s about image management.

Their “goodness” is a costume, stitched together with compliments they’ve stolen and apologies they never meant. It’s their favorite disguise — the “I’m not like those toxic people” act. But the truth is, every ounce of their false purity depends on someone else being cast as the villain. Usually you.

They’ll convince the world they’re the calm, rational one while you’re “emotional.” They’ll talk about forgiveness while holding grudges for eternity. They’ll donate, volunteer, or publicly support a cause — not because they care, but because it keeps their mask polished. And when that mask slips? They scramble to adjust it, blaming you for the reveal.

You’ll notice it in subtle ways — the way they need an audience for every act of “kindness,” or how they weaponize words like “integrity” and “loyalty” while breaking both behind closed doors. To them, morality is theater. They perform sincerity until it stops getting applause.

That’s why survivors often struggle to explain the abuse. The narcissist’s costume is so convincing that even their lies sound noble. They play both victim and hero, leaving you cast as the ungrateful one who “misunderstood their heart.”

But here’s the truth: genuinely good people don’t need to announce it. Their actions speak in quiet consistency, not curated perfection. You’ll never need to squint to see their decency — it’s effortless, not rehearsed.

So if you’re healing from someone who made you question your own goodness, remember this: wolves don’t stop being wolves because they look soft in wool. You’re not bitter for seeing through them — you’re just no longer blind.
