Mordecai, the Sulcata tortoise

It was a heartbreaking decision to make. We knew that we weren't really equipped to own a super reptile like our Mordecai. He needed a home that would be much better suited for him than we could provide . . . so Mordecai is on his way to his new home at the Tickled Pink Petting Zoo in northeast Alabama. You can follow his new adventures there. We love you Mordecai, you brightened our lives, and we will cherish our memories of our lives together.

One of the challenges we accept when rearing a growing tortoise is keeping up with his housing needs. This winter we discovered he had outgrown his trashcan "cave" so today I invented a roomier "cave" cobbled together with an old planter box, some plastic plant trays and lots of duct tape. He is all snuggled in tonight and now he has room to turn around or stretch out if he wants.

One of Bob's clients sent home some turnip greens for Mordecai. He was asleep when we put them in his habitat. He smelled them ... got up ... and engorged himself. Then went back to bed.

We have no idea of the exact date our Mordecai hatched from his little egg so we chose December 1st as his birthday. We were just a little late celebrating this year. I just love the look on his face as his candle burned down to an unrecognizable blob, waiting for him to taste his birthday treat. He waited until the candle went completely out before diving into his persimmon and clover treat. We also weighed and measured him--14 pounds and 16 3/4 inches! For a sulcata that is pretty diminutive.

Mordecai doesn't want to leave his "cave" on cold, gloomy mornings. We brought him indoors today, he seemed thankful.

It's been three months of an outdoor summer for Mordecai. Today we measured his growth. When I got him out to measure him, I discovered that we need to widen the entrance to his knew "cave." He is now 16.25 inches long and 13 pounds. His gender is still not definite but its looking like we "chose" the right one. Only time will tell.

Mordecai has grown so much this summer that he outgrew his "trash can" cave. We just created a new cave for him. Can you guess what it is made from? We will be weighing and measuring soon to discover just exactly how much our guy has grown.

Mordecai is really growing this summer! He now weighs 10.4lb (a four month gain of 2 1/2 lbs) and measures out at 15.25 inches (a four month gain of 1 1/4"). He loves living outdoors and getting treats from his mammal nephew.
