San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society The San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter. Donations of time, talent, money and supplies are greatly appreciated.

Over the past 23 years the caring, devoted people of this all volunteer organization have rescued and found loving homes for over 10,000 homeless dogs and cats. The San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society is the largest animal welfare organization in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Since 2000, with minimal resources, the SLVAWS has rescued and found homes for over, 10,000 abandoned, abused, needy,

or suffering creatures. The Society's mission is to improve the well-being of animals in the San Luis Valley, the poorest region of Colorado, through rescue efforts, educational programs, and regularly scheduled spay/neuter clinics. The SLVAWS networks with shelters across Colorado and northern New Mexico to rescue animals that would otherwise be euthanized. In 2006, Aileen and Frank Peek mortgaged their home to purchase the current Battle Mountain shelter facility. The shelter buildings still need additional retrofitting to help reduce the huge utility costs and to accommodate more animals. Thanks to generous grants from the Animal Assistance Foundation in Denver, the SLVAWS dogs are housed in state of the art Mason kennels. Due to a shortage of animal adopters in the San Luis Valley, pet adoption fairs are held each Saturday in Colorado Springs to take advantage of the much larger pool of potential adopters. Every Saturday, Aileen and a driver endure a sometimes grueling 22-hour day, as they leave before dawn and return sometimes after midnight if they have a van breakdown. As with all animal welfare organizations, the obstacles are great, but the remote, rural shelter location of the SLVAWS increases the challenges. Some of the greatest challenges include:
• Distance to veterinary care
• Difficulty hosting fundraisers in a high poverty region
• Lack of shelter Internet access makes communication harder
• Constant need to educate the local population on spay/neuter and humane treatment of animals
• Lack of support from the local community
• Lack of reliable labor pool
• Few adoptions at the shelter facility
• Lack of widespread name recognition

The SLVAWS is primarily funded through adoption fees. For each animal the Society places in a loving, permanent home, another animal can be rescued. The Society's team is especially grateful for veterinary assistance and donations of veterinary supplies. For more information, please contact the San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society as follows:

Thanks to the Ch. 13 KRDO broadcast below, Santa heard Skooter's wish for a home after being with us over a year. He will be spoiled by these nice young men Yodie, Chewey, and Woogie and their dad Ben, who were all smitten with Skooter. Mom was working. Skooter will play with their 4 year old girl dog who looks similar to his playmate Maybelline. Below is Frankie who owns Frank's Catering saying goodbye to Skooter. Frankie brings burger patties for all the adoption fair dogs every Saturday.

Whistles and her 2 boys were fortunate to go home from Petco within hours of each other. Mom would not have to go back to the shelter, alone, missing her puppies. Thank you Megan and Matt, taking Walker and Weston home together. Thank you Emily for giving Whistles a wonderful home where she can stay at home while you work for an insurance company at home.

Seven year old Blizzard goes home with Rick and his family. He is one happy pup now. He was abandoned when his family's home burned down. They took the other dogs but left him. He was so sad and howled. We thank the neighbor who fed him for many days and then called us. Please see photos in the next post. We couldn't add the still shots with the video.

This is Skooter. I am sad to say that Skooter has been in a shelter since he was a puppy. 😢 He was the last of a litter of puppies that was at the shelter. He has been at the shelter for over 100 weeks. No puppy should have to grow in a shelter! He is so sweet, medium sized, and has the cutest underbite. Would you help to find Skooter a home? Please share this post to see if we can’t find him a home!🏠He will be at the Petco 5020 N. Nevada Ave. this Saturday 12/21 10:00-3:00. Please stop by and check him out yourself! He just loves people!

The San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society is bringing Skooter and other dogs available for adoption! We would love if stop and meet the dogs!😍🐕

Please bring me Home for the Holidays. My name is Wilson. I am 9 years old. One of the volunteers said this about me:
"This boy is a gem in the rough. Give him one trip around the sun, with consistent good (smelly) food (as with men, Love goes through the stomach) and he'll smile again."
You might call me a loving couch potato. I don't need a lot of exercise, just a lot of belly rubs. I would like a quiet home with no other animals and no children. I have been at the shelter/sanctuary for over a year. I was abandoned with 2 other dogs when the owner left the home, perhaps to be put into a senior health facility. We were all very thin. My sister could barely stand up. Finally some nice people came by and took us to the shelter.
