San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society The San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter. Donations of time, talent, money and supplies are greatly appreciated.

Over the past 23 years the caring, devoted people of this all volunteer organization have rescued and found loving homes for over 10,000 homeless dogs and cats. The San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society is the largest animal welfare organization in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Since 2000, with minimal resources, the SLVAWS has rescued and found homes for over, 10,000 abandoned, abused, needy,

or suffering creatures. The Society's mission is to improve the well-being of animals in the San Luis Valley, the poorest region of Colorado, through rescue efforts, educational programs, and regularly scheduled spay/neuter clinics. The SLVAWS networks with shelters across Colorado and northern New Mexico to rescue animals that would otherwise be euthanized. In 2006, Aileen and Frank Peek mortgaged their home to purchase the current Battle Mountain shelter facility. The shelter buildings still need additional retrofitting to help reduce the huge utility costs and to accommodate more animals. Thanks to generous grants from the Animal Assistance Foundation in Denver, the SLVAWS dogs are housed in state of the art Mason kennels. Due to a shortage of animal adopters in the San Luis Valley, pet adoption fairs are held each Saturday in Colorado Springs to take advantage of the much larger pool of potential adopters. Every Saturday, Aileen and a driver endure a sometimes grueling 22-hour day, as they leave before dawn and return sometimes after midnight if they have a van breakdown. As with all animal welfare organizations, the obstacles are great, but the remote, rural shelter location of the SLVAWS increases the challenges. Some of the greatest challenges include:
• Distance to veterinary care
• Difficulty hosting fundraisers in a high poverty region
• Lack of shelter Internet access makes communication harder
• Constant need to educate the local population on spay/neuter and humane treatment of animals
• Lack of support from the local community
• Lack of reliable labor pool
• Few adoptions at the shelter facility
• Lack of widespread name recognition

The SLVAWS is primarily funded through adoption fees. For each animal the Society places in a loving, permanent home, another animal can be rescued. The Society's team is especially grateful for veterinary assistance and donations of veterinary supplies. For more information, please contact the San Luis Valley Animal Welfare Society as follows:

We are very grateful for the overwhelming response to our need for larger doggie coats. Our short-haired doggies will be much warmer now so they can spend more time running outside. Thank you, everyone! Thank you, Larson Family for the pink and purple ones with harnesses. Martha, Duke loves his sweater. F***y is cozy in her new red coat.❤️❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾

It’s Brandi’s world, and we’re just living in it. Brandi is a typical husky who likes to run the show with both her people and her fellow dogs. Think that YOU’RE bringing BRANDI on a walk? Wrong, BRANDI is bringing YOU on a walk. Other than her bossiness (she prefers the words confident and goal-oriented), Brandi really is a sweet pup who would be thrilled to come home with you.

She loves to play with humans with lots of energy. She will not jump your fence. Suffered a spinal injury and cannot jump down from a higher place or step. She is affectionate, brave, dignified, funny, gentle, independent, intelligent. She is treated by a chiropracter once or twice a year. No cats please.

Happy Valentine's Day; ❤️Happy Birthday to our new babies born on Valentine's Day! 🐾🐾🐾 NO PHOTOS YET. Stray mom came in pregnant. Mom is still unapproachable. We didn't know what s*x she was or the dog who came in with her. But we found out a few weeks later as she grew larger. We thought the white dog was possibly a male. Wrong. She is also growing larger. Soon there will be another litter. First cousins.

The very cold weather & wind are here. We are in desperate need of ###xl and other large sizes so that our doggies can spend more time outside. We just rescued "Duke." He is very thin. He loves to be outside, runs in circles stands up to give you kisses. Available for adoption in a few weeks. We can accept deliveries at 23681 Rito Seco Rd., San Luis, CO, 81152, or 76 El Rio Drive, Alamosa, CO 81101. The photo of the coat on the left is just an example of what we need, not necessarily that vendor.

PLEASE HELP US TO PASS THIS BILL. THE INFORMATION BELOW IS FROM NO KILL COLORADO. Colorado’s Rural Shelters & Rescues Need Your Help! 🚨

Right now, small, underfunded shelters, rescues, and spay/neuter organizations across Colorado are struggling—and the system isn't set up to help them. But we have a chance to fix that.

HB 25-1137 just passed its first major hurdle with an 8-4 win in committee. Now, it’s moving fast—with a second reading in the House TOMORROW!

📢 This bill would finally give rural shelters, rescues, and spay/neuter groups access to $1 million in annual funding—money they desperately need for lifesaving programs, including TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) initiatives to humanely manage cat populations. But we need your help to get it passed!

💥 What you can do right now:
✅ Call or email your representative and tell them to vote YES on HB 25-1137
✅ Tag & share this with friends who care about saving animals
✅ Find your rep here: https://leg.colorado.gov/find-my-legislator

This is about fixing a broken system and getting resources to the shelters and rescues that need them most. No Kill Colorado gets ZERO funds from this—we’re fighting for YOU.

Time is short. Make your voice heard NOW! 🐾💙 See less

UPDATE: YES, THEY HAVE BEEN SAVED! THEY WILL GET A HOME TOGETHER. [email protected]: Chloe and Lola are scheduled for EUTHANASIA ON MONDAY. They are in southern Colorado, and below is a plea from the local volunteer advocating to save their lives.

“Meet these two young beautiful sisters—Lola and Chloe—who are in desperate need of a second chance.

Sadly, they are scheduled for euthanasia unless someone with experience with the Great Pyrenees breed steps forward to save them.

They lived on a ranch but were surrendered because they wandered off and killed chickens.

Both of these gentle souls have had tough starts, and now they need someone with the time, patience, and knowledge to help them adjust to a loving home.

If you have experience with this majestic, independent breed, you could be the perfect fit!

Lola and Chloe are both a little over a year old.

Lola is sweet but still very shy and learning how to trust people.

Chloe is more outgoing, loves to cuddle, and does really well on a leash. They are both fixed and up to date on their vaccinations.

🐾 What they need:

Someone familiar with the Great Pyrenees temperament (they are loyal, protective, and sometimes a little independent)

Time to help them adjust to a new environment.

Patience and understanding as they settle into their new lives.

These girls have so much love to give—they just need the right person to give them a chance. 💖

If you or someone you know can offer them the safe, loving home they deserve, please reach out ASAP! Time is running out for these sweet girls. 🐶💕

Please comment and share to help Lola and Chloe.”

We would call you directly and identify ourselves as a volunteer or the director of the shelter. Please do not donate any money via a phone. We do not solicit for funds that way. We are CANCELING our Saturday, the 18th, adoption event at N. Nevada Petco, due to the impending snow. Last Saturday it took us almost 8 hours to get back to the shelter. 180 miles 0-30 mph max. Ron, our driver and shelter manager, can't go through that again. Our shelter is open every day if you would like to adopt a dog and see the beautiful scenery. We will be back on January 25 at 9690 Prominent Point Petco, from 10 AM to 3:30 PM. Please see photos of the puppies in a previous post. New dog River will be available. He is a mellow sweetheart about 4 years old.

Cordelia, as we named her, was found by a kind rescuer in an abandoned house in a rural area. He fed her and after several days realized what a sweetheart she is and brought her to the shelter. Michael and Andi gave her an awesome home. We look forward to photos from them. She loves to flop down in front of you for belly scratches. She will not be alone for more than a few hours a day. Fenced in yard. Lots of walks. The last photo is in her new home. She is right at home!
