Holiday pet safety tip 4: Decrease your petโ€™s stress

The holiday hustle and bustle can be stressful for pets, especially if they are anxiety-prone. Help keep your pet stress-free by following these tips:

Create a pet-safe zone where your pet can escape the visitors and noise.
Confine your pet to a quiet room in the house, with white noise to mask the holiday ruckus.

Talk to your veterinarian about supplements or medications that may help reduce anxiety-related issues.

These holiday pet safety tips should help you and your four-legged friend enjoy a fun and safe holiday season. But, if your pet encounters a holiday hazard, donโ€™t hesitate to contact your AAHA-accredited veterinarian.

Holiday pet safety tip 3: Be cautious with holiday plants

Many common holiday plants are harmful to pets.
For example, poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly can cause mild to severe stomach upset.

Lilies are particularly dangerous for cats, and can cause kidney failure, while amaryllis can cause vomiting, drooling, and lethargy.

If you bring plants inside your home, ensure theyโ€™re out of your petโ€™s reach.

Also, consider choosing pet-safe alternatives, such as Christmas cactus, African violet, and Phalaenopsis orchid. Always monitor your pet for poisoning signs, and contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet ingested a toxic plant.

Holiday pet safety tip 2: Decorate with care

Pets are curious creatures, and they likely wonโ€™t be able to resist investigating the new holiday decor. Sparkling lights and twinkling tinsel are simply too tempting for our four-legged family members. When decking your halls, here are some considerations:

Keep the Christmas tree water covered โ€” Water used to hydrate the tree can be contaminated with harmful bacteria, fertilizers, and more. Keep the water covered to ensure your furry friend canโ€™t take a drink.

Stabilize the Christmas tree โ€” Place the Christmas tree in a sturdy stand and secure the top to the ceiling or a nearby wall so your pet canโ€™t knock it over.
Hang decorations high โ€” Hang breakable decorations higher up on the tree where your pet canโ€™t reach.

Forego the tinsel โ€” Pets, especially cats, are often drawn to shiny and bright tinsel. However, if they swallow a piece, they may require surgery to remove a gastrointestinal obstruction.

Be careful with candles โ€” A misplaced tail swipe or curious paw can cause a burn or a fire. Ensure candles are out of your petโ€™s reach or opt for safe, flameless candles.

Cover cords โ€” Some pets like to chew on electrical cords, which can result in shock or a burn. When stringing lights and other electrical decorations, ensure all cords are well concealed.

Holiday pet safety tip 1: Beware of dangerous foods

No holiday gathering is complete without a festive feast, but common menu items can be harmful or toxic to pets. Fatty foods can cause stomach upset and potentially trigger a dangerous condition called pancreatitis. Many foods, such as chocolate, grapes, onions, and xylitol, are toxic to pets and can lead to serious health complications.

In addition, foreign body ingestion is a potential risk should your pet find a turkey bone or chew plastic wrap from the leftovers. Suggestions to keep your four-legged friend safe from harmful holiday foods include:

Restricting kitchen access โ€” Use baby gates or confine your pet to their crate during food preparation and while everyone is eating.

Warning your guests โ€” Politely ask your guests not to share their food with your pet, no matter how much they beg.

Securing the trash โ€” Place all trash in a sealed container to help prevent dumpster diving.

Picking up discards โ€” Remove all discarded plates and cups before your pet can sample a taste.

Storing leftovers โ€” Store leftovers in a closed cupboard or the refrigerator to prevent counter-surfing.

Key ingredients to avoid for your petโ€™s safety

Many holiday foods contain ingredients that are harmful and, in some cases, toxic to pets. Knowing which ingredients are dangerous for pets means you can safely and more easily enjoy the season with them. These holiday foods and ingredients should be avoided when making pet-safe holiday treats:

Chocolate โ€” Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are stimulants that pets canโ€™t metabolize well. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous for your pet.

Alcohol โ€” Small amounts of alcohol can cause pets serious health issues, such as tremors, vomiting, and seizures.

Xylitol โ€” Found in some candies and baked goods, this sugar substitute can cause a severe drop in blood sugar and liver damage in dogs.

Onions and garlic โ€” These ingredients can cause gastrointestinal distress in pets that can lead to red blood cell damage.

Raisins and grapes โ€” These seemingly healthy treats can cause kidney failure in dogs.

Macadamia nuts โ€” Macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs, causing weakness, vomiting, and other severe reactions.

Festive pet clothing
Holiday themed clothing is a fun way to have your pet join in the holiday fun for photos or other events. Make sure you work with your pet on wearing the clothing so that it doesn't cause them stress.

Dogs โ€” Look for holiday-themed sweaters, bandanas, and pajamas, but ensure the clothes are comfortable, fit properly, and allow your pup to move freely. Also, ensure they have no items, such as buttons, that could become an obstruction if swallowed.

Cats โ€” Many cats prefer smaller, lightweight items, such as a holiday collar or bow tie.

Small pets โ€” Hamsters, rabbits, and guinea pigs may enjoy a holiday bow or hat, but be careful with small pets, who can be more sensitive to wearing clothes and accessories.

Tip: Supervise your pet when they wear anything new to ensure they are comfortable and safe.

Pet-safe treats
During the holidays, many people want to share with their furry friends, but human food isnโ€™t always safe for pets. Instead, when shopping look for pet safe treats and gifts.

Dog treats โ€” Look for holiday-shaped dog treats, such as bone-shaped treats with pet-safe icing or treats flavored with pumpkin or peanut butter.

Cat treats โ€” Many pet stores sell treats in holiday flavors, such as turkey or salmon, that cats love.

Small pet treats โ€” Hamsters, rabbits, and guinea pigs enjoy treats made from natural ingredients, such as hay, carrots, and apples. Look for holiday-themed small pet treats in festive shapes and colors.

Tip: Always check the ingredients of store-bought treats to ensure they donโ€™t contain added sugars, chocolate, or xylitol (i.e., a sugar substitute that is toxic to pets).

The holidays while filled with fun and excitement can cause some stress to our beloved pets. We will begin a series of posts sharing tips to help minimize the stress they may feel.

When it comes to hosting large gatherings over the holidays this can cause anxiety in some pets. So, the best way to reduce this is to plan ahead and prepare a safe place your pet can retreat to.

- A quiet space that they can retreat to upon feeling overwhelmed:
1. A low traffic room or closet filled with their essentials including water, bedding and toys that they enjoy. This includes their crate covered in blankets in a low traffic area.

2. Calming music in that low traffic area is a helpful method to reduce the noise and chatter in other areas of the house.

3. Baby gates are a wonderful way to block off rooms and keep your pets safely in one area.

4. Pet Pheromones and distractions such as a food puzzle are additional tools that can provide your pet comfort and fun during holiday parties.
