Luckily the six newborn kittens who needed fostering were placed quickly at another foster home who will take great care of them! However, I got a call that just at closing time, five 3 week old kittens were dropped off after their mother was sadly hit by a car.
It is extremely unfortunate how often this happens to stray cats and their litters. That is why it is imperative that Catch and Release programs are funded to sterilize all stray cats and prevent the spread of unnecessary litters. All animals I foster WILL be sterilized before adoption, no exceptions (other than health limitations in senior pets.)
Sadly, many very young kittens end up not making it because their mothers meet some sort of terrible fate in the wild and never come back for them. Kittens cannot fend for themselves at all - they need to be fed every 3 hours, they can't regulate their body temperatures so they need to be kept warm, and they cannot go to the bathroom unassisted yet.
If you ever see a group of kittens that are extremely young and alone in the wild, please first take note of where they are, and call your local shelter or 311. The momma may be back for them, but if someone knows their location, they can be checked on and rescued, and momma can be picked up and fixed once the kittens are weaned, and hopefully they'll all get adopted!
We're on our way to pick up the new babies now, pictures coming soon! These kittens will need constant attention, so apologies if my updates are infrequent for the next few weeks.
If you would like to donate anything towards the care of these five kittens, we do have a Venmo set up for such purchases, and I can provide receipts upon request. Please consider donating toward the cost of powdered kitten milk, bottles, cleaning supplies, and a warming bed to help keep them warm.
