🌟2024🌟 What a rollercoaster you have been. Through the highs and the lows, we remain grateful for the hard work of our volunteers, support from our community of cat lovers, partnership with our vet team and fellow rescuers, relationships with our adopters, and the trust of the cats and kittens that we are fortunate to help and love. Tails High has experienced a year of tremendous growth - tripling our intake and doubling our adoptions, reaching 300 happily ever afters in 2024! We are overwhelmed with gratitude.
We are extremely proud of every kitty we’ve been blessed to help this year. Our mission is clear and drives everything that we do. We believe every cat deserves an advocate and miracles can happen. This often leaves us to step in and say “yes” when other rescues have unfortunately had to say no. It’s rewarding and sometimes heartbreaking work, and yes, it’s also expensive.
In true Tails High fashion, we are ending 2024 and beginning 2025 with a special intake. ✨Aurora Borealis ✨. This amazing girl made the journey all the way from Arkansas to Virginia, arriving at her vet appointment just yesterday. While we are constantly overwhelmed with requests locally and prioritize helping cats in the DC Metropolitan area, Aurora Borealis was in a desperate situation and for her, the stars quite literally aligned, as she was pulled from the shelter by Acacia’s cousin, Ally, who was traveling home for the holidays. Rory, as we affectionately call Aurora for short, had been abandoned by her family and ended up in the shelter where she was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. There were no good options for her there and Ally and Acacia couldn’t let Rory sit in the shelter for her final days.
While Rory’s nose might be hard to look at for some, we hope you will not look away from her beautiful spirit. She is an extremely happy, affectionate, and sassy girl that will chat you up from the moment she meets you. Despite her condition, she is currently stable and doing well, so we have work to do! Rory underwent sedation for a biopsy of her nose, aspirate of her lymph node and X-rays yesterday so we can get a definitive diagnosis. She will have a CT scan on Friday so our vet team can assess if surgery is a possibility before starting radiation. Our doctor has assured us that there are paths forward for Rory, and while we don’t know what they are just yet, every one of them is better for Rory now that she is here with us.
We will keep you updated on Aurora Borealis as we embark on 2025. We read that quite fittingly, the northern lights might be visible tonight, and as we look to the sky with Rory in our lap, we will be wishing all of you the happiest of new years. Thank you. ✨
