Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), a form of “bloat,” is a life-threatening condition that happens when the stomach fills with gas and rotates on itself. This twist cuts off blood supply to vital organs, quickly becoming fatal without immediate veterinary care.

Warning signs:
- Sudden, severe abdominal swelling or distension
- Retching without producing vomit
- Excessive drooling, restlessness, pacing, or discomfort
- Lethargy, weakness or collapse

Prevention:
- Use slow-feeder bowls for dogs that eat too quickly
- Avoid heavy exercise right after meals
- Talk to your veterinarian about a preventive surgery called gastropexy, particularly for large, deep-chested breeds, which are at the greatest risk of developing the condition.

Brachycephalic dogs like pugs, bulldogs, and other flat-faced breeds, are often born with features such as long soft palates and narrowed nostrils (stenotic nares) that can make breathing a real challenge.

The good news? Corrective surgery can help! Our surgeon can widen the nostrils and shorten the soft palate to improve airflow and make breathing more comfortable. We utilize advanced surgical laser technology to make this procedure as minimally invasive as possible, helping reduce discomfort and promote a smoother recovery.

Did you know: Male cats can develop urinary blockages that prevent them from urinating. This is a life threatening condition caused by dangerous electrolyte imbalances.

Watch for: Frequent trips to the litter box, straining with little or no urine production, crying out, or excessively licking the ge***al area. If you see these signs, seek emergency care immediately, his life could depend on it.

We are touched by this kind review and thankful to hear Georgie is feeling better!

When we went back for a follow up, my girl was wagging her tail and excited to see the vet tech that supported her during her 36 hour stay at the hospital. We had two follow ups, one mostly because I was an anxious mess right after surgery and one for suture removal and every interaction was 10/10.

Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS) can strike dogs suddenly, causing severe bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and rapid dehydration. It can be a life-threatening emergency and immediate vet care is essential.

We are happy to share that Whiskey is recovering well after battling AHDS, thanks to quick action from his family and supportive care from his doctors and nursing staff here at Roadrunner Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital.

Rattlesnakes are native to New Mexico and are especially active in the mornings, evenings, and at night. Keep a close eye out when hiking and always leash your pets. If your pet is bitten, please seek veterinary care immediately as symptoms can worsen quickly. Early treatment gives the best chance for recovery.

Zeus was bitten during a walk with his family, but their quick response ensured he got the care he needed and made it back home the very next day.
