(1/2) Help us welcome our newest friends! How lucky are we to be able to spend our days with these pups and their handlers?!? 😊
The “proofing stage” is vital in all obedience and a true testament to how well your dog is able to follow simple commands amidst distractions of all levels. Here, Jax works on his sit when his favorite toy is inches in front of him. I promise you he is going crazy inside and so eager to get the ball. He is then rewarded with the toy after sitting for a short duration!
Always always always pay your dog! Whether that be treats, praise, toys or all the above. Behavior that’s rewarded is behavior that’s repeated 😀

Is door darting an issue for you?
We have a solution! ✅
Having a dog that rushes out of house and car doors can be troublesome and stressful. These habits can lead to bigger behavioral issues. They should calmly wait for your command to be released, with or without distractions!

Door darting and not respecting boundaries is a huge issue. Not only can it lead to other issues, but it can be fatal. Your dog should have a good handle and appreciation for sit/down prior to working on these issues and always use a long line leash when starting out to prevent them from taking off.
Here, you see Jax is eager to go out but knows he only can when I release him by saying, “yes”. I even add in a distraction to tempt him to break his sit which he does not! Do not add in distractions until they are ready! Take your time.
Be proactive, be positive, and always tell your dog what you want them to do instead of what you don’t want them to do. Dogs always respond better this way. Tell them to sit or lay down instead of telling them to not go outside.

Teaching your dog sit/down and having them understand the concept of a marker/release word is vital in obedience training. Teaching them in this manner eliminates the need for a “stay” command. Your dog should do what you ask for until you say otherwise such as sit and down. It’s one thing if they can do it in home but a true testament to your training is having them being able to do it in a public setting with various distractions such as scents, people, dogs, snow etc. Here you can see the distraction is the snow but Jax’s eagerness to complete a task and follow through with his training far outweighs the desire to eat snow (he was able to get a mouthful of snow after our training 😂)
“What’s it like having a German Shepherd?”
Exhibit A…..
If your fetch is more like keep away, it can become slowly frustrating to the point we don’t play fetch with our dogs anymore. Fetching something should be a time where your dog can go from zero to one hundred and let out some energy. Fetch should be fun for both parties!
We can help you achieve any obedience when it comes to simple commands or games like fetch! Follow us for more videos 😊 🐕 🇺🇸
If you can’t walk your dog with the pressure of a finger, your dog needs help and your shoulder probably does too!!
Walks should be controlled and steady even with distractions present. We can help you do that! 😀

Frisbee training is a great way to introduce skills and make training fun! Keep it short to avoid possibly injury and your dog will look forward to this game/training! 🐕 😁
It is extremely important to train through distractions! The point is to train them to listen or follow through despite their current environment. In this video, I use a toy as a distraction. Same can be done with people, other dogs etc.
If you know Jax, you know how much he LOVES his toys! This is difficult for him but he pushed through and gets rewarded in the end.
Take baby steps and you’ll get your dog where you need them to be!

Some cool off time after our training session this morning! ☀️ ☕️ 🐕
Does your sit and down command need help? Your dog should be able to sit and go to a down position on command and stay there until you say it’s ok to go. This includes through any distractions such as people, dogs, and snacks like you see in this video. In addition, they should be able to stay in the given position even if you try to pull them in a certain direction like shown in the video!
Whether your commands need help or you’re barely starting, we would love to help you! Give us a call at 231-245-7151 for a FREE evaluation and follow our page for more videos 🐕
Life of a German Shepherd handler 🐕 😆
Do you have to repeat yourself when you give your dog commands such as “down”, and “sit”?
Do you raise your voice because you think they can’t hear you?
This might come as a surprise, but….. they can definitely hear you! They’re just choosing not to and this could be for a host of reasons such as a lack of focus/engagement.
Let us help you develop that focus/engagement and help you build a bond that will last forever with your best friend 🐕
